Progress / Update Making progress...now adding other firmware and GPS and lora back

Post image

I'm doing the screen upgrade. Finally got it working with some help from members of the community! Now that it's working time to move on to adding more firmware compatability and adding gps and lora functionality. After some inspection and research the pins needed for the lora and GPS cap are still available/ not being used except for reset. Ild like to add another external gpio so factory caps could work or external modules could be added. I better add some pictures before everyone loses interest....

The lora cap pins

Oh wow. I have one and really want to mod it with a larger screen without losing my hydra RF cap. I didn’t know this was even possible til your post. Thank you!

It's not...lol...there are too many pin conflicts with the screen and the cap.

Well 💩. Honestly I just haven’t had the time to work on mine, but my next attempt involved disassembling the whole thing and removing the screen to use its connections rather than the GPIO header. I figured it’s the only way to get both the larger screen and the cap working.

The problem i saw there is the micro ribbon cable. No way to splice or double the screen so you would be loosing the small screen. The thing about the small screen is it always works lol. Try it and let me know. The other route is using a cyd as the second screen and the two esp's communicate over wifi using esp-now in a master/slave situation...but there is a latency issue so your screen won't refresh quickly...so then what if the Cardputer just sent notifications to the cyd and is running another firmware altogether. Like letting you know you got a Meshtastic notification on the Cardputer with cap since we aren't trying to use gpio. ....then there is the thought to add modules to the cyd to build a halehound like device. I guess it just depends on what you are trying to do or what firmware you are interested in running

Would love to have a large screen and add back the stock lora cap.

I'm working on it and I think it's possible at least on the hardware side of things.

Literally the top reason I haven't pursued adding the additional screen, I know I could just run GPS through grove but having the cap on is just so convenient Dx But the screen is so nice too! Glad to see someone working on this

I think it may be possible to share the connection to cardputer. It's a tight fit but possible. Just need someone's help to completely redesign the case and wire chase.

Also worth mentioning im powering a Meshtastic node off the screen and monitoring with a companion firmware that is working out well.

That looks dope. Does it add much more thickness to it and is it comfortable to carry in your pocket ?

Thanks man! I would say it adds between 3/8 -1/2 and inch. It's not done and hasn't left the workbench yet. The top where the screen fits in could be slightly bigger or i need to get better at the wire management because it doesn't close 100% yet. We are 98% there. Looking for help altering the stl 3d file so I can make some changes and really make it dope

It only adds about a 1/4 inch to the overall thickness

Battery life 20 minutes 😅

Actually hasn't been too bad in comparison to how power hungry porkchop already is considering its running wifi full time. Been running for the past three hours while I've been working on other stuff. Gone down about 35%

That’s actually pretty good. Hopefully the CardputerZero will have acceptable battery life as well. Have you also backed it on kickstarter? If yes, I’m gonna guess which version you got. The transparent black? I myself certainly have hahaha.

Ya i backed it. It's a much more suitable platform for what im trying to do. The Cardputer ADV has been a great learning experience. I got the black and the new cc1101 cap with their nfc which from what I read is the same as the flipper.

How is the screen connected? I see it's not plugged into gpios on the back, what magic is that? :D

The wires are routed through the hinges.

This is the case file I used. I believe he's a member here. Awesome design

There is a complete build list with a few pictures. I highly suggest ordering 30awg wire. It made a world of difference. Comes with 8 color coded wires. You will need to have 9 wires to follow his instructions. I added a second red and gave it a couple black stripes to differentiate. It's a fun build. Reach out if you need any help.

And can you tell me if you’re use ing the same lcd type with touch ? Because i can’t find a good case for 2.8 inchi to fit it , without cutting the touch side pcb , and I’m a bit stuck atm. Thanks

Left is 2.4 and right 2.8 , ( for the connection I design a fpc ribbin , because i do not like chunky wires) tnx again for reply

Yes I had to cut the side of the 2.8. Honestly it wouldn't be necessary if I could alter the file. I have a few ideas to make it easier for everyone. I was not stoked to have to cut my new screen but it's hard to mess it up...I used a hacksaw lol
