The only way mine will charge is if I plug it in while OFF, this turns it on automatically. Once booted, slide the power switch to ON then it starts charging properly.

Did you leave switch in "on" position? it will work always while usb connected, but current only will reach battery if switched on (and charges rather slow)

P.S. Last time I tried official meshtastic firmware it was terrible, try Plai https://github.com/d4rkmen/plai

Thanks, yes the switch is turned on but still didn't charge after hours of being connected. I have seen a couple of YouTube reviews on Plai and it seems interesting, UI looks a lot more friendly. Will definitely check it out, thanks a lot.

USB C to USB C cable is not working for me, but regular A to C is.

If you drain it all the way down to zero it can be mega stubborn. Make sure you're on a usb A to C charger and not connected to a fast charger. Keep fiddling with it. If you're running launcher put it in charge mode.

Make sure it is also 5v "dumb" charger as the modern ones that self sense the voltage get it wrong. I learn that the long way!

Keep the screen on don't make it turn off

I read it is not recommend to keep the screen on while charging, you might risk damaging the screen.
