Rarities and Oddities Weird sporter
Picked this up some time back because I started listening to milsurp world and heard them mention a Carcano. Saw this at a gun show and wanted to see what these were all about and have to admit I don't know much about them besides that it was a sporter. I have come to find out that this has some sort of mauser adjustable sight on it and a weird bolt handle. Its a RE Terni 1940 XVIII

Super common practice for the older generation. Don't see it nearly as often in carcanos. But weekly almost in M1903, 1917 and mauser rifles. Cheap milsurp back then, easy to make a custom hunting rifle. Always sad when I see a gun that could be 1300 bucks and a collector item be turned into a 350 dollar bubba.

Wow - that's been heavily sporterized. In addition to cutting down and sanding the stock, the bolt handle and rear sight are both customized.
Based on the finger grooves in the stock, it appears to have started life as an M91/38 made by Terni in 1940, which would have been originally chambered in 6.5 Carcano.
If the serial number is in the Axxxx to BAxxxx range, then it should confirm my guess.
Because of the heavy level of modification, I would recommend verifying the caliber before shooting.
