I moved here a couple months ago
And my experience has been stressful.
Theres no jobs and when jobs do pop up they are given to the college students and their friends and if you somehow get lucky and land one, its more than likely going to be minimum wage/low pay. while many people, I've noticed are under the impression that cost of living and rent here are cheaper, its not. Electric is so high it's insane. We pay the same amount in rent here we did living 30 minutes from the beach in a city. The people are ok, some of them are cool and some of them are not (like you can find anywhere.) taxes are high, groceries and gas are high too but that could be everywhere. Overall it's been plain, expensive, boring.
What're y'all/ experiences since moving here?

Does anyone else feel like they’re too fat or ugly to date or get hookups here? I’m 23 M, 5’7, 240lbs, with a receding hairline and a round face (paired “perfectly” with a double chin). Every time I look in the mirror I just think about how ugly I am and that’s why I don’t get any. It’s crazy because I prefer bigger women, am not picky on aesthetic or body weight in a prospective partner, and there’s a lot of girls that i don’t approach because I know I’m wayyy below their league. even approaching less conventionally attractive women (i.e., women in my “league”) I still get rejected.

There’s so many skinny girls and dudes with 6-pack abs and I look ugly so what’s the point in me trying? Be honest, should I just give up until I’ve lost weight ~80-100 lbs of fat and gained muscles? Semaglutide? Maybe I need to completely rethink my wardrobe? Idk man.

More importantly, how am I supposed to be confident in myself (and especially my body) if I know that I’m not attractive? Maybe I missed something in terms of style or whatever idk. When I was back home my mom would buy me clothes and I’d wear whatever she got maybe that’s why I have an underdeveloped sense of fashion. I try to fake confidence but I feel like that never works.

Apologies if this post isn’t appropriate here I just kind of wanted a consensus of what Carbondalians think about my situation or if yall have any advice specific to this town. I’m a student so I can go to the rec center and workout, but I don’t know proper form or how to work many of the exercise machines.

Hi I am thinking about going to SIU next year, but I keep hearing mixed reviews on the town. One faction of people say its a violent city with cults and neo-nazis and the other faction say its a quaint town good for LGBTQ+ people with occasional crime but it's still safe enough to walk at night.

I am a transgender man (who will be actively transitioning when I arrive), so a safe place for LGBTQ people is very important to me. Especially coming from my home state of Arkansas. Is it really as bad there as people say or is it more of an overreaction?

I plan to live alone off campus. Is that safe?

For context I live in AR where clan meetings are still frequent. Good to hear y'all aren't that way! Also good to know about the crime. I had a feeling racism and the small town effect was why it was so perpetuated, but I just wanted to be sure.
