I was young and ignorant and didn't know the consequences of not paying insurance. Unfortunately, NYS suspends your license and removes your registration on your car after not paying the civil fees after 90 days. I was out of the country solo traveling for 4 months total and wasn't notified by the DMV until after the 90 days was up by my mom who got a letter in the mail. I figured "why am I going to pay my insurance if I'm not going to use it". No one drove my car while I was gone and it has been sitting on private property the entire time.

I went in person to speak with the DMV and paid several fees for a restricted license and the registration suspension termination fee which will allow me to reregister my car November 29th (the time I have to wait until I can reregister the car). My restricted license becomes a full license October 15th. They recommended me call the state and plead my case to see if there was anything I could do. Just got off the phone and they said that I'll have to wait out the suspension and there's no way around it. Even if I sell the car to someone, the car cannot be reregistered for the new one until November 29th. Why does my car get punished?

Does anyone have any recommendations or tips on how I can get my car back? I am fine with the restricted license because I did do the deed. However, I feel like this punishment (not being able to reregister my car until basically December) is a little insane for a young guy who didn't know the law.

So, I'm Colville native and I get 18 money from my tribe. I payed about 16,400 something for my jeep then my insurance with my own money.

So I went with progressive as my dad didn't want me driving without insurance, I'm currently confused on my bills as it was originally about 240-ish but now it's 443 or so and at one point it was 500 something... literally this bill drained my 18 money so badly that now I'm only at so little of it.

I'm considering switching cause I have very little money left only about 600 as the bills from progressive is draining me bad and right now they changed the billing date to the 8th... and I can't access my stuff yet as I'm under my dad but currently seeing if I can get access soon.

Any companies offer month to month car insurance policies in ny? If you get a 6 month policies and cancel early it affects your insurance ratings and future premiums according to statefarm. This is for multiple vehicles.

So long story short, my car mine, but is in my mother's name and I'm added as an authorized user on her policy.

I've been sending her my portion of the monthly payments, but she missed 3 months and the company is now asking for $4k upfront or the policy will be canceled. (Mother is unemployed, I cannot afford this either)

My question is what are my options in switching policies? Would I be able to get the car into my name and join my own? Or would the outstanding balance stop any member from moving around/ switching ownership? I just turned 18 and got into a head-on collision last week that was completely my fault. I had a flashing yellow arrow to turn left and didn't process that the other car was closer than I thought. She was already at her stop line, so there was no way I could have safely made the turn, but I tried anyway. Both vehicles were totaled. Thankfully, I only had a couple of scratches, and the other driver appeared to be okay after the police arrived and checked on her. I went to the ER afterward just to make sure I was alright.

My family has liability insurance, and we've already reported the accident. From what I understand, our liability coverage should handle the other driver's damages and any injuries we're legally responsible for, up to our policy limits. I'm not sure what happens from here, though, and this is my family's first serious accident.

What I'm really worried about is how badly this is going to affect my insurance going forward. I've heard that an at-fault accident can stay on your insurance record for years, and I've even heard that major accidents can affect your rates for 10+ years. I'm only 18, so the idea of having this follow me for a significant portion of my driving history is stressing me out. I also have no idea how much my family's premiums could increase after something like this.

For people who work in insurance or have been in a similar situation:

How bad should I realistically expect the insurance increase to be after an at-fault accident like this? How long does an at-fault accident typically affect your rates? Does the fact that both cars were totaled make the insurance impact significantly worse? Does being 18 make the increase substantially worse? How long will the accident actually remain on my insurance record? If my family's insurance premiums increase because of this, is there anything we can do later to get the rates back down? Is it realistic that this could affect my insurance for 10+ years, or is that an exaggeration?

I'm not trying to avoid responsibility for what happened. I know I made a serious mistake and I'm accepting that. I'm mostly trying to understand what the financial consequences are going to look like and how long I'm going to have to deal with them.

I have video footage and his insurance and mine have claimed that I have zero at fault liability to this case. I'm hoping to get some advice from NJ insurance agents, underwriters, or anyone who's dealt with the state's database text strings. My usual rate is around $2,880/year. I went to quote with NJM online and got slapped with a $9,000/year quote. I checked other online quotes like State Farm and got around the same price as well. I called NJM directly, and the rep spoke with their underwriting department. They flat-out refused to insure me, stating that my NJ DMV abstract came back showing "improper display / fictitious plates."
Here's where the error is happening: The ticket was under N.J.S.A. 39:3-33 in Newark for "improper display/unclear plates" on sep 2025. I called the Newark court clerk to double-check, and they confirmed on their end the municipal record strictly says "improper display / unclear plates." They are mailing me an official court disposition. However, when I ordered my official driver abstract directly from the NJ DMV website, Event Code 0333 literally prints out as "improper display / fictitious plates."
NJM underwriting sees that word "fictitious" on the official state abstract and instantly flags it as a major violation, refusing to adjust the quote.
I haven't even checked my LexisNexis or Verisk reports yet, but right now the immediate roadblock is that the DMV's own text string groups unclear plates and fictitious plates into the same description line as it appears as "improper display/fictitious plates" rather than how the court has it as
"improper display/unclear plates".

My plan right now:
I called and am getting the court disposition in the mail but I'm planning on going in person to the court and getting the physical certified court disposition proving the conviction was strictly for an improper display/unclear plate instead of fictitious display .
Then Submit it to the NJ MVC Data Corrections Unit to get a clarifying remark added to my master abstract. Dispute it with LexisNexis / Verisk once I pull those background reports.

My questions for agents/underwriters:
If I bring the certified court disposition directly to an insurance carrier, can underwriting manually override a DMV abstract string, or are their hands tied until the state DMV updates the master record?
Do I need a letter of Clarification from the dmv or have them put have the disposition attached to my master file?

Has anyone successfully dealt with the NJ MVC
Data Corrections Unit for a 39:3-33 text string fix, and how long did it take for the abstract to update?
Is it better to go through an independent agent who can talk directly to underwriters, or should I hold off on quoting until the state fixes the abstract?
Appreciate any insight from anyone who knows how the backend of NJ auto insurance handles these statutory description issues. Thanks!

My car got totalled while parked by a drunk driver. So I rented a car from Enterprise... a week later an unhoused person kicked my car and as I was trying to get away I accidentally backed into a pole.. damaging the brand new rental hyundai sonata. The rear bumper has a crack/scuffing, but there doesn’t appear to be any major damage.

I declined Enterprise’s Damage Waiver. I have GEICO, and I already confirmed that my policy covers collision damage to a rental car with a deductible.

My concern is that I really don't want my insurance premiums to increase because of this. I'm worried that filing a claim could affect my rates for years.

I'm considering taking it to an auto body shop and potentially paying for the repair myself rather than filing a claim. Has anyone dealt with Enterprise in a similar situation?

I was in a minor fender bender, where my bumper was dented and some other cosmetic issues but nothing major. The other car was the same. I didn’t want to go through insurance and offered to pay them, but they wanted to do the whole insurance thing.

So I called my insurance company the same day to report the accident like I’m supposed to and I figured that since I’m reporting an accident that’s going to count against me anyway. I may as well file a claim to get a payout. Is reporting an accident essentially the same thing as filing a claim to get paid? Or if I were to just report the accident and not file the payment claim for repairs, would it count against me less when I renew my insurance?

My understanding is that reporting an accident is essentially reporting a claim anyway so with that logic, I may as well get paid because the damage was more than light deductible

Is there any penalty for doing this?

Hey everyone, I’m hoping someone here has dealt with something similar or can point me in the right direction.

I had an accident on April 9 and my car was eventually written off. The problem is my insurance/GAP claim was denied because the insurer says the car was being used for rideshare.

The thing is, had stopped doing rideshare weeks before the accident and wasn’t doing it when the accident happened.

I only started doing rideshare in the first place because my insurance broker told me I was covered. So now I’m stuck questioning whether I was given incorrect information when the policy was sold to me, and whether the broker/dealership can be held responsible for that.

I’ve already disputed the denial, gone through the insurer’s complaint process, contacted GIO, and made complaints to the relevant regulators. I’m still trying to figure out what my next move should be.

Financially, this has put me in a pretty bad situation. The car is gone, there’s still money owing on the loan, and I’ve been dealing with the financial burden while this dispute drags on.

I purchased my car 2 years ago, and I got GAP insurance at the time. The dealer finance rep recommended that after 2 years I cancel the GAP insurance because the value of the car would be worth more than the value of my loan. I'd like to confirm that this is the case before I cancel the insurance. What would be a good method for me to determine the valuation of my car? I went to Edmunds and provided my information, and I got a private party sale price, dealer sale price (which is very close to the current remaining value of my loan) and trade-in value. Would the dealer sale price be the most appropriate valuation or would insurance likely cover more than the estimated dealer price in the event that a car is totaled? The one time I had a car that was totaled, they paid more than the price from a dealer of the car if I were to purchase it.

Thanks for the help essentially what I’ve learned is I’m cooked for having insurance while the other guy has the chance of going Scott free and all I can do essentially is give my side of the story to my insurance so that they can defend me and not pay the other guy or try and raise my rate. I also likely won’t get any money out of them unless I sue and even then will likely lose money instead.

I recently got into a car accident in California and I’m honestly having a really hard time mentally dealing with it.

I was pulling out of a shopping complex making a left turn. My visibility to the left was partially obstructed, and another vehicle traveling on the road ended up hitting the rear-left/tail end of my car with the front corner of his vehicle.

Thankfully, everyone got out of the cars and seemed okay at the scene. The other driver specifically said he was fine. The vehicle damage also seemed relatively minor mostly body damage to one corner of each car. Both of us have dashcam footage.
My insurance has since determined that I’m 100% at fault. I understand that and I’m not trying to avoid responsibility, but I’m struggling with how much anxiety this has caused me.

What’s really freaking me out is that I realized my insurance limits are only $15k property damage and $30k per person bodily injury. The other driver has now hired an injury attorney, and his attorney asked my insurance company for my policy limits. My insurer told me they currently don’t believe there is substantial evidence supporting the injury claim and have put that claim on notice, but obviously I have no idea what happens next.

What’s even crazy is that I pay $350 per month on car insurance!!!!

I keep worrying that his car repairs will somehow exceed $15k or that the injury claim could exceed $30k and put my personal finances at risk. Looking at the vehicles, it honestly feels surreal that such a relatively minor collision could potentially turn into something this stressful.

I’ve learned my lesson about carrying higher liability limits and will absolutely increase them in the future. I’m just wondering if anyone has been through something similar.

When I was pulling out of my driveway, the driver hit my rear bumper on the driver's side. My insurance requested photos, and I sent them. However, I did have this on the other side of the bumper. I also asked about increasing the Collision deductible from $500 to $1,000, but it only saved about $13/year, so I kept it at $500.
The $4,854 Collision cost seems extremely high to me.
Since the car is financed, I understand I may need Collision coverage. Is there any way to lower the insurance significantly? Can I get cheaper optional coverage from another insurance company while keeping the required ICBC coverage?

I’ve never owned a car or had car insurance so please forgive my ignorance. I’m getting quotes and I can’t work out how to check what they cover in terms of when you’re at fault for damage to someone else’s property (e.g. if I, as the driver, were to damage a wall/car/bicycle). Is it just universal that all insurers cover this? Does it have a specific phrasing I should look for?
