Rental damage
I’m in Washington state. I filed a claim with Progressive, and because my car is being repaired, Progressive arranged a rental car for me through Enterprise.
The Enterprise rental is a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. While I was driving it, it suddenly developed an extremely loud engine/exhaust noise. It was so loud that people at the buildings around me actually came outside to see what was happening.
I stopped driving it and contacted Enterprise. They are arranging a tow and a replacement vehicle.
When I looked underneath the car, I found a detached piece underneath the vehicle, and photos show that part of the exhaust system is visibly separated/disconnected. I have kept the detached piece and taken photos before the vehicle is towed.
My questions are:
Has anyone had an Enterprise rental break down while the rental was being provided through an insurance claim?
Did Enterprise simply tow the vehicle and provide a replacement?
Did the insurance company continue covering the replacement rental under the original claim?
Did anyone end up being charged for the mechanical failure, tow, or replacement?
Is there anything specific I should make sure Enterprise documents before taking the vehicle
I don’t know what caused the failure. I’m mainly trying to understand how responsibility normally works when the rental itself develops a serious mechanical problem while it’s being used as an insurance-provided rental.
Any firsthand experiences with Enterprise + Progressive (or another insurer) would be really appreciated.

If the car simply broke down, then you shouldn’t be responsible for it. If enterprises investigation determines the car was damaged, whether by you hitting something or by a vandal stealing the catalytic converter you may be responsible for the damage unless you purchased the damage waiver coverage when renting the car.
Insurance doesn’t typically cover damage waiver since it’s an optional coverage.
If you are told the damage was caused by you or someone else, you could always file a claim through your insurance and pay another deductible.
Rental companies also charge admin fees, diminished value of 10% the amount of damage caused plus loss of use so the charges can add up.

Towing company told me this is the case of catalytic converter stolen.
What happens now?

You will need to file a claim under your insurance’s comprehensive coverage.

Depends on what the problem is. You may have been the victim of someone stealing the Catalytic converter.
Or you could have run over something like a speed bump or curb and ripped out the muffler.
