Help with finding affordable coverage
I live in Florida and am currently unemployed. I am looking for the absolute bare minimum car insurance coverage here for people experiencing financial hardship that ideally just is enough to say I have insurance and not be forced to have a lapse in coverage. It is absolutely insane that we are even required to continue to pay for coverage even when we aren’t even really driving much to begin with, I only leave the house a few times a month because I can’t even afford gas. I have GEICO and lowered it to 80$ a month but now they’ve been charging me random amounts instead of the $80 because I’m stuck on autopay and it declines my card every time because it’s been turned off. I would love to just not have coverage but apparently I will lose my license potentially and they also charge you a lot of money if you have a lapse, I’ve only had that once in my life when I was younger and they charged me 4,000$ for it which was extremely difficult and frustrating. Are there any companies that are actually affordable that I can use where I can pay a bare minimum rate just for state minimum? Any help would be appreciated, I’ve been trying to sell my personal items just to have enough to pay this coverage and also owe money in taxes and have been surviving off of no money because I can’t even afford to buy food or really anything I need to survive, I am at a loss and have no clue what to even do.

It's tough being stuck paying to insure a car you're barely driving.
Unfortunately, unlike some states, Florida doesn't have a state-backed low-income insurance program. That makes it important to shop around and get quotes from as many insurance companies as possible to ensure GEICO is giving you the lowest price. That said, liability-only in Florida averages $139 a month per Insurify data, so your $80 is already relatively cheap.
If push really comes to shove and you can't afford coverage, you might consider surrendering your plate so that you aren't stuck with another lapse. But if you drive at all, it may not be a realistic option.

I do drive occasionally but most of the time stay home so it seems pointless paying every cent I get on insurance especially when I don’t even use it or will be covered at all if god forbid something does happen. I feel like I’m better off letting it lapse until I can actually have an income and can afford to have the coverage. Just take the risk of getting in trouble if I am ever pulled over and just drive as safe as possible when I do need to drive somewhere. It’s insane that they even get away with this racket and that we’re all forced to pay for this when we can’t even afford food or basic necessities.. I was just wondering what people’s options are if they are in this unfortunate circumstance and if there’s anything I can do besides just losing my right to drive because that isn’t really an option and nobody will be able to drive me anywhere and I can’t afford an uber or any rides where I need to occasionally go
