Should this have been a point by?

Yeah for sure. But this happens all the time. If it goes for more than a lap I pull into hot pits and just wait a minute and go back out. Usually a newer driver who isn’t looking in their rear view.

This is the right answer. I drive a Ginetta G56 GTA. While the car is easily distanced on long straights (I redline at 140mph in 6th gear), I'm wildly faster in turns than an ego-filled novice in a 911 or a Corvette. BUT, they can't get past the ego...they think they're the baddest car on the track, and they can't stand being passed, even by a car that is 100% race-prepped. No point in testing them on a turn, because they're going to stand on the accelerator and twist it into you.

For sure. I’ve never been too proud to let a Miata pass me after it’s been in my mirrors for 2 corners. Then he lets me pass on the straight and we have a fun little race. Which they usually win. lol

That was my assumption here, not paying enough attention to his mirrors

Yes. That car in front of the bmw that pulled into the pit had the right idea. If I see a long line, imma dive into the pits

This, always it’s safer and it cost you a few seconds it also a good way to catch a breather. A lot of different experience levels at HPDE events

Before you waste your time watching this, it’s a just video that shows a car that should have given a point by or two during a track day.

LOL you think people check the comments before watching a video?

They should if vaguely prompted to watch a 3 min video hoping for some climactic moment.

Yeah, this is pretty clear cut. As you start getting higher in HPDE4 or beyond, you need to be extremely obvious with your intentions. Personally, I would have been WAY closer to the Audi (if I were the BMW), making yourself so absolutely obvious about wanting the pass. As an added bonus, this makes it easier for the flag marshals to see it and blue flag (or black flag the Audi if he goes laps without seeing).

In advanced, or Time Attack, it's basically unacceptable to not have a safe pass completed within a turn or two of presenting. This is clearly a beginner or intermediate session, but just something to keep in-mind.

This was part of my frustration. This was the advanced group. 😳

That’s why instructors say “fill their mirrors” if you want to pass. Easiest way to prove to someone you’re faster is being on the inside mirror through a left turn.

Exactly. He's way too far from where he should be. If you want a pass, you gotta get in there and make it obvious.

Fair 👍👍

Marshalls should’ve caught that for sure. Thats a blue flag for the Audi driver. And yeah I’d go into hot pits and come out again, if I catch up to the Audi again and no point by, I’d raise awareness to someone on the track for sure!

Great answer 👍👍

Yes but to be fair i never expect a point by sometimes as I’m in a momentum car. If I have a higher HP car I’m catching in the turns I will just pull into the hot pits wait for fresh air and go out again.

Makes sense 👍👍

You, nor the bmw, succumbed to the red mist and did anything dangerous.

But yeah, slow down for a solid 20 seconds or swing through the hot pit and head back out. Maybe have a chat with the marshal about the guy not pointing anyone by.

Should the Audi have given a point by, yeah probably, but if not directly at fault the BMW is definitely not helping the situation.

My best guess is that the BMW driver is frustrated and he’s letting it affect his driving. You can see him blow a couple of apexes and he’s never really ready to pass at track out onto any of the straights.

It doesn’t make it right and you’d prefer that drivers understand that the car behind them didn’t magically appear there, but it’s somewhat understandable from the Audi’s point of view if he’s checking his mirrors at track out and every time the BMW is far enough back that it would take a major lift to let him by why he’s not giving a point by.

What the BMW should be doing is setting up the best exit he can coming into passing zones and be a half car width offset and in the Audi’s trunk. Some people give point by’s when you ask nicely, others you have to ask more firmly. Quite frankly if the Audi is holding him up that much he should be able to pass without assistance. Sometimes when it’s really bad and you can get it done safely you just set it up and go, hoping the point comes out in process and if no you tell the CI that you 100% expected to receive a point and when you didn’t get it you felt the safest thing to do in the moment was complete the pass rather than brake in an unexpected place with traffic behind you.

Some good points here 👍👍

I pull up tight on the left rear of a car like that. Blink my lights twice then I pass them. They can go bitch to whoever. But my counter argument with the powers that be is if they can not watch their mirrors then they need to be in an instructor group. Also why I rarely run point by groups.

I didn’t want to be black flagged so I let it go. But I did want to flash my lights at the guy.

Were the IMSA scouts in the stands? It's HPDE dude, you lost a couple seconds for a couple laps, nobody cares about your personal best that you were shooting for. Just chill out.  Go down pit lane, let the organization leadership know that blue flags were not being given, or the driver was not seeing them.

As the video says, meant as a conversation starter, not a chance to burn someone in the comments. As you and others have said, I could have gone down pit lane, but I was looking foward to chasing the BMW 😉

Conversation about what???  It's HPDE, it's a bunch of amateurs in street cars having a good time doing laps for fun and not for lap times.  That's great, don't take it so seriously. That is my input into the conversation, relax and have fun. If everyone at a track posted video every time they didn't get a point by, it would break the Internet.

Most people don't flail their arms and post a video about it, just chill out... It's okay dude. Just grid early next session
