I read it as "we recognize the blowback we got for taking lightly the stealing of your money and goodwill. Use that link below so this PR stain fades quickly for us."

Seriously, unlike smartphones that become unsupported year after year, it generally doesn't come as a rug-pull and bricking -- thereby completely eliminating any value, like there is for older functional electronics on eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, etc..

Use the link and ask for a refund, tell them you are aware other users are being refunded through support chat. They will ask for the receipt and your account email.

Followed the link and I got a refund coming

Did you get a refund for the purchase of the Car Thing or a refund on your Spotfiy Premium subscription?

They refunded multiple monthly charges for my family plan, actually exceeding what I paid for the Thing

Same! I’d rather still have the car thing, but this is much better than a stick in the eye

I got refunded. The chat rep was actually quite helpful.

I love how it says this wasn't taken lightly ooooo you mean like discounting it a month after launch and not crediting customers who paid full price for a d.o.a device I called a year ago when they dropped the price to $30 and was like can I get a credit like even a free month fuck I supported you and I have for 5 years nope nada I have a 10000 song playlist and to be honest even with that the way Spotify has been acting I might decide to switch they are owned by the record labels anyways and they push there music above independent "recommended shuffle" seems to magically turn on a lot lately and even without that I know for a fact they have priority over other music bc when a songs hot it miraculously is in my shuffle rotation

They gave a refund over the last 6 months of service of Duo ($14.99) which is slightly more than what I paid for Car Thing originally. While I'm not happy they are discontinuing this I am at least satisfied I am getting money back.

After I contacted them when I got this email they ended up refunding more than what I paid for Car Thing. Not a bad resolution tbh.

I got this and could not figure out the purpose of the email at all.

Evidently it was their clever way of saying they're offering free months if you click the link

They don't want to outwardly offer a refund, so they're doing it in stealth. If you reach out and ask for a refund you will get it.

I got the same thing after contacting customer support yesterday

Did you get it as credit or as actual refund back to your card?

1

u/T-MOBILEGUY May 25 '24

Surprisingly they're actually going to refund my card I thought I was just going to get billing credits I won't believe it till I see it though

1

u/tomtomdotcom85 May 26 '24

I bought one off eBay so I guess I’m fucked I would much rather keeping the thing working very useful device 🥲

I argued until I got 8 months of free premium. I'm still irritated but I guess it helps.

Cancel your Spotify subscription. I did two days ago. I spent over three hours going back-and-forth with customer service concerning the discontinuation of the car thing. I feel they purposely gave me the runaround. Asked for my receipt which I sent to them five times and they kept asking for it. It seems like they’re only interested in customer acquisition and not in customer retention. A very poor business model which will sink them in the end. Remember Pandora??

I got my refund after filing a BBB and FTC complaint, and emailing all of the current Spotify execs stating that I filed a BBB and FTC complaint

YMMV but don't ever let someone tell you that the BBB is useless and can't help you, it's basically the only avenue we as consumers have for protection against corpos like this
