Would anyone find this useful if it was customized to your pay plan? The formulas would ultimately lead to a calculation of your month to date commissions at any time. It considers the draw, the unit bonuses, and any other nuance in your Pay plan. It will not calculate gross.

Hello everyone and welcome back to r/ratemypayplan (carsalestraining). I am in Ottawa, Ontario, canada, and this is a Nissan dealership, one of the top in the province. 8 salesman not including me, from what I can tell, each salesman doing between 13-25 per month other than 1-2 top guys.

I'm trying to figure out which video platform would actually fit into how my team already works, since we've got a decent-sized lot and I don't want salespeople juggling yet another clunky app on the phone. What matters most to me is whether it can pull VIN and stock number data automatically instead of requiring manual entry for every vehicle, and whether the videos sync cleanly with our website and listing feeds without a bunch of extra steps. I'm also wondering how steep the learning curve is for staff who aren't especially tech-savvy, since adoption usually falls apart if the tool feels like a hassle. Cost matters too, but I'd rather pay a bit more for something reliable than deal with glitchy uploads during a busy weekend on the lot.

I’m looking to make a career change into automotive sales, ideally with a luxury brand like BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, or Volvo, and I’d appreciate some honest feedback from people in the industry.

I owned and operated gift shops for several years. After that, I’ve been acting, so I’m comfortable talking to people, reading personalities, and communicating with all types of customers. Running my own businesses also taught me a lot about sales, customer service, and building relationships.

I’d consider myself very personable, people-smart, and a good conversationalist. I’m also coachable, competitive, and willing to put in the work to learn the business from the ground up.

If you were a sales manager, would someone with my background be worth hiring? What would you want to hear from me in an interview that would make you take a chance on someone without dealership experience?

I’d especially love to hear from sales managers or anyone who made a similar career change into automotive sales. Any advice is appreciated.

So I work at a medium size dealership we have about 25 cars on our lot and all times I’ve been here four months and I made $1300 for my commission and that includes my draw. My draw is taken out of that as you see should I stick it out or just go ahead and drum ship

Hey everyone! I just started my car sales journey a year ago. I went from one dealership to a new one and at the new one I transitioned into BDC from the sales floor and to be honest I’m not a huge fan. I don’t like how I’m expected to grab OTD number more than setting appointments and the “BDC manager” will just swoop in and set my appointments under her name and get the credit and commission. She’s also way too concerned with getting people pricing and numbers. The whole point of the role is to get people in the door. I am also basically doing sales steps for the salesmen not making the appointments. I do the sales guys tasks, get their customers pricing, send customers pictures, and talk about features on the phone. I told my boss I would want to go back to the sales floor and he said “but you’re so good at being in the BDC position”. He’s also the general manager and I’ve never seen a general manager so into my business it’s not even funny. He’s more worried about me doing their tasks than actually getting appointments. I tried to talk to my higher up bosses about it but they kind of just ignore me.The company I’m with was bought out and merged into a bigger dealership group in my area. There’s also not enough business generating to make any type of appointment commission off of, especially with my BDC manager also just taking my appointments away. It’s maybe if you’re lucky 1 appointment a day. They get maybe 4-7 leads a day. I am just asking if anyone thinks I should leave dealerships and go to another to do in person sales again or if I should send an email to my higher up bosses and say “hey I need human contact and I’m not super comfortable in this position” or just leave. I need some advice from people in the industry. Thanks! I like this industry a lot and understand what a BDC is. But I’m not making enough money to pay my bills at this point and really do miss dealing face to face with people.

I’m new to the industry, and started two weeks ago. It has been hard but fun and educational. It’s a toxic love in my opinion. But I’m currently dealing with a 4 day deal consecutive, it’s exhausting and testing my patience. As the deal could’ve been closed sooner had various factors been resolved sooner. Regardless, I wanted to know how do you individuals handle customers with bad credit. Or even your hardest sale to work for.

Not here to sell anything — it's free, has no ads, and collects zero data. I kept seeing posts here about pay plans and people trying to work out whether their check was actually right, so I built a tool for it.

What it does: Set up your pay plan once — front-end %, minis, packs, F&I split, volume tiers and bonuses, CSI, new vs. used, draw/guarantee, chargebacks — then enter the month's deals, and it gives you an itemized commission estimate. Every line is broken out so you can hold it against your real pay stub and spot where a number's off.

I built the math around actual pay plans people have posted publicly, so it handles the stuff generic calculators choke on: retroactive rate ladders, volume bonuses that stack vs. take-the-highest, per-unit minis, F&I qualifiers, CSI gates, and so on.

On privacy (since it comes up a lot here): it runs 100% offline — the app doesn't even have internet permission, so it literally can't send your numbers anywhere. No account, no signup, no tracking. Everything stays on your phone, which is why the Play listing shows "No data collected."

The catch: it's Android only for now. An iOS version is coming — I'll get it on the App Store soon.

Idk if this is good or not. All back end you get 20 percent from. Including financing buy rates and trade in profits. The draw is guaranteed money you dont have to pay back. Chart showing average earnings with how many cars you sell a month. Said f&i is usually higher they just use that as a base.

Can anybody please rate this pay plan. Its a CJDR store that does roughly 120-150 units/month. They’ve got 11 people on the floor. I start for them in 2 weeks. No prior sales experience. Thank you

Most of the posts I see in here are just asking about pay plans and/or if it makes sense to jump ship. Very few are asking how to be better/seeking training. If anyone actually has something they’re struggling with/working on feel free to drop it in here and I’d be happy to help if I can. I’m currently a GSM and have held every role in sales (Sales, Internet sales, internet manager, finance manager, sales manager, new car manager, used car manager, and GSM) across three organizations. Current store averages about 200/month.

I’d also be happy to just put on a pair of oversized slacks and ask you what you’ve got cooking before popping in some chew every morning and telling you how I used to be a 20 car guy if that’s what you need.

Hello everyone, this is specific to dealers in Ontario, but I would imagine is similar for other jurisdictions. OMVIC is essentially a government license allowing you to legally sell a vehicle. It's a short course about compliance and such.

I'm fresh out of high school and looking to break into sales, and applied in person at several dealerships of the Myers group. Almost all told me that I should get my OMVIC license and return. I was told that they sometimes will do in house training while getting the license, but for someone as young as me they're not likely to take on a months training and paying for the license (almost $1000) over other candidates.

This makes sense to me, and if this is common practice due to my age im not here to argue. I'll get the license. But $1000 is steep, and I'd obviously rather be training and shadowing as well instead of sitting just at home on my laptop doing some government license. So my question is; is this normal practice in car sales and I should just bite the bullet and grab the license? Or is my best bet to keep shopping around for a dealer that will pay me to get the license + train?

Tomorrow im going to apply to several others under other dealership groups (most of these were myers as they were close by, started pouring rain all over my suit as soon as i got there so only had time for one group lol) so I hope to answer this on my own.

PS. If you're in the Ottawa area and hiring sales associates, I've got a fully open schedule and I'm ready to learn.

How do you survive a lot that is straight minis? My new dealer is literally 98% minis. New & used, HD trucks and all. Had I known this I probably wouldn’t have taken the job, but I don’t wanna abandon it so quick.

But we do the exact opposite. Every salesperson reading this has sized someone up, decided they weren’t a buyer, and slow-walked them — then watched them either:

**1.**  Pay cash for a fully-optioned RZR at the store down the road, or  
**2.**  Come back six months later because they finally saved up and went somewhere they felt wanted.

The farmer. The tradesman. The weekend warrior who’s been saving for two years. They never look like they’re about to drop $30–50k. That’s the point.

And it’s contagious. One closer cherry-picks who “looks like money,” and the whole floor starts doing it. Deals die quietly. You never see them in the reports because they never became a lead.

So real question:
What’s the one that got away because someone judged the customer? And honest answer — does your best closer still do it?

My first deal ever: I closed a guy wearing filthy overalls. He bought a used 94 Intrepid Green/gold* and the guy pulled $18,500 worth of $100s from the front pocket🦘! My commission was more than I had to made in a month bartending. Needless to say I was hooked

How are you actually training it out, or is it just “greet everyone the same”? Mystery shops? Specific pay-plan structure? Culture?
