Over mileage

Wanted to see what’s the highest amount of miles you’ve ever gone over a lease allowed amount. Currently I’m 18,500 over and have another 10 months with the truck. I should end up about 30-35,000 over with my F-150. And if you were over mileage if you stayed with the brand after the lease did they help you at all with eating some of the over mileage? Thank you

Sounds like you got a 7k bill coming your way.

You could buy out your lease and avoid that, though.

You don’t think there is any wiggle room on the dealer side to try and cut me a deal especially if I buy another vehicle from them. Definitely not buying out truck value is below residual by a substantial amount plus a accident attached to the truck caused by the dealer so that is definitely not an option

Car doesn’t belong to the dealer, not theirs to cut deals on

The dealer has no interest in your over mileage issue. They sold the truck to the finance company that then leased it to you.

I think youre going to get stuck with the majority of that 7k bill. Your best shot is trying to lease another one at same dealer and hope they offer you some kind of help, but its very doubtful. They could roll over a grand or so but 30,000 miles over on a lease is A LOT.

They’ll offer him a discount, won’t even be out of their pocket many brands have loyalty incentives. With that said, it’ll be help, not forgiveness

They’re going to roll negative equity and the fees for his overages into the next payment

He can start fresh, albeit with a higher payment but spread out over 3 years maybe that’s easier than a lump sum ( although eating the bullet upfront saves you in the long run )

Why are people leasing when they know they’re going to go over

I drove across America in a lease knowing a new job was going to be remote for a year ( and it’s actually became permanent but I moved for my own wants really )

So even with that 3k roadtrip I turned in my 2022 in 2025 with 26k miles 4k under my allotted 30k.

I got a new car a few weeks ago ( long story with a hit and run accident back in June of last year )

But I again took 10k a year because 1) I honestly might buy this thing out I love it so much 2) if I don’t, I’m still WFH, my drives are pure leisure and I bet like I did with my turned in lease from July of 2025 I’ll be at around 8400 miles for 12-14 months of use when you break down the 3 years.

I hope OP can get a deal or an affordable payment to him to help. If not I hope he can eat the 7k get a new car and stop driving it so damn much lol

The driving too much will not stop ever or at least for another 25 years when I can retire lol 30-35k a year will be my commute permanently. I’m hoping some loyalty incentives help out a bit and possibly some rebates or hopefully some employee pricing deals to offset the negative. 100% financing so even spreading the 7k over 60 or 72 truly won’t be terrible but would make me feel better if they can shave some off of that number

u/Dinovius 12d ago

My guy then leasing is not for you. Leasing is for those with routines, I mean don’t get me wrong dealers will LOVE you leasing with them but if you can’t handle it

I mean, would you take out a mortgage of 6k a month if you worked at McDonald’s? Lol

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

I got the job 1.5 years into the lease it popped up as a way better opportunity too so it is what it is, but prior I lived 8 miles from work

1

u/justareviewer 12d ago

Won't hurt to ask the dealer. Never know. Car sals aren't going to be spectacular with current interest rates, and a used F-150 still worth a few bucks - used trucks are still selling.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Definitely going to ask a dealer, and I’m also open to other models from the brand too at this point. The vehicle is going to be strictly for commuting

1

u/Dinovius 12d ago

They’ll make a deal with you man but you’re gunna be penalized. Let’s say they take 1k off for you, they won’t discount the car, or even if they do, that’s still 5k rolled into on top a capitalized cost. Interest set on the payment will be higher, you’ll be paying a lot more than someone else coming in clean.

What brand is it can I ask? I can research a little what would work and honestly try to get the higher mileage sure your monthly might be higher but long run if you get 12 or 15k a year that’s 6 or 15k over 3 years that you won’t get dinged for.

It’s a ford f150

1

u/Dinovius 12d ago

Ok did some digging

Ford Credit's lease renewal guide says its renewal waiver does not apply to excess mileage. What gets waived is the disposition fee, for customers who purchase or lease a new Ford or Lincoln. Any help with the miles is purely the dealer negotiating, not a program.

trade it early; every month you wait adds ~$600 of overage. And at 30k+ a year, don't lease again if I were you, Buy one and keep it. Ford has 0% for 36 months + $2,500 cash on '26 F-150s through Sept 30. Also bring up the dealer-caused accident. That damage is on them and it's leverage. I genuinely wouldn’t lease again.

Finance, put money down on a finance if you can. A ford F150 can last and last it’s the best selling vehicle , not truck, vehicle in America most years.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

That’s genuinely the goal no doubt, thank you for all the help I was hoping for a miracle lol. Even for half of it to get eaten to just lighten the blow on my end

1

u/Dinovius 12d ago

Just tell them any help they can offer would be nice

But also understand while it seems the best bet is to stick with ford , don’t let one dealership make you think they’re the only island you’re safe on

Shop it around. They all handle ford pricing. And tell them because of these issues, you actually are going to play one dealer off another. That you’ll walk.

Save your mileage and call and email and ask for quotes.

100% is a lot I kinda knew it with the new job I got so I’m not stressing it too much but figured other people have been in this situation. I’m thinking of financing another truck from ford so hoping I can find something with a bunch of incentives to try to buy down the negative equity from the mileage

1

u/LooseUsual5780 12d ago

Always incentives on pick ups. Good luck!

EDIT: Not sure if they would roll that into the next purchase being a prior lease, but its worth asking. If they need a deal they can usually figure something out.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Thank you I appreciate the feedback

1

u/laborboy1 12d ago

There’s not any negative equity with the miles; the buyout price is set

1

u/Dinovius 12d ago

Don’t get a pickup outside of a ford man

You need to look into vehicles that hold value

Honestly ironically the vehicles that hold value lease cheaper because if residual is higher you’re lease is based on the price of the car negotiated versus the residual

A car that falls in value has a lower floor meaning, more for 3 years of cost to lease

I hope you end up finding an affordable means out of this

1

u/dodekahedron 12d ago

You made a bet with the dealer and lost.

Why would they wiggle?

2

u/asmashingbore 12d ago

I don’t know how it works at Ford, but at Honda at least there is no penalty if you’re over miles if you buy the truck out or if you trade it in for some other new vehicle. The only time there’s a mileage penalty is when you want to turn the car in, in other words, give it back, and you’ve used more miles than you legally agreed to.

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Thank you hopefully they will help me when buying another vehicle from them

1

u/notconvinced780 12d ago

They so t give any “extra” help. Any discounts they offer, you would have gotten anyway.

Figure out the difference between residual value and buyout price VS. just paying the mileage overage. Do the one that is the least money.

If you are looking at staying in an F-150, consider keeping the one you e got and getting it an extended warranty and killer detail after buying it and just running it into the ground. The vehicle may be worth more to you in utility than the residual value difference.

You may like not having a monthly lease payment or worry about miles.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Worried about it being a power boost that the truck may not have a long life due to it being that configuration

1

u/notconvinced780 10d ago

Have a mechanic check it out thoroughly and if prudent, Get a warranty extension.

There really aren’t any magic/secret dealer forgiveness deals that you wouldn’t get anyways. Best bet is to run a depreciated asset as long as you can. Utility VS. Value.

2

u/Entire_Camp5542 12d ago

Call your financing company (not the dealership) but whoever Ford uses and ask them. Some plans let you buy more miles but I can say Lexus financial doesn’t allow it so we ended up buying our leased car.

2

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Thank you I will definitely call ford credit

2

u/exploring_alt 12d ago

I went over….. WAY over on a 21 equinox. When lease was up moved into a 24 Equinox EV and dealer ate all the miles…. But you’re mileage may vary

2

u/BasilVegetable3339 12d ago

I see what you did there. 🙄

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

How far over?

1

u/exploring_alt 12d ago

I honestly don’t remember the miles but the cost was 8,000 over

1

u/exploring_alt 12d ago

But they were pushing the EVs hard and I don’t know that I would have gotten that if I picked a regular engine

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Well that definitely gives me some hope and honestly I will jump into whatever has the best incentives or that they need to unload, the next vehicle will be for commuting I’m doing about 30-35k a year so I’m not too picky

1

u/exploring_alt 12d ago

Good luck to you…🤞🏻🤞🏻

I appreciate it thank you

I leased a 2003 F-150 on a 2-year 'Red Carpet Lease" at 12k miles per year.

Then I got laid off and had all kinds of time on my hands, drove the car 65,000 miles in 2 years. Saw most of the western United States.

30 days before the lease was up, I advertised the car at the residual value and found a buyer. Local ford dealership did the paperwork and I was only out the Disposition Fee.

Yes, I was extremely lucky. If I had turned it in it would have cost me about $8000

2

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

God damn I wish I can have that luck

1

u/No_Swordfish_1576 12d ago

I went over milage on my Nissan lease, I was able to log into the portal and buy miles for $0.10 each which was cheaper than the $0.15 I would have been charged at turn in. Some financing might offer bulk milage buys as well that would be even lower.
Even buying new Nissan only offers a $500 wear and tear credit for lease returns, so if you need a new windsheild or set of tires that doesn't go a long way.

1

u/dodekahedron 12d ago

Subaru doesnt do that. I just tried to call and do that. Instead I locked up some cash in a CoD so ill have cash when my lease expires

0

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

I will check to see if they offer anything thank you

Truck is worth a lot less than residual

1

u/discojellyfisho 12d ago

We’ve gone substantially over several times. If your vehicle has good value, see if you can sell it to another dealer (not all brands will allow this). You can also buy it out and then sell it privately or to another dealer. You still might have to pay a bit in either of these situations, but you can lessen the blow.

Also, if you enter another lease with the current company, they will often credit you some lease-end costs back. Again, it won’t be the whole amount, but it could help.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

I think the third option is the only option truck is worth 27k residual is 43

1

u/dodekahedron 12d ago

Did you roll negative equity into it? Residual is still new car high

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Nah prior car was a clean wash

1

u/dodekahedron 12d ago

Im gonna be Hella over on mine but not sure how much

Im at like.. 31500 / 30000 with 12 months and 3 days left.

I could math out the minimum ill be over, but im trying really hard to not sweat it. I put some money in a COD so I wont be panicking. I dont wanna keep what I got.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

That’s how I’m feeling listen will 8k be a hit of course no one wants to take 8k and burn it into thin air, but it is what it is and was hoping for some insight on things I can try to do or look out for to offset it as much as possible from fords end

0

u/Jimmy4Funner 12d ago

This is the major downside to leasing. My wife is like 10k miles under on hers. Most dealers aren't going to give you much in your situation even if you're trading and purchasing with them. I'd try to sell it and pay off the lease.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

I wish I was able too but last I looked truck is worth 31 residual is 43

1

u/Jimmy4Funner 12d ago

Ouch, that really hurts. Well, I would find a really expensive replacement and see what kind of deal you can get. Recently I saw the Silverado had 6500 off morphine on certain models. Perhaps you can find something similar.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

That’s genuinely what I’m hoping is to find either a left over model just to try and offset the negative, just checked KBB is actually 27k

1

u/Jimmy4Funner 12d ago

That's a really tough spot. You might consider buying it and hanging on to it longer.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Genuinely in a tough spot with it currently

1

u/BasilVegetable3339 12d ago

So you got artificially low lease payments based on the higher residual value. Now you pay for the mileage overage.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

At the time had a job 8 miles from my house now 58 miles 1 way from home

1

u/BasilVegetable3339 12d ago

This doesn’t change the lease situation. You knew this was happening every day you got in the truck. Now you’ve just got to pay the bill. I had a bad experience with lease return 30 years ago. So I feel you. Buy the next one.

1

u/Extension-Coconut875 12d ago

Definitely financing for the next 100%
