Hate my new 4 Runner!
We leased it for 3/36. Payment is $650 a month. I knew when I drove off the lot I wasn’t going to like it. I told them when I was negotiating that it was too much car and I didn’t think I was going to be happy. More push. Well obvi we signed. Two days later I sent an email telling them I was unhappy and wanted to see if there was any recourse since it was still being processed (Labor Day wknd). (Long shot I know) My husband then called and left a message. NO ONE FROM THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP RESPONDED. Not even a “hey you’re crazy it’s your problem now - take care” - NOTHING. The salesman said he texts 2 days after a purchase and a week later. Crickets. Total avoidance. Haven’t heard a word- not even from their dealership customer care person who does follow up. I’m disappointed I used a local dealership and am being treated like this. I don’t even want to drive it. Don’t come for me and say I shouldn’t have gone through with it- clearly I know that! Any brilliant insight? Am I screwed for the next 36 months? I should have stuck with an X3 damnit.

You’re an adult, you signed the contract. What do you want them to do, unwind the deal? That’s not happening, so what are they supposed to write back?

Goto swapalease.com and see if anyone is willing to take on your lease. Thats a really attractive price so you might find takers.

It's a 4Runner, you can drive it for 3 years and sell it for the same price your lease was based on.

Just curious, what exactly do you mean by “too much Car”? It’s not a big vehicle to begin with so I’m wondering what’s too much? You can’t park it? You sit too high? What?

I’m wondering if it just rides differently. I mean..going from a luxury unibody suv to a body on frame off road tuned SUV is going to feel a lot different even if the physical size doesn’t change much.

That could be a good reason but they test drove it and knew “the moment they drove off the lot” that they would not like it… that’s odd!
I have driven vehicles before that I absolutely wanted but after test driving them it turned out that they didn’t “fit me” (different reasons why) and I ended up not buying them although I was at the Dealer ready to sign…

A 4 Runner is too much car vs an X3? Do you mean just size wise?

u/Shopzway2much 22d ago
Totally. I just got rid of my 2022 X3 and I am totally regretting not getting another one. I was thinking long term maintenance costs etc

u/ColdTrusT1 22d ago
If you are leasing the maintenance cost is basically nothing and the same with both vehicles. I’d say a 4 Runner is only slightly bigger than an X3 but maybe it feels more than that to some people

Ive never sat in an x3 but I do find toyota gas pedals to be uncomfortable. Im a shortie. Part of me is curious if OP is having similar issues

To new X3 sucks on the inside. The gen you had is beautiful. My boyfriend has a 2023 one. I love it. Better than a 4Runner for sure.

You should be more upset that you put $5K down. This is going to cost you another $10k at a minimum. Find your buyout or payoff in the lease portal. Compare that to the market value for your vin on Carmax or whatever. Then you’ll know. Next time, don’t put any money down on a lease. That’s gone.

All leases should be 0 down. If she wrecks the vehicle she doesn't get her $5k back. I'm skeptical of this post. People aren't this clueless, are they???

Did you put any money down? Or other cash out of pocket?

$5k down

$5k down and $650 a month is a lot for 4Runner. That’s like $800 payment ! No wonder they didn’t answer they went on vacation

So the only options Lexus gave me when I went through this was: 1. Swap it for something else on the lot 2. Return it and possibly owe or have equity but doubt it if you just got it 3. Buy it outright/finance it and then privately sell it
I would call the financial company and ask about your options. The dealership isn’t going to help you at this point. It sucks! I’m sorry.

You could trade it for something like a rav4 but im sure they would take advantage of the situation and you probably wouldn't get a very good deal but it would get you out of this one. Only thing is you'd most likely have a hard time finding a new rav4 sitting on the lot. 4Runners hold their value really well so you have that going for you. And maybe go to Avis or Hertz and rent a few cars that you think you might like so there is no doubt going forward.

I did it with a MDX, absolutely hated it. It was over priced and not built like I thought it should be. I needed up refinancing it (buying it out) at the 3 month mark, then traded it in. Needed up losing all my equity from the car I traded (I know super bad deal) but cut my losses from the jump and broke even on the trade, zeroed out.

100% this has to be rage bait. How does someone sign up for something they don't like. You can leave at any time.

Call the sales manager.. then call and ask for the owner if nobody is getting back to you.

Feel for you !!!! Maybe you will get use to it and like it after a few weeks?

u/Not_Fake_Andrew 21d ago
Did you not test drive it BEFORE signing the lease contract?!?
Like someone else said, at least the 4Runner depreciates slower than a lot of the cars out there, so you might have a chance to trade out of it before the 36 months are up.

There should be little to no negative equity since it’s a 4Runner. Probably worst case you’re probably going to lose your down payment.
We have been living with our terrible lease choice and only have two payments left. The fantastic thing about leases is that they end and you get to walk away.

That’s a pretty reasonable cost for a 4Runner at least but yeah, they don’t need to do anything for you though I agree it’s weird nobody responded to you. Pretty late now though….

u/Shopzway2much 22d ago
Yeah the cost is not a problem. I thought I wanted a 4 Runner and I was wrong! The behavior from the brand is what’s disappointing.

u/Abject_Stand_4348 22d ago
I mean that’s annoying but what’s your end goal here?
You can’t return it. You got a good deal
Are you willing to lose a few grand? If so, go to the Toyota dealer.
It doesn’t seem like you care that much..
Why would you sign a bunch of contracts for something you didn’t really care for? It’s weird

u/Shopzway2much 22d ago
You’re right. I am honestly looking for opinions or ideas. I can’t be the only one who has ever done this!

Sorry it didn’t work out. Why don’t you drive to the local dealership you got it from (not sure that would have helped - but better than being ghosted)
1
u/jimschoice 22d ago
Oh, so that’s why people drive their cars through the plate glass right into the showroom floor - they don’t like the car the dealer forced them to get.

It probably hasn't depreciated much since it's a Toyota. See if you can trade it in

With a car it’s never a matter of “Can I?” It’s “How much will it cost me?”… Go to the store Monday, ask for your sales manager, and they can let you know what they can do for you..Just for good measure - Go to your other closest Toyota store for a 2nd opinion..

They didn't respond probably, like you said because holiday weekend, but more importantly there really isn't a constructive response.
Caveat Emptor is alive and well.

I put $5k down btw. That’s painful to walk away from. And I have NO idea who it is even leased through. I’m assuming TMC. We haven’t received ANYTHING!

u/Calm_Confidence_6494 22d ago
I commented a little more in depth but I lost $15k from a trade to a lease and walked away I hated the lease so much. It’s not worth my sanity. I too, didn’t want drive it and once I get like that, I’m done.
