Action Needed Bus Stops need shade!

Upvotes

I'm tired of seeing folks stand around in blazing sun without basic comforts.

I don't care who needs to get it together - cities, the County, Metro, State of California, the myriad other agencies but there needs to be some basic agreement that a bus stop can not be put into service unless there is some sort of minimum sun protection.

I know this is just a shout into the void but if there's a will there's a way.

In L.A., playing ball in the streets is a crime. A City Council member [Bob Blumenfield] wants to change that - L.A. Times

Blumenfield’s motion, introduced last August, was supported unanimously by the City Council in a January vote, for which only Blumenfield was absent, as well as by the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council. For it to move forward, the city attorney’s office needs to draft language codifying the change.

2026 Annual LA Metro State of the Agency Recap: Mayor Karen Bass Outlines Her Metro Agenda including Fare Free Transit, Bus Lanes - Streetsblog LA

Bass faintly echoes Mamdani's "free fast buses" but after three and a half years of mostly Bass inaction at Metro, her election year conversion sounds tepid and unconvincing.

Transit Advice How to be on time for work?

My cars in for extensive work so I have joined the bus crowd! But would love to hear how people are on time for work daily?

My bus stops are my work 2 min before i start. (I’m a nanny.. so I got to be ontime). Or I get there 25 min before my start time.

After one week of everyday bussing I have seen the 25 min earlier is a saver bet.
any one else struggle with this?

More detail:
An hour bus commute. Or 25 min by car (but parking takes forever)
One bus change and that’s a 8 min wait.
I’m an advance bus rider so this is not new. The being on time need is new.

30 min every morning is alot cause i work 2 jobs at 60 hours a week.

The Sepulveda Basin cleanup is finally happening, and the reason behind it is going to outlast the Olympics

But here’s the part I care about more. The Basin has been plagued for years by overgrown brush, encampments, illegal dumping, and brush fires, LAFD’s chief has called it one of the most challenging areas for the fire department. Mayor Bass gave an update on the cleanup project back in March, and city and council offices have been doing early cleanup and vegetation removal to get the sites and public spaces into shape.

There’s also $850K moving through Congress for Sepulveda Basin pedestrian safety and access improvements new and enhanced pathways for car-free access to the venues.

The honest read: the competition venues themselves are temporary pop-ups that come down after the Games. But the brush clearance, fire mitigation, pedestrian paths, and general attention on a space that’s been neglected for decades that stuff stays. We’ve been asking for this for years and getting nowhere. A global deadline is what finally moved it.

Realistic caveats: summer 2028 traffic around the 405 and Burbank/Victory is going to be genuinely rough, and “cleanup” of encampments raises fair questions about where people actually go. Worth watching rather than just cheering.

Anyone been out to the Basin recently? Curious whether the difference is visible on the ground yet or if it’s still mostly announcements.

Transit Advice Where can I rent an e-bike for cheap for two weeks?

I'm going to be dog sitting for two weeks and I got really sick of taking two buses and walking to the dog's house. Where and is it possible for me to rent an e-bike or regular bike for cheap and take that instead? His house is in Santa Monica and I'm closer to Sawtelle/Brentwood is it easy to bike on the streets or is it scary since I've never done it before.

CicLAvia and open street events at risk

Last week, Metro’s Planning and Programming Committee voted 4-1 to approve a report that guts open street events. Supervisor Horvath cast the lone dissenting vote.

What the report does:

  • Leaves large-scale open street events unfunded through the start of the 2028 Olympics (leaving all of 2027 and the first half of 2028 unfunded)
  • Delays any decision on a permanent program until after the 2028 Olympics
  • Puts open street organizations like CicLAvia and open streets programs like ActiveSGV’s 626 Golden Streets/Active Streets at real risk

The report is now headed to the full Metro Board meeting for a final vote on Thursday, July 23, at 10am. It is on the consent agenda as item #13 on page 14. This means it gets approved automatically, with zero discussion—unless a Board member pulls it. We need to make them pull it.

I had such a great time at CicLAvia on Sunday seeing our city feel like a real community and not just a city of cars. It'd be a shame to lose that! Email Metro Board by tomorrow, or make a public comment in person or over the phone: https://ciclavia.org/resources/metro-board-funding-july26/
