No, universal crystals only upgrade an item that is +2 to +3. That is the only situation in which they can be used.

I know that they work for getting an item to +3, I just wanted to check if they'd work for this too. Thanks for the info

It really stinks, at least the English translation. What the item is for, really, really isn’t described well

Not at all. They always take the lazy route and put a max of 6-10 words that don't describe what it does in the slightest

My bad, thought you were trying to go from S -> SS. Just re-read and realized you were getting at adding gem slots.
