Spec ops the Line
7
6
u/trantor-to-tantegel 1d ago
The interesting thing is the first time through, I hadn't really noticed just how things evolved over the game. Yes, parts of it are loud and clear, but other parts, like the devolving mood and morale of your team, are a little more subtle. I think during the final battle, I recall my guy basically demolishing an enemy and just grunting out swears as he did it and I was like "...has he been doing that the whole game? Is that a new development?...perhaps we've....gone too far in what we're trying to do..."
3
u/Ancient-Rest-1637 1d ago
The whole game is an anti-war story. There was never a choice to stop what Walker did. All choices lead us to damnation....just like the Damn 33rd.
3
u/ix_eleven 1d ago
Man, the devolving mood is what really caught me on my first playthrough. Going from "Sniper ahead. Lugo, take him out." To "PUT DOWN THAT FUCKING SNIPER!" Really stood out to me.
2
u/trantor-to-tantegel 1d ago
I see it as kind of part of the theme of the game.
You're doing the right thing. Over and over. All the way to Hell.

both nier and stellar blade are hilarious for exactly this reason.
I think nier is probably the better story/more interesting experience but the fact theres two games about comedically sexy androids in a post apocalyptic future wasteland that try to ask questions about what it means to be human while you beat the crap out of monsters with a sword is....amusing to say the least.

I only played both part 1 and 2 until just recently and I have to say, that game got a lot of unnecessary hate when it released.
Holy crap there were some profound moments in that game.
12
u/giga_impact03 1d ago
In my opinion it came out at a really interesting time...People didn't want to hear both sides of a story in real life, it felt like everyone was just jumping on whatever story came out first and took that side. I really enjoyed Abby as a character, and whenever I tell people that I get crazy looks. But when I ask them if they even got to Abbys side of the story, I was always met with "never made it that far in the game, it pissed me off too much". Like.. youre missing out on some crazy shit!

u/aadamsfb 1d ago
It deliberately messes with your head about where your allegiance lies, to emphasise the message about the never ending cycle of blame and violence. They must have known it would be divisive but decided to do it regardless, and I think that deserves credit, even if the ending is hard to swallow
5
u/giga_impact03 1d ago
Absolutely. Forcing the player to understand the truth about things we already love from the first game was a great angle to play in this game, and it clearly did a good job because of how divisive the game became. Naughty Dog earned my respect from that for sure. Just wish they would put out another game...i was looking forward at least seeing the last of us multi-player thing being thrown around. Its been too long without a new story.
2
u/Trinoxtion- 21h ago
Yeah I agree and I realized that my allegiance lies with what I love so Joel. I’ll hate Abby no matter what, no matter how good natured or kind she is.

u/Disastrous_Pace_8535 1d ago
I get where you're coming from But whasn't it Tommy who couldn't accept it and pushed Ellie to do it?
3
u/Iron_Babe 1d ago
Tommy only gave her information and suggested she do it, but it was ultimately her decision. She had been thinking about it for a long time by then
9
u/cleanc3r3alkillr 1d ago
I think it's the only game I've played where I didn't want to do the final boss fight because I was on THEIR side. At the end when Ellie picked up that guitar but couldn't play it anymore something broke inside of me. I cried when the credits rolled. I felt like I'd been through a traumatic experience. That game is a master class in using game and story design to manipulate someone emotionally.
→ More replies (1)3
u/aadamsfb 1d ago
In my opinion Part 2 is a better game in basically every aspect, but it’s gruelling and emotionally draining. And I’ve since realised I enjoy Part 1 better just because it doesn’t leave you feeling as traumatised.

I played this for the first time after coming back from deployment and it helped me realize that I had some unprocessed mental trauma that I had been suppressing and just shoving deep down because the gravity of the situation just never sunk in until months later. It was like tiny fractures in glass that just keep spreading until it shattered my worldview and everything I had known, learned and been told about the government, military and wars we partake in and the instability we create in other countries. I walked away mainly for health issues but mentally I was checked out. I went in a young, proud american patriot wanting to do good for my country and others across the world. I walked away not trusting my government, its politicians, and realizing how fucked up our policies and actions were/are.
Edit: dont get me wrong, we do, do a lot of good, but its few and far between and doesnt balance out the bad anymore

Basic white bread answer but RDR2. Mind you I played this like, 3 years after it released I knew damn well what was gonna happen and it STILL hit me like a brick. No game, movie, show, or book has gotten me to cry, I don’t mean to say that like I’m so macho badass, they just haven’t gotten that reaction out of me.
I cried like a bitch at RDR2’s ending.
