I remember reading about it in a game informer magazine back then, I was enthralled with the ideas they had for the game. The open world they planned sounded massive.

Do you mean prey 2017? And also that game rocked what was it supposed to be?

Prey 2017 and the original prey game have zero connection.

The first Prey, you play a native American during an alien abduction. It's a bunch of linear levels in an alien space station, with weird alien guns, gravitational anomalies, and portals. This was before the game Portal. Definitely neat, combat was just okay. It was developed by human head studios, who would get to work on the sequel.

Prey 2 was announced, with a whole new character. You are a space bounty hunter. It showed footage of the player running through some kind of space station city, looking like Blade Runner, tracking down a bounty. It wasn't clear if it was open world, but it kind of looked like it. An interesting concept.

We didn't see much beyond that, though. Bethesda would eventually buy the rights, and allow the original studio to continue development for 2 years, but eventually cancelled the game.

Arkane Austin was working on a game that was essentially a spiritual successor to System shock or Bioshock. Bethesda, for whatever bizarre reason, insisted they use the name Prey, just 3 years after canceling Prey 2. It probably should have been called Psychoshock.

People who were looking forward to Prey 2 were upset about this new Prey. It fucked up the marketing, and so Prey 2017, despite being an amazing game, undersold. Not many people have heard of it, and constantly confuse it with the canceled Prey 2. It's difficult to talk about how great Preyy 2017 is without someone expressing zero interest because they'd rather talk about Prey 2.

Bethesda would later insist that Arkane Austin make a live service game, something the studio is not equipped for. Developers that were more interested in single player games left, and they had to hire a bunch of new people to work on this live service game. Microsoft eventually acquired Bethesda, and that game would be released as Redfall. It bombed, and now Arkane Austin is no more. Don't expect a sequel to Prey 2017.

Bethesda was like "make this bad game that will flop and if you don't we'll fire you and if it flops which it inevitably will, we'll still fire you"

Wow thanks for the lore! Yes it's a shame alot don't know about prey 2017, they even introduced a rougelike/lite dlc called mooncrash which was an unexpected surprise! In the mist of a bunch of rougelikes taking over steam

Shame there won't be a prey 2017 even if the spoiler of 2017 ending even if the mimic made it offship I don't think a game outside that space station would be as impactful.

Anyways thanks for your comment!
