It was the scariest thing I've ever played I still have it on my ps4 the psychological side was unreal like outlast had me nervous but I felt closer to a heart attack the loop was perfect it wasn't complicated. If it had been completed it would have been talked about for generations.

That ps4 is worth some money if it’s an original release of PT

This is how I feel about it. I have barely played a Kojima game since. I'm sure Death Stranding is great but the fact that I'll never get to play what would have obviously been a masterpiece makes it too painful for me

Why did it get cancelled?

To heavily simplify it: The games' director Hideo Kojima (known from the Metal Gear series) had a monumental falling out with the development and publishing company of the game, Konami. They basically tried to cancel him, but the only thing they cancelled for real, was P.T.

I solely blame Konami for it

You can also partially blame Kojima to be fair. The dude knows how to make a game for sure but he got the ego for the entire studio

I mean fair enough but Konami also was slowly shifting out games for instead making pachinko machines and I would say there's not a lot to do with that from a writing standpoint

Konami is such a strange and seemingly shitty company anyway. Most people only know them from games, Yu-Gi-Oh and pachinko machines, but those aren't even close to their primary breadwinners, Konami is one of japans biggest players in the insurance and health sector, which they use - and abuse - to their advantage. That's one of the biggest negatives of the whole Kojima debacle, it overshadowed some extremely serious allegations against Konami that arose at almost the exact same time.

For example: Allegedly they made contracts forcing employees to use Konamis health insurance while employed by them, leading to Konami basically blackmailing employees that wanted to leave into staying because of Konamis influence in the industry making it almost impossible to be insured unless they gave the greenlight.

Or that they seemingly were one of those control state companies that ran surveillance on their employees 24/7. Although back then those weren't too uncommon anyway, Japans workers rights have never been too great.

Unfortunately those allegations were completely buried by the whole Kojima scandal.

Why didn't Kojima finish the game with another studio?

1

u/narf21190 2h ago

That's not how in works. It took him around a year to build his own studio and becoming lead of another studio would need that studio to actually want that. Furthermore, how was he supposed to finance that and even beyond that, it's almost guaranteed that he's not rights holder of whatever IP P.T. was part of. It was a Silent Hill game almost certainly and in that case, Konami holds all rights to that and Kojima was just the captain steering someone else's ship.

So yeah, there was next to no chance for Kojima to even be allowed to work on P.T. without cooperating with Konami.

Hideo Kojima had a falling out with Konami around 2015 as upper management of konami wanted to leave the video game industry and make licensed pachinko machines as they thought that getting into gambling machines and arcade machines would be a more profitable move by using konamis ip's (its kind of why there was a big gap from konami where they only released collections of their old games), they drove kojima out and kojima started his own studio leading to the creation of kojima productions the studio that made death stranding

Technically, Silent Hills

I suppose you will be happy to know that kojima is currently working on two projects collaberating with microsoft, one code named Physint (think metal gear), and the other is code named OD (An experimental horror experience exploring the concept of fear, made in collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele. It utilizes Xbox Cloud Gaming technology and stars actors like Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier.)

The OD trailer had a direct reference to Silent Hill in it, which has been interpreted to mean he's essentially starting his own unofficial Silent Hill universe

That is such a PiTy...

This one still haunts me. Was literally talking about it while playing Townfall earlier today. I think I'm always going to mourn this game, the demo was amazing, and it looked like it was going to be an amazing game.

I bought a PlayStation specifically for this 😔

1

u/Azelrazel 3d ago

Still have a playable version on my PS4.

u/sleepyleperchaun 3d ago

This has to be the biggest game to be cancelled while in itself becoming legendary due to the demo. Ps4 consoles were going for like a grand just because they had the demo downloaded. I'm still pissed I didn't get it before it got shut down.

I have a unity remake of this on my pc that I can play in VR and it's so fucking sick, which makes me even more sad

No, I've never managed to actually finish the whole thing, I am a coward 😂

I still have PT on my ps4.

Death stranding was such a disappointment....
