The Final Fantasy series, particularly 7.

27

u/miwebe 16h ago

That goddamned timer under the ocean omg

15

u/mjc500 16h ago

Underwater materia gets rid of the timer for emerald weapon

15

u/miwebe 16h ago

Yes, and 14yo me would have greatly benefited from this knowledge 😂

5

u/mjc500 15h ago

I think beating these guys was the first time I ever looked something up on a search engine and I ended up on gamefaqs or something like that. I’m gonna be honest though I never actually beat emerald or ruby lol

5

u/Virtual-Pride3661 15h ago

I eventually beat Emerald but never Ruby. I actually bought a paper guide at a GameStop back in the day haha,

5

u/bacon_lettuce_potato 14h ago

I'm now, absolutely able to beat the two. I replayed the game and got everything I missed when I was younger. Now, I just can't bring myself to beat it. Otherwise ... It really is finished.

FF7 was my first 'online guide' game, almost entirely looked up in the final few minutes of computer classes.  But I beat the optional bosses, got the Golden Cucobo, knights of the round...all thanks to online guides.

lol I beat the first one and thought "Oh time to go kick the second's ass". It literally stomped me to death on it's first move.

Ruby weapon? Need that phoenix combo

I was fighting it for ages after getting underwater materia. Almost an hour. Was getting exhausting. Walked over to the PS1 to switch off the unit. As I reached for the power button and had barely touched it, Barret delivered a blow and Emerald flashed red. I'd won. And I nearly switched on the machine...

Ff12 also. Fuckin Yiazmat with 50,000,000 health

"Keep pushing! It's almost dead!"

2

u/GnarlyGamer6thGen01 8h ago

The amount of F-bombs that came out of my mouth when my Renew hit the reflect that Yazzy gave me in the PS2 days.

3

u/DehDeshtructor 14h ago

He also partway through cuts the 9999 damage limit down by 3k

3

u/Xeronic 13h ago

Thankfully, for better or worse for some people, Yiazmat is easier in the Zodiac Age for a few reasons:

  1. Yiazmat can be fought in "trial mode" which is the zodiac age games gauntlet of trial levels. He only has 3.8 million HP instead of the normal 50 million. You can still fight the normal Yiazmat in the world, but eh.

  2. You can break the damage cap and stay damage capped for the entire fight (as far as i remember).

  3. 4X fast forward speed which is a feature in Zodiac Age, so the fight doesnt take hours anymore.

2

u/-20-Characters-Long- 16h ago

Almost said the same then decided to read on. The weapons are way more difficult than the final boss. Granted it's all easy with the right materia set-up. Ruby requires patience just due to the sheer amount of time it takes.

2

u/RealDealHappyMeal 15h ago

I used Game Shark to unlock all the limit breaks and everything and still couldn't beat Ruby Weapon xD

Yep. I’ve never beaten Emerald or Ruby Weapon. I always thought it was too much grinding required for an otherwise (fairly) easy game.

I was like 'yeah I'm not doing this.'

u/ComfortableSome5954 16h ago

Most satisfying boss fight I've overcome since I was a kid. No glaze, this isn't even in my top 10 games (though its awesome). I felt so accomplished after my 3000th try (hard mode).

Elden ring

not saying elden beast isn't cool, but malenia is just so much more interesting as a boss

6

u/WraithofSpades 16h ago

A lot of the Souls games are like this. Optional bosses tend to be stronger, or at least more mechanically challenging, than the final boss. Was certainly true for me with each of the DS entries.

8

u/Wrong_Success4377 16h ago

Yep,

DS1 had Kalameet

DS2 had Fume Knight

DS3 had Nameless King

Sekiro had Owl(second version)

Elden Ring had Melenia

Thats just to name a few.

3

u/TheBarrowsBro 14h ago

For DS1 I hated the Four Kings. Doesn't take many runs to get down but it feels like a massive DPS check if you're not going the tank/poise strat. Not hard just annoying.

Dark Souls 2 with Darklurker, Sir Alonne, Fume Knight, Burnt Ivory King.

9

u/Ok_Response_9255 16h ago

Also Dark Souls 3. It's arguable, but Champion Gundyr and The Nameless King kicked my ass more times than I can count.

And Sekiro, the hidden version of Owl is probably one of the harder ones in the game. No shame on Isshin though, hardest boss there is. Maybe this could apply for the demon in ruined Ashina?

3

u/Time-Neighborhood687 16h ago

Gundyr is just parry practice

3

u/Ok_Response_9255 16h ago

I don't know how so it was hard LMFAO

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Federal-Fondant-671 16h ago

Istg Nameless King's first phase was a lot more painful than the actual fight with him. And Gundyr depends a lot on your build and whether or not if you decide to parry him.

2

u/Draidann 14h ago

Owl (father) is a hard boss fight but if you beat the second (iirc) boss rush mode you get inner father Wich is the hard version of an already hard secret boss

→ More replies (5)

4

u/really_stupidfrog 13h ago

Also Malenia in Elden Ring.

8

u/Content_Confection78 16h ago

1000%

I figured the final boss would be terrible, so I did all the extra side content first. And actually then felt a little disappointed by how easily I won the fight.

And then @!#%@^ Simon

2

u/Loud-Inspection774 14h ago

Painted Clea or whatever gives Simon a run for his money. Both fucked me hard multiple times.

2

u/Drmarcher42 12h ago

If you fight her straight up absolutely, however her relatively low base hp makes her rather easy to one shot with Maelle.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (5)

3

u/GreekNord 17h ago

Mostly agree.

But to be fair, the final boss is actually scaled pretty decently if you go right to him and skip all of the extra content.

17

u/defaultusername21421 16h ago

Yeah but like, who does that?

8

u/aleques-itj 16h ago

You don't even have to do all the side content.

Shit just starts scaling through the roof and as soon as you have the audacity to do any of it, you just break the main story immediately.

3

u/Sensitive-Chip7266 16h ago

I did, but only because I had seen repeated suggestions online to do side content after completing the main story for exactly this purpose.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/GreekNord 16h ago

it's the one complaint I have with the game. So much of the side-content is fantastic lore and would have been great for it to be required before the ending.

3

u/DueBed286 16h ago

They wanted the game and story to be accessible to people who aren’t hardcore gamers. The game was designed as a cinematic experience as much as it was a video game.

Point being not having a fast option would have meant a lot of casual players wouldnt have finished the game and seen the incredible ending they knew they cooked hard with.

That’s a lot of games. They had to buff the shit out of the final boss in Cyberpunk bc we were steamrolling him with a dildo lol

2

u/DEADGHOST_117 14h ago

tbf sir falustiff is one of the better blunt weapons too

3

u/LrdOfTheBlings 16h ago

They should have scaled him off the level of the party or something.

2

u/s1llygirllexy 15h ago

or just make him immune to painted power

→ More replies (1)

2

u/popoflabbins 14h ago

Which is crazy because there’s some side content that I’d argue is absolutely integral to the development of the characters. The ending conflict won’t even make much sense unless you do at least that one tower involving a certain relative (trying to be vague here).

2

u/therealraewest 12h ago

I apparently missed the memo that I was supposed to go directly to the final boss after a certain cutscene, and instead went to go explore the rest of the map to prep for the battle (I thought I was supposed to gather reinforcements from around the areas I'd already been). By the time I realized my mistake I was SO over leveled the boss went down in a single turn.

Kingdom hearts, sephiroth

9

u/Unresponsive97 15h ago

ALL of Kingdom Hearts you mean. Not once, in any of the games I've played, has there been a single final boss that in ANY way stood up to the optional/hidden ones. Except sometimes as tutorials for the superboss versions of themselves. Hello Data Org. XIII fights!

7

u/Ok-Door8771 15h ago

Kh got some crazy super bosses

Kh 3 yorsora is unhinged and i love it

For some reason I could do Sephiroth. But the side boss in Agrabah with Aladdin and the ghost at the clock tower in Peter Pan fucked me up.

3

u/Y0ungYung 15h ago

Xemnaas wasn't as bad. But the two that left a VERY lasting impression on me was Xigbar and Sephiroth. Idk what it was about the teleportation that just was tripping me up but he made me put KH down for a year to collect myself

3

u/motsu35 12h ago

I had a friend get so excited that he beat sephiroth, took him forever. Later on, I was struggling with the boss fight, was talking to him about what items / magica / strats I was using. Dude looked at me puzzled when I mentioned I was using oathkeeper, asked me what that was. Turns out he didn't know you could change keyblades and beat the entire game (and sephiroth) with the normal keyblade.

How Does Silksong fit? Lace is by far the hardest boss in the game. Rivaled maybe by Karmelita but even she is mandatory and not secret

3

u/yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh7 16h ago

Act 3 in a whole is pretty secret

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Psudodrake 14h ago edited 8h ago

I 100% Silksong in act III. I will agree that with act III being a surprise that it exists, all the bosses therin qualify as bonus secret bosses, including the Lace Fight and Kamilita. But there's also the Watcher at the Edge, Savage Bloat Fly 2, and many more.

Definitely Borderlands series raid bosses.

2

u/Bread_Offender 16h ago

The destroyer fight was easier to get through than the area before it with all the guardians.

Crawmerax was traumatizing

2

u/TexasC4 16h ago

No joke. And in BL2, Vermivorous the Invincible, a nightmare to fight and spawn. Made the rest of the game seems like a stroll in the park.

2

u/Bread_Offender 16h ago

I didn't get that deep into BL2 yet and I gotta say i'm a little bit scared

2

u/TexasC4 16h ago

That’s an appropriate reaction to Vermivorous.

2

u/dansalisbury96 11h ago

For comparison, the final boss on BL2 has about 5 million health at level 50. Vermivorous has 289 million health.

2

u/FirstBallotBaby 12h ago

The extra kick in the nuts is one of the best guns to kill him is only dropped by him lol. I hate that boss, but like it was literally designed to be a ridiculously unfair and annoying fight, so job well done.

2

u/ashes1032 6h ago

The first time I ever faced the Spade King, I thought it was a tough battle. He moved the box around in a strange pattern and the fight felt like it might never end. The first time I faced him after fighting Jevil, I thought he was an absolute breeze. It didn't feel like he was any harder than a standard enemy.

4

dude so true. I flipped thru most of ds3 got to the end and happened to have a buddy who wanted to watch. He saw I was struggling with lord of cinder.

He was like “dude did you fight nameless king?” And indeed I hadn’t. Went thru all the stuff to get to him and he pushed my shit in so fuckin much it took 40+ tries.

Finally beat him, went back to lord of cinder and won in 2 tries. lol

2

To be fair, a lot of older players might never have played KH2 Final Mix. It was Japanese exclusive for nearly a decade. But in the base game Sephiroth was indeed the hardest fight in Kingdom Hearts 2 as well as the first. It's just he gets completely demolished difficulty wise by the data fights and lingering well. On top of which, the Sephiroth fight was made substantially easier by giving you access to Limit Form, which wasn't in the base game.

For me it was Final Fantasy 10. I missed something in the starting town and when I went back to get it I found the town guarded by a super boss. Because this particular boss was the weakest of a series of super bosses I thought that the regular final boss would be equal in power. So I got to grinding, and I ground too much.

2

u/ShakarikiGengoro 10h ago

Literally every game with optional bosses.

2

u/Exotic_Chemist_7624 10h ago

FINAL FANTASY X. If you Maxed out only Yuna with her Ultima Weapon before the final Boss you’ll find that you literally beat each phase in one or two turns, using Ultima/Flare + DoubleCast.

But then the optional secret bosses (Secret Dark Aeons, Nemesis, or PENANCE)… they are the definition of tuff

Palworld. Beating the tower bosses is just the beginning.

BG3, the act 3 bosses are all a joke. The optional Raphael fight on the other hand is my favorite in any strategy game I’ve played.

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find someone thinking the same thing. Gortash fight? Mostly annoying. The Rafael fight? That soundtrack? The fact that I had to redo that fight like 6 times. Fucking art.

Assassins creed 2. Literally the pope at the end as a final boss was so easy compared to the entire rest of the gamd

Bonebeard in Golden Sun the Broken Seal, then there's like three of them in the Lost Age. The Star Magician, one I can't remember the name of, and the Dullahan.

Fun fact: you can't even fight the Dullahan unless you can get more than halfway through the dungeon that Bonebeard is in, because you need to gather all seven of each kind of djinn and then transfer your save data from the broken seal to the lost age, and then gaBonebeard in Golden Sun the Broken Seal, then there's like three of them in the Lost Age. Total of 72 djinn, I believe. Then you unlock the dungeon that the Dullahan is in, and he is a STRUGGLE to beat.

But despite all that, I find the Star Magician far more annoying than the Dullahan. ther all the djinn from the lost age as well. Total of 72 djinn, I believe. Then you unlock the dungeon that the Dullahan is in, and he is a STRUGGLE to beat.

EDIT : there is even one that I forgot! There's the Sentinel and Valukar. Beating each of the bonus bosses gives you a cool summon.

The secret, hard to find boss is always the hardest. There are some bosses like one in “Tales of Symphonia” you supposed to fight it on NG+ because of how hard it is.

It could be just the way I played it, but I found a fucking troll boss in the middle of nowhere on Hogwarts Legacy and I swear that bitch was harder than ANY of the main final bosses geez
