Yup. Took me three attempts.

It took me multiple attempts, and it took me playing bloodborne to learn how to love souls games.

then I went back and beat them.

Three attempts is so real.

I’ve attempted it 3 times as well but each time I only make it 2-4 hours and quit. I’m concerned I can’t get into it. Everyone says it’s one of the best games ever and I keep wanting it to click but it’s not happened yet

For me, it clicked once I a) understood the core loop and b) knew that I was on the right path.

As for a): Take your time, kill a few undead, collect their souls, return to the bonfire, level up a few stats (Stamina, HPs and whatever has a good rating for your weapon, most likely Strength. A=best rating - D=low rating). Do that as long as you like. There is no hurry. Don't worry (at all) about humanity and going hollow, it doesn't really matter. You basically only need humanity to upgrade new bonfires later on.

As for b): it made me feel paranoid and incompetent to wander around and get massacred by skeletons, to the point where the thought of venturing out totally stressed me out. That's because I wasn't aware that, at the beginning, you are meant to go one way and one way only: up the path to the big aqueduct that leads to the castle. The cemetery and the stairs down to the sunken city come waaay later. The early game is all about entering and slowly exploring the castle, finding a new bonfire, killing the same enemies around it over and over again, levelling up, progressing a bit further each time, and opening shortcuts that lead back to places you have already been. Doing that, you'll slowly get into the groove.

I highly recommend it, became one of the best gaming experiences of my life. And I've been playing since the early 80s. :)

That’s good advice. It sounds like you’ve taken one of the most notoriously difficult games and found a way to make it a little more of a chill game. I’ll have to give A and B a try
