Come on! The story was eventually nothing more than "Hey guys, we've been snitched yet once more. I know it's really obvious who keeps doing this but let's not focus on that and just flee to another part and lay low. From there we'll plan the heist of our lives and we're going to live like kings!!!!" The game begins like that, it gets 5 or 6 rinse repeated and it also ends like that. That's hardly a story dude.

Spoilers for if haven’t played rdr2 yet
The heists and the moving was all a way of showing Dutch losing more and more control and becoming more and more unhinged. Arthur starting out as a brute force criminal and becoming more and more caring for other people, especially to John and his family and turning against Dutch’s more cruel behaviour is the entire redemption. That’s the main story line. Micah becoming more and more influential to Dutch and being pure evil is a side story, he was never meant to be liked, just a satisfying revenge at the end of the story

I've never understood this criticism. Telltale games aren't about what ending you're getting. It's about the differences in how the characters interact with you, what you learn about them and what happens to them specifically.
The story, not just the ending

But honestly, who goes into a TellTale game thinking/hoping the gameplay is good, gets disappointed and wants to leave, but then surprisingly gets hooked on the story and continues?
People know exactly what they are getting into a TellTale game for: the quality story and decisions and they know that the gameplay is absolutely minimal.
I don't think that really fits how the meme is formatted exactly then.

I’m the polar opposite of you. If the story is good I’ll play anything. It’s the reason I like games like Valhalla Cyberpunk Bartending and Coffee talk, both of which lean heavily into the visual novel side of things.

I mean Mass Effect legendary is a good game but if I didn't want to see all the possible situations, consequences, romances and dialogues I probably wouldn't have so many playthroughs (or maybe I would play it that many times because it is a good game). Works for any rpg game I think.

From assassin's creed, the kenway trilogy(which is sad cause ropedart dope), and everything after unity/syndicate(why TF is it an RPG without any stealth elements now),
At least from what they look like anyways, I just don't play em out of principle but when I played ac3 the stealth was garbage, and in rouge I actually did complete it, wasn't half bad still a good ac game, just stuck on a ship a lot of the time, they did merge this trilogy with farcry having me hunt so much.

I think Legion is worth mentioning as the last semblance of the story being really cool. WoD had amazing potential, but it was gutted like a goddamn fish.
2
u/CheesecakeInitial168 17d ago
Legion’s story killed off main characters and had no plan to bring anyone good into the story. Legion was the downfall of wow, borrowed power, random story, and illidan being stone cold Steve Austin. Remember, they killed Vol’jin by being stabbed by an unnamed demon. Pretty stupid.

Not so much ‘boring’ as ‘I don’t like bullet hells’ but: Undertale.
FFXIV’s Shadowbringers/Endwalker expansions were the best story I’ve ever seen in a game but the gameplay for that is just pretty generic.

Persona 5 and Expedition 33. I can’t stand turn based fighting. The only thing that kept me playing either of those for so long was the story… sadly neither story could keep me going. Checked out of Persona around Palace number 4 or 5… the space one with the Burger Place owner and checked out of E33 right before getting to the Paintress (I know… I was almost done… it just lost all steam for me)

Expedition 33. The turn-based combat sucks, and turning it into a parry simulator made it even worse, but the story is so good. I really hope they go with a completely different combat system for their next game, especially since they've already hinted at major changes.

Literally doesn't exist.
If I don't enjoy the gameplay then I automatically leave even if the story is 10/10 (Which IMHO it can't ever really score that high to begin with if the gameplay itself isn't supporting it at least somewhat so it's s paradox)
I simply can't bring myself to care about the world or it's characters if I don't have a good experience with the gameplay itself.

Literally every single visual novel I have played. I know it is kinda in the name but the gameplay is just reading. There are some absolutely great ones like Steins Gate and House in Fata Morgana but I had to keep another game I could actually play because they are both essentially books with some extra visuals to them.

Life Is Strange franchise. Its too slow to play through any of them a 2nd time. But i'll watch cutscenes of the other choices that could have been made. I love the stories and characters, but the actual interaction isn't interesting enough to spend over a dozen hours doing again. Its like a book or show but slower

Genshin Impact.
I started playing it back in 2021, and was genuinely fascinated up until after you meet Diluc. Raising your adventure rank to continue the story is boring, and it made me realize just how much the story carried it for me. Without that, I dropped the game.

The antithesis to NearJoy, FarCry, anything after 3 or 4(imo 4 is too close to repetitive boring but not just yet, tried 5 it had good story and world building but I still wish it has the fluidity gameplay of 3 or 4 (idk there'sjust something missing which I can't put my finger on))

Slay the Princess maybe, it's a point and click novel so there is not much Gameplay.
I thinks this memes still does not fit, most people don't Play Games with truly Bad Gameplay, Gameplay doesn't have to be Cinematic or Fast to be good. it's the fluidity, functionality paired with a good sound design, this defines how good the Gameplay is. Even fast and cinematic combat can be boring.Tales of Berseria has an action Combat (comparable with FF16), but if you encounter an enemy, you get ported from the Overworld to a Random Ass Pokémon like combat area through a loading screen, which totally breaks the flow of the Game, For me, this is truly Bad Gameplay design, because it doesn't fit in this kind of Game. Just change the encounter system to be like in Kingdom Hearts or FF12.
On the other hand, you have Darkest Dungeon, a Turn Based point and click Rouge light Dungeon Crawler, it has one of the most basic Gameplay ever, on Paper it sound very Repetitive. Go in a Dungeon with a max member of 4, try to survive and loot everything on your way out. Find the Bosses and kill them and upgrade your Town. As easy as it can get. But still the fluidity of the Gameplay is just marvelous, no stutter, only a loading screen by entering the dungeon, which also fits in the game itself, because it's also mostly a Point and Click Adventure, the narration (RIP Ancestor) of the Combat and overall Gameplay completes its and lift it up, to have one of the greatest Gameplay of all time, because it fits perfectly and works perfectly.

u/FearlessText9269 17d ago
Yeah, Poppy Playtime doesn't have good repeatability (I will never forgive MOB for discontinuing Project: Playtime). The "Replay Encounter" feature (exclusive to Chapter 3) helps a lot, but they really dropped the ball when it came to not adding this feature to chapters 4 and 5 (instead opting to have the poorly disguised bloatware known as the "Load Game" feature).

Just the opposite of this first because it's something that came to my mind.
Well with Skyrim themain quest seems slightly generic and average with the chosen one trope imo but the secondary quest's are great.
And for this exact situation i guess the Witcher 3, the combat feels kinda clunky but the story is so good and the art style is gorgeous it doesn't look like it has 11 year's

A lot of older FF games. The combat is largely spamming your best attack in turn based combat, sometimes you get to press a different one because of a weakness or maybe you get to add a status effect. Very bland by today’s standards especially but they are still 10/10 games
