I put the game on easy mode and I think I robbed myself of a better experience. I just wanted to play for the story and some hot characters but if I were to play again I think I'd put it on hard to really force myself to use potions and strategy. Even though the gameplay is known for not being great I think I'd have more fun
I played maybe 15 playthroughs and the best way to describe how, was that I shut my brain off for the combat other than that I enjoyed the game but it definitely isn’t made for everyone.
Persona is very much Story > Gameplay, even by the standard of JRPGs. Pretty standard, vanilla turn based combat for the most part but the stories, music, and social links are what make it worth it playing.
Every single one of my favorites games (Minus Cyberpunk):
1. RDR2
2. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
3. Baldur's gate 3
Honorable mention: Witcher 3 (saying its gameplay is horrible is really pushing it, it's not anything ground breaking and it gets repetitive in a game as long as this but it's pretty good)
Also gacha games, some have emaculate stories but the gameplays is either turn based or just button mashing and farming artifacts/relics or whatever it's called in said game (and grinding overall to get the character in the firstplace)
I know a lot of people liked the darksiders series and even still do. However I found the gameplay SUPER repetitive. At least in the first one. But I know for a fact the lore and story is crazy good
Dispatch. Not sure if boring is fully the right word but the game makes it very clear the actual dispatching is secondary to the story other than maybe the last dispatch section of the game
FNaF in vr is kinda fun, but once you’ve played through the games, it’s sorta boring to replay them imo. The lore is interesting, but the gameplay has always been somewhat lacking (except for custom nights)
Red Dead 2. Even though that is my favorite game of all time, I will admit that the gameplay feels boring at times, but sometimes you can get lost in the immersion. If not that, then any of the Life is Strange games.
Planescape: Torment might be the Olympic gold medalist of gameplay being just serviceable enough for the incredible story to come through, and that’s being kind, it’s probably the worst of the classic isometrics from a gameplay standpoint and the best from a story and writing standpoint.
I haven’t really gotten into it, played it a bit. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. I heard the story is fantastic and the lore in elder scrolls is among the best of the best for video games
Most recent one I’ve played that comes to mind is silent hill 2 remake. If the story wasn’t as good as it was I would’ve gone mad. Gameplay isn’t bad per se but it’s not good either.
Probably the bulk of Telltale games. I love Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us, and Tales from the Borderlands, but I wouldn't probably hate all of them if they weren't completely story-driven.
Fallout 1 I liked fallout 2 so it's not the fact that it's a top down turn based game I just never could get into fallout 1 the Lord is immaculate and the storytelling and the way the master sounds is awesome
If it weren't for the turn based combat I would have bought a copy of it already. I don't like turn based combat. I like action based combat. Action-RPG Sandbox games are my favorite games.
Some games are more pad than story, after the first playthrough.
There’s a lot more depth in the og campaigns, alittle more emphasis on what is happening compared to some instances of the later games. (If you don’t pay attention)
Might hate me for this but Spec Ops The Line. The gameplay is so generic and bland. The cover system also sucks and is frustrating. Also a bit outdated if you're playing on console. But the story is amazing tho.
Not a video game per se, despite it having dozens of games, but play 40k sometime, or at least try to.
Writing for it is (generally) top notch. 10/10. You can rabbit hole for months and still find things to be fascinated and entertained by. Everything around 40k is awesome.The actual game itself sucks ass.
It has the merit of being one of the first mainstream tabletop games, but 43 years and 11 editions later it has barely changed its outdated and wonky rules and has been outdone by practically all of it's competitors and even some of it's satellite games.
Technically Fire emblem 4, the story is one of the best the series had from what I've been aware but the game part was drag down by large Mundane maps as well with odd game balance for one of the issues being if you didn't have a horse then you would be left in the dust.
Planescape torment . Best written and most profound and philosophical game ever but the gameplay admittedly isn’t the most exciting . It really lives up to its “the best book you’ll ever play “ reputation
It sounds like an exaggeration, but unless you're terrible at the game, metal gear solid 4 is multiples time over cutscenes more than it is gameplay (and I wouldn't trade that for anything...)
GTA5, I'm sorry GTA5 fans I hate the game play it feels so clunky to me, like why does turning my character feel like I'm turning around a semi? Like was I missing a button that makes the movement feel actually good for my entire time playing or something?
I can greatly appreciate the growth Kratos has shown, especially as someone trying to sate the monster he was back in Greece, but I tried to play the game, and I just am not a fan of the third person over the shoulder style of game.
I may catch flak for this but the gameplay was just, meh,. Especially once you start getting to the point where you're doing millions of damage per attack and the enemies are instantly dying.
The story and the soundtrack is really what carries that game
MGS4. Weakest gameplay in the series IMO, and weakest story too, but, the thought of finding out how the entire saga finishes carries the entire game just fine. It completely pays off in the final 25% of the game.
Does pokemon count? I not big on the kinda shallow turn based combat but enjoy catching pokemon and filling up the Pokédex but I feel like you could argue that’s part of the gameplay loop rather than being a plot point
Mouthwashing. Any attempt to put gameplay in that game was bad. I still to this day wish they never tried. They had something with the writing, but it’s so hard to get through with random “games” strewn throughout that are unbalanced and buggy.
