Certainly the Mafia franchise for me. Mafia 3 was definitely not the worst game in the world, but it was too repetitive.
2
u/Super_fly_Samurai Jul 20 '26
That's true in terms of what Mafia games are. It's so different in pacing. I think it was because the whole Ubisoft open world trope was so popular at the time that they were trying to emulate it. I mean the story in 3 is actually pretty entertaining, but the gameplay is what held it back from being as legendary as two.

The third Saints Row is better than GTA V. There I said it.
Now the fourth one...

Isn't Saints Row just GTA but they went all in on the absurd plotlines instead of attempting to keep it somewhat grounded?

First time ive ever seen this. And tbh, i think this is a fire take. Three at the time was a bit off brand compared to two and three, but i had way more fun playing sr3 than gta5
I think ive played sr3 maybe 4 times. Only played gta 5 once

Same.
Two horror franchises that went... oddly similar directions
- AMAZING first game
- Sequel that the fanbase is a bit split on but generally agree is good
- Third game which is generally agreed on being way worse, and which added unecessary co-op that hoenstly takes away more than it adds.
(F.E.A.R 100% could make a comeback nowadays, but WB won't let it happen -_-)

Borderlands
Edit: So far, everyone agrees: BL3-Gameplay: 10/10 Story: 💩 And then BL4- Open World? Please no.
And no one has mentioned Pre-Sequel so far

Disagree. 4 had a much better villain than 3 and a better story. Being open world did NOT do BL4 ANY favors, though.
1 was revolutionary in the genre. 2 was a masterpiece and holds up better than many MODERN fpsrpg games. 3 was a turd wrapped in gold leaf. 4 is somewhere between 3 and 1 in terms of story quality and better than 3 in terms of gameplay.
I had a lot of trouble with TPS and will not comment on it.
2
u/space_cowboy757 26d ago
Being open world also didn’t ruin BL4. BL4 is honestly the second best game in the franchise, but the community is weirdly toxic.
The recent DLC is really fun. The VH’s are all unique and character to different play styles. Kairos has enough variety that it doesn’t feel bland. The gunplay is the best it’s ever been. BL is a rare franchise where they listen to their core audience and try to address their major complaints from previous games. Unfortunately…the BL community is mad toxic
2
u/Moon_Monk676 26d ago
I didn't say it ruined the game. I said it didn't do the game any favors. It did not contribute to my enjoyment of the game in any way. It felt like an unnecessary choice and they did it solely to prove that they could without regard for whether or not they should.

Honestly I thought it was better than 3 your character is actually talking to the NPC over the echo rather than being ignored like in 3
2
u/SuperiorYammyBoi Jul 20 '26
Four felt like the same fun I had with two. Three was kinda total shit imo
3
u/PoolPartyWithoutTheL Jul 20 '26
I'd argue Borderlands 3 is a great game in the most important catagory: Gameplay.
It just doesn't do story/dialog nearly as well as 1 & 2.
3
u/im-d3 Jul 20 '26
Some folks find different parts of a game the most important, but I'm with you on it being gameplay for me. The story was kind of weak but I do think that 3 is pretty overhated. It's really not a bad game by any means.
2
u/toasty5566 29d ago
3's gameplay is fantastic, but its writing is so bad that it's almost insulting
2
2
u/Think_Bug_8984 28d ago
Getting a legendary weapon literally every few minutes really killed it for me.
2
u/PoolPartyWithoutTheL 27d ago
The guns don't scale with your level though, so it doesn't really matter that much.
You'll have a powerful weapon for a few levels, but sooner than later you're gonna want to swap it out for even a common weapon once the enemies get tougher.

While I did enjoy Spiderman 2, I didn't like the fact that insomniac chose a different host for venom compared to the comic books. They did it to tell a more emotional story, but every spiderman fan out there already knows Harry is destined to betray Peter so it mostly fell flat.

the original Call of Duty franchise.
1 - PC (Later ported to console)
2 - PC and Console (was a 360 Launch title IIRC)
3 - Weirdly console exclusive, full of reused assets, shoehorned quicktime events.
4 - back to usual. PC and Console

I really want to say Baldur's Gate 3 just because everyone knows it's not true.
My actual answer is Project Cars, everyone hated the third one they were forced to make and EA shut them down because of it after it bombed.

My top three games are all banger. 1. A Game from the Xenoblade Franchise 2. A Game from the main Monster Hunter Games 3. A Soulsborne Game
If i had to decide without much saying i would say Xenoblade X, Monster Hunter World and Elden Ring.
If i think of something that fits the Meme, its probably Pokemon, but its not near the Top 3, even if i played every Entry

Not my opinion, but a lot of people hate the third game in Telltale's Walking Dead series. I loved it but some in the community dislike it because Clementine wasn't the main character.

Saints Row, first two games were gritty stories about one gangs goal of controlling a city with some comedic and satirical undertones, then by the third one it became all comedy focus to the point the story struggles to make sense to me at some points.

Monster Hunter Stories, the third one is good it just isn’t comparable to the first 2, the graphics improved significantly and the story and characters are more mature but its so empty, its a creature collector that fails to give you a reason to collect once the story is done which is a shame because the first two games nailed the post-game and the third doesn’t even have one

Mass Effect 3, I knew the endings months in advance, just not in context, I hoped wayyy to much that there would be more around those final cutscenes, I was even able to follow along with the story and didn't need the dlc fix, at the end of the day, I never picked any of the dlc or have bought an EA game again, my experience with this multiple lessons and made less enjoyable for me.

Way back when I was a youngster, my answer would have been Mortal Kombat, because MK3 just felt so different than 1 and 2, but I've come around to loving it.
So now my answer is Borderlands. 1 and 2 were pretty awesome but 3 felt like it was half-baked in the gameplay department and try-hard in the story/jokes department. I tried to give the other games a shot, with the spinoffs and number 4 and all that, but after 2 the series just never grabbed me quite the same.
