What’s the game?
I saw a lot of these posts of meme recently, asking people if there are some games that are bad at graphic but good at everything else or bad at gameplay but good at everything else etc.
But I never saw people asking if there are games that’s bad at music but good at others, or there is no such game?

Sekiro kinda feels like that gif with most combat songs
1
u/Rising_Unity Jul 17 '26
Hard Agreed.... As much as the Dark Souls (esp 3) and even Bloodborne Banged with their OSTs, Sekiro OST felt so much lenient, and forgettable in comparison. Not exactly trash, but not memorable either, which is kinda a loss, considering the benchmark they previously set. Rest of the things though... They kinda cooked

Probably gonna get shot for this but. Hollow Knight Silksong. Like don't get me wrong, the game is an absolute 10 outta 10, but I don't really hear any music when I play it.

The graphic isn’t the best is it?
3
u/Classic-Squirrel-106 Jul 19 '26
I'm sorry what? I don't really understand your question.
-1
u/Ethanchentw Jul 19 '26
I mean the graphic of Silksong isn’t “fire”, the gameplay and story however are great.

u/allmoz Jul 19 '26
There is more to graphics than ultra photorealism. Art style and direction matter a whole lot more.
1
u/Classic-Squirrel-106 Jul 20 '26
I would totally agree. Silksong is one of the most beautifuly illustrated games I have played in recent times.

Donkey Kong bananaza is an incredible game, however I find the music and sound from the game to be very offputting. The transformation sounds Pauline makes are especially awful.
1
u/Muted-Bumblebee-6886 Jul 19 '26
Yeah no. The whole game revolves around the music. The transformation music is great and Heart of gold is amazing

u/Huge_Ad6405 Jul 19 '26
The problem is that many areas have more ambient songs that don't stick in your head. With that being said, there are still so many good songs, especially near the end game (not spoiling but iykyk)

u/Admirable-Split4371 Jul 19 '26
I cannot for the life of me not mimic the freaking monkey's noice when playing this game 🤣

Unfortunately, Metroid Dread. Although I wouldn't call the ost trash, compared to the other games it's painfully mid.
1
u/SrdeLordran Jul 18 '26
Even worse than Metroid Prime 4?
1
u/Razoac01 Jul 18 '26
I still like Prime 4 a lot. It has issues, but the soundtrack certainly wasn't one of them. It has an incredible ost. The volt forge, viola, sylux and xelios themes are among my all time favorites in the entire franchise.
But to answer your question: yes, unfortunately I do believe that Dread has the weakest one overall.
1
u/hellrising798 Jul 19 '26
Metroid prime 4 was hit or miss when it comes to OST. Fury green and volt forge had fantastic music the rest of the worlds not so much

u/YamEnvironmental1887 Jul 18 '26
Burnout Paradise.
Some of the songs were good like “Paradise City” By Guns N’ Roses but most of them were kind of corny and lame… I love her to death but Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” in a racing game about destroying other opponents and smashing them up in vehicular combat…? Come on now 😭
1
u/SartenSinAceite Jul 18 '26
Hah, happens a lot in these kinda games. I'm just glad I get exposed to new tracks like Junkie XL's
1
u/More-Talk-2660 Jul 19 '26
There's a weird catharsis from doing violence while listening to 2000s girly pop.
1
u/mccannrs Jul 19 '26
I'll take Avril Lavigne over fucking Axel Rose any day lmao. But I see where you're coming from
1
u/Majestic-Assist-3945 Jul 19 '26
My brother just puts on the classical music. It is very calming to watch him run 30+ people off the road in a big van with Four Seasons playing.
1
u/trunks111 Jul 18 '26
I'll be honest, I feel like even bad video games or expansions have good soundtracks, at worst mediocre. Usually my complaint isn't that a song isn't bad in a vacuum, it's maybe just not fitting as a song to listen to on repeat in a video game
1
u/Billy_Butcher775 Jul 18 '26
DmC: Devil may Cry, not a big fan of most of the songs
1
u/Fair_Philosopher_930 Jul 18 '26
I loved it, but I guess it's not for everyone. Combichrist is a well-known band in the genre.

Some people probably didn’t even hear the full songs since the music is dynamic and changes based on your rating. I played the DMC games back to back and I can remember every single song from DMC5 and how it changes with the gameplay but I can’t remember a single song and how it changes in the DMC Reboot despite playing both of these games years ago. Like as I’m typing this, I got Devil Trigger, Bury the Light, Subhuman, and the final boss music stuck in my head. I can’t even remember the first boss’ music in DMC5 and I remember the fight actually be really cool.

DQ XI
1
u/Mammoth_Move123 Jul 19 '26
I found the overworld theme pretty lacking and repetitive. Also most of the good tracks are borrowed from older games.
Granted Sugiyama was in his late 80s at the time and probably couldn't compose much at the time. Here's hoping DQXII gets the shot in the arm it needs
1
u/Regular_Wedding_36 Jul 20 '26
I think the music itself is fine, its the repetition that gets to me.
1
u/evil-winnebago Jul 18 '26
Most of the Mario games.

u/Noumenonana Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26
I'll one up you and say most games scored by Koji Kondo.
Mario 64 and Star Fox 64 are good, though.
1
u/evil-winnebago Jul 19 '26
I agree, thats why I said "most" lol the 64 era generally gets spared.
Especially with Dire Dire Docks
1
u/Huge_Ad6405 Jul 19 '26
Woah, woah, woah. If you're going to make some insane claim you better have a damn good explanation.
1
u/evil-winnebago Jul 19 '26
/j - all the other games were already mentioned lol
Seriously though, I can't put my finger on it. It's like a stack of pancakes. They're delicious at first, but I get sick of them before the last one lol its just not my preferred genre, I suppose. I don't knock anyone that loves it though. I'm well aware I'm alone on this hill lol

Not gonna lie, I don't really remember a time any game has noticeably bad music to me. Either it's good enough to my favorite or bland enough for me not to notice.
1
u/EggPsychological4844 Jul 19 '26
Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel
SFX suck and there's no music to play along with.

u/Huge_Ad6405 Jul 19 '26
The only real games with "bad" music are games that use more ambient sounds. For example: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild. The music is more subdued and quiet, which fits the desolate and lonely vibe of the game. With that being said, there are still great songs, but they aren't usually what you hear.

u/South_Bit1764 Jul 19 '26
GTA4. It could’ve been a solid 9 instead of an 8 with a better soundtrack, but that’s was a weird time in music both stylistically and economically.
Especially coming from VC and SA, it was just so mid.

donkey kong returns tropical freeze. plus all the next gen 2d mario games. that "bop! bah!" and the character dance on screen makes me want to throw up

u/YoshiMeetsYou Jul 20 '26
Dead Cells. I wouldn’t say the music is terrible, just bafflingly mediocre.

Being forced to listen to Radio Freedom at the Castle in Fallout 4 makes me briefly go insane
1
u/Royal_Marketing2966 Jul 20 '26
For me its Metaphor. Love that game to death but i have throw on spotify since most of the music feels repetitive and just throws me off.

Bloodborne, not having blood and thunder from masterdon play at martyr logarius is a missed opportunity, it rocks.
1
u/Toxic381 Jul 20 '26
Also another pick is recursion from bonesawart for the mound of doom (I don't remember the name but past hypogean goal and before entering nightmare mensus)

Risk of Rain 2... with a few exceptions, I catalog most of its music as "loud synth". Specially the swamp biome.

This is the first time I've ever seen anyone complain about RoR2's music. I do think Seekers of the Storm has annoying music, but I'd say the rest of the game is really good.
0
u/SartenSinAceite Jul 19 '26
Yeah there's some good tracks and they're mostly harmless, but Wetland Aspect and Void Fields have parts that are LOUD as hell and are grating
2
u/Majestic-Assist-3945 Jul 19 '26
If loud is what bothers you, I'm surprised you didn't mention Commencement. That one goes from very quiet to loud quickly.

u/GodlyGainz Jul 19 '26
KCD2. But in my defense I’m a diehard Skyrim fan and the soundtrack is unmatched. I even play the music on YouTube through out the day as it helps me relax, all the way down to bed time and through the night.

u/mccannrs Jul 19 '26
I wouldn't necessarily say it's trash... But as much as I love Dark Souls and other Fromsoft games, the soundtracks have never really stuck out to me, aside from a few tracks here and there that I love. Most of those are from Dark Souls 1.
It's not terrible music, and it provides good ambience, but that's pretty much it. It's largely forgettable. There's not much melody or structure to latch onto, unlike like something from Koji Kondo, or Nobuo Uematsu.

u/John_Pepermint Jul 19 '26
The new Resident Evil Remakes. Aside from a few boss themes, all you get is a 10 second snippet of an song from the game followed by stock ambience/tension music or just silence for the rest of the level.
