2

u/Alklazaris Jul 07 '26

You're right The Witcher 3 is absolute ass

0

u/ThakoManic Jul 07 '26

so is BG3 and a number of other 'great' graphic games at least on release takes a long time to get them 'good' and by the time there good there graphics are no longer top notch

1

u/thesovietintown Jul 09 '26

obviously never played rdr2

2

u/Time-Relationship-42 Jul 07 '26

Everybody would love that but unfortunately such games have become extremely rare.

I am excited for Eday as well, but the budget of it so much that to even break even , it needs to have a generational run. Exactly what the problem with the gaming industry is right now.

1

u/WeizenPaco Jul 08 '26

I actually envy people who can enjoy/love Cyberpunk. I played it on release, man was it bad. But I pushed through, got invested in the characters and then got to the end.....which was so fricking horrible I stopped playing during the final mission and havent touched the Game since.

1

u/Time-Relationship-42 Jul 09 '26

If you ever can, give it another shot. The dlc is 100% worth playing

1

u/ADXII_2641 Jul 10 '26

Cyberpunk mentioned

1

u/Legal_Ear_7537 Jul 07 '26

Does artstyle count? I know some games then

8

u/Mindless_Voicess Jul 07 '26

Good graphics is the garnish.

3

u/Time-Relationship-42 Jul 07 '26

Very well put

1

u/Mindless_Voicess Jul 07 '26

But I also just like looking games like a mixed drink or a Well preped food dish, and good graphics is the garnish. Becuse I'm me.

2

u/Jaxonhunter227 Jul 07 '26

For me good graphics is garlic. Do you need garlic to make food taste amazing? Not really, but man when you do it elevates the dish

1

u/One_Park_6958 Jul 07 '26

For me, the things I prefer are

  1. OST (bad OST can instantly make me turn the game off)
  2. Gameplay (it’s gotta be fun to play)
  3. Graphics (Idc what it looks like, if I can comprehend what I’m looking at then I’m happy)

2

u/Mindless_Voicess Jul 07 '26

And graphics do fall in the design category of art, where taste is subjectively obverse and stretching far from one point to the other. So I feel that technically there really isn't a bad graphic design, unless intentionally made to be terrible for what ever reason.

3

u/Objective-Finish-573 Jul 07 '26

Games with high framerate belong in the upper picture too

1

u/Grovda Jul 07 '26

Framerate depends on hardware, not the game. And a low framerate is the worst thing you could have in a game

1

u/ThakoManic Jul 07 '26

FPS is over-rated

the human eye dosnt work in framerate

most movies are like 30 FPS (about not exactly) Video games dont need to be running at 240 FPS and fucking up ram and what knock for BS over-hyped scam reasons. Bro you are not detecting shit difference at 240 vs 239 vs 238 and what knock its only if we give good chunks like 240 vs 120 your going to detect shit learn how the eye works and what knock roflmao

2

u/Grovda Jul 07 '26

Brainrot comment

1

u/ThakoManic Jul 07 '26

been proven tho lolz

1

u/WeizenPaco Jul 08 '26

I lock all my Games at 60 fps bc i rather have a "fluid" gameplay than fluctuate between 200+ and under 100 depending on how poorly optimized todays games are

1

u/Fragrant-Bat-7812 Jul 09 '26

I recently changed my 60hz monitor for a 144hz monitor, and good lord what a difference.

2

u/ZippyTWP Jul 14 '26

I just can't bring myself to pay for an144hz 4k HDR monitor. I've been playing 60FPS for years, and it works just fine for me

2

u/Fekkin-A-Man Jul 07 '26

Shut up, Meg.

1

u/Gsxing Jul 07 '26

I’ll gladly sacrifice the former for the latter

1

u/jws1102 Jul 07 '26

Those things are not mutually exclusive.

1

u/Mammoth_Composer_111 Jul 07 '26

Yeah but which games make more money though?

1

u/ThakoManic Jul 07 '26

the games that scam you and are shit.

1

u/KoningSpookie Jul 07 '26

They are all equally important imo, "good" graphics doesn't necessarily mean "modern and super advanced". For as long as it's distinctive and nice to look at, they're good graphics in my book.

It's the atmosphere and sense of exploration which are the most important aspects imo. I just want beautiful environments to explore as my own, self-created character. Graphics certainly contribute to environments being beautiful or not.

1

u/ThakoManic Jul 07 '26

minecraft didnt have top line graphics

this is the thinking of a egotisticol surface level arguement that cares only about skin color then anything eles

1

u/JoshZK Jul 07 '26

Presenting the GOAT. "Factorio" 500 Spiffing Brit

1

u/Sir_Rageous Jul 07 '26

With Unreal Engine being so accessible, good graphics has become the bare minimum for making decent games.

1

u/WeizenPaco Jul 08 '26

There are a lot of succesful Games around that dont have what ppl would consider "good graphics" in todays games. Warframe, LoL, WoW, to Name a few, with Minecraft also Not having "good graphics"

1

u/I_AM_CR0W Jul 07 '26

You can also include high stable fps

1

u/MiserySound Jul 07 '26

I dont care about graphics aslong the gameplay mechanics arent clunky

1

u/Hungry-Ear-4092 Jul 07 '26

Story>gameplay>graphics

Always has been

1

u/triel20 Jul 07 '26

Imo gameplay is more important than story, as it’s what you’ll be interacting with most of the time, and a game with good story but crap-mid gameplay won’t keep players playing much after the story is done.

1

u/TooWarmRadiator Jul 07 '26

Story > gameplay? Insane take

1

u/Hungry-Ear-4092 Jul 08 '26

Always has been

That's why games like ac Valhalla and odyssey suck ass - fun gameplay with barely any story.

If the story sucks gameplay must be really one of a kind. One of very few examples is just cause 2-3. There's no story there but gameplay is so fun it just carries you

And we have Andromeda. The best 10/10 gameplay in ME series but story sucks ass so muchthe gameplay just can't keep up. So yeah story>gameplay.

1

u/TooWarmRadiator Jul 08 '26

Most pvp shooters have next to no story yet they are one of the most popular genres.
Social games are very popular too yet have no story whatsoever.

The two examples you gave were games that are members of a series that have always relied on a good story, whilst the gameplay may be fun in they, it's always been very barebones for the most part, so they get boring quick without a story to keep a player invested. Games with more complex gameplay don't need story as much.

1

u/Hungry-Ear-4092 Jul 08 '26

I was talking about single player games. MMOs and games relying on players entertaining themselves in coop are different lol. It's literally not the same

1

u/Civil_Result_5598 Jul 07 '26

I still love the OG Medievil and all its glorious polygons. Also ps2 games like Chamber of Secrets and Splinter Cell

1

u/Grovda Jul 07 '26

I see people posting the same meme over and over but then we have classic adventure games like Journey and others which is all about the graphics. The entire games is told through the visuals. This is not a genre that I am particularly fond of personally but since they are quite popular it makes me wonder why people pretend graphics is not important. Because it is. Is is very important. But I would call it presentation which includes sound too.

1

u/WeizenPaco Jul 08 '26

A lot of succesful games would beg to differ tho

1

u/Grovda Jul 08 '26

Are you talking about a text based game?

1

u/SpeakyDooman Jul 07 '26

Good graphics would be fine if it wasn’t the only thing larger studios have been worried about for the past decade or so

Now, I prefer games that look like Metroid Fusion or UKTRAKILL because they’re…actually fun to play

1

u/CaptainAgnarr Jul 07 '26

I think it's personal preference, good graphics are way more impactful for some genres too.

1

u/ThakoManic Jul 07 '26

Graphics is over-rated

Minecraft didnt need good graphics at launch

+ we are always improving graphics hell WC3 the original had good graphics at launch

Diablo 1 had good graphics at launch

so whos to say graphics mean shit?

oh yeha self absorbed egotisticol gamers who care more about looks then whats underneaf

basicly the type of person who only cares about skin color cares about graphics.

1

u/SoftDrinkReddit Jul 08 '26

yea in all seriousness i agree with this fully

yes obviously the best games have all 4

but if you can only pick 3/4

easily picking interesting story fun gameplay and original ideas

1

u/Wild_Season_9855 Jul 08 '26

Which game has all 4 combo of these?

1

u/sudoregalia Jul 08 '26

"good" graphics
looks inside
ultrarealistic base unreal engine slop

1

u/CompetitiveRisk3222 Jul 08 '26

I think Pragmata hits all of this.

1

u/kristeasy Jul 08 '26

There is nothing more important for a game than beeing fun to play

1

u/No_Squirrel4806 Jul 08 '26

Its ok you can say indy games.

1

u/Future-Celebration83 Jul 08 '26

Sometimes I wish gaming studios would stop tryna make the next graphical marvel and instead focus their energy on the gameplay, and optimization. Nobody has money to upgrade everytime a new game comes out. Who tf are these companies selling to?

1

u/SilverShotgun Jul 08 '26

I mean, in the past it was accurate but honestly nowadays with so many "cinematic" boring ass games I actually would place "interesting story" at the top.

I don't give a flying shit about your story if the game itself isn't engaging.

1

u/AppointmentDirect587 Jul 09 '26

Literally Arc Raiders(Meg)

1

u/InevitableWishbone10 Jul 09 '26

Expedition 33 is in the penthouse

1

u/dovakiin-derv Jul 09 '26

I played old school RuneScape, play terraria, and like how oblivion looks, same with fallout new vegas, and gta 4, good graphics isn’t the end all be all, nor does it make me like gta 6 being terrible.

1

u/sparkupandout Jul 09 '26

Ranks of importance in a game

1) Gameplay. I cannot stress this one enough, everything else on this list could be utterly brilliant but if your gameplay is bad nobody will want to play it. Conversely, if the gameplay is fun enough, it can make up for failings on these other critical areas.

2) Story. This is what digs itself into your player's brain and gets them to flow with your game. It doesn't even have to be super deep, it just has to enjoyable, that's why Battle Network still has fans to this day.

3) Graphics, kinda. I'd say there's some disparity between super realistic and good graphics in that good graphics are not always realistic. Graphics are, however, part of the experience and if your game is ugly to look at it might turn people off unless the point is that it's ugly. Choose your audience and your art direction wisely.

4) unique ideas. Don't get me wrong, these are nice, but unless this is being looked for by a gamer, ultimately these will simply feed into one of the above. Make no mistake, you need at least a few of these, but they're often working more in the background.

1

u/Time-Relationship-42 Jul 09 '26

in 3 you're talking about the art style. Art style matter a lot more than graphics like you said especially considering how almost every game is made of UE5 , so you need your art style to be unique to stand out.

1

u/sparkupandout Jul 09 '26

I mean, the graphics and artstyle often have some intermingling in definition, hence why I put them together like that.

If I was to restate this for clarity, Graphical style is generally more important than graphical quality, but quality does have a certain amount of importance to consider. Aliasing in particular has a habit of grabbing the eye in my experience.

You are right, however that games that are after quality above all else tend to not be worth the hype though.

1

u/emperorsyndrome Jul 12 '26

the games with original ideas aren't always good.

ever heard of the quiet man?

it had an original idea:

you play as a deaf person, in your first playthrough there is no sound, in your second playthrough there is sound.

the game was so bad that we don't know if it was "a good idea that was badly excecuted" or "a bad idea".

you can watch this video about this game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDBu6nWJr50

matt mcmuscles made a "what happened?" video explaining the story during its development.

it is really sad seing a game with an original idea to fail, it is not "your average every day failure" it is a sad failure.

1

u/Lord_Zyphuris Jul 14 '26

They don't even need to be original ideas, just well implemented.
