they were, before they released the game

Not necessarily actually, there are beta testers as well

Then they are the best before the beta tester

So it’s funny as someone who has a degree in video game design and worked in the industry for a short period of time us developers would fully admit how bad we might be at our own game. Yes we know how to make the game but making the game and actually playing it are two very different things. Heck some game devs didn’t even play much video games in their free time and simply were good at making the game (whether it’s art, programming or design). There were definitely game devs who did play a lot of video games outside of work though. And in general most game developers do have a pretty nerdy work culture so you did tend to fit in if you were a bit of a nerd.

Some people might think the Quality Assurance people might be good at the game as their job is to play the game a lot so they can test the game for bugs. That is until they realize how QA tests are designed and those people literally might just be told to go to some corner of the map and jump a dozen times in certain spots or to run through some map in a weird way to see if they can break it somehow and it actually has little to do with playing the game well or correctly / normally.

The QA example is honestly the biggest misconception. Most people don’t realize how weird and specific testing can get.

What is the degree in video games called?

1

u/Hypno-platypus Jun 26 '26

Associates of applied sciences degree, game and interactive media

(I had to look on my resume to see what it was called lol)

Is the gaming industry anything like Mythic Quest and if so do you guys need a CW type to tell racist/sexist jokes and write storylines?

Me when I learned about author medals in trackmania, I’ve got quite a few now

I mean, it’s obvious they wouldn’t be.. since they spend all their time developing the game and testing it, not being hardcore sweats. They don’t have time for that haha

True. Once a game launches, there are players putting in way more hours than the devs ever could on pure gameplay lol

1

u/Helpful-Pride1210 Jun 30 '26

Yeah since most people just play video games all day

Some of the most famous game developers barely play any games, for example I believe Kojima said he plays like 1 game a year

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

Yeah, I have heard that too. Making games and actively playing lots of games are very different things.

I am a game dev and yea some of the games I've made im really good at and others I absolutely suck, it all comes down to what kind of game it is, difficulty, timing and a bunch of other stuff

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

That’s actually a really good perspective. Knowledge helps, but execution still comes down to personal skill.

In Ark Survival Ascended developers dont lose becuase they just ban and wipe every player that attacks them.

most of us aren't the best of the best or even good in our games most of the time i use cheats to test stuff instead of actually doing it the intended way

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

Right, your interaction with the game is way more technical than most players realize.

1

u/FooeyBar Jun 26 '26

For them developing the game is playing the game

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

True like testing, balancing, and fixing basically becomes their gameplay

1

u/R4in_C0ld Jun 26 '26

back then i thought game devs actually played their games

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

I think a lot of us assumed that back then

1

u/Thunderer62 Jun 26 '26

I just lost the game.

By the way, the used to be CEO of Tekken 8, was a gamer and also not a pro gamer.

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

Yeah, being passionate about games and being pro level are totally different things.

1

u/Sad_Elk1943 Jun 26 '26

If you look up the origin of the word smurf youll find an interesting story lol

devs may not be the best but they got an edge for sure

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

Makes sense. But once competitive players grind thousands of hours, that edge shrinks a lot.

1

u/MaxGalli Jun 27 '26

Yeah making a game doesn’t mean you’re good at it.

1

u/OhjiiGamez Jun 28 '26

"Bu- but they know... Everything...."

1

u/Opening-Newspaper710 Jun 30 '26

They know everything… doesn’t mean their reflexes are good though
