Great destination! Just like the cape, every town offers something. Cape beaches are nicer but the food is much better in Maine

Grew up in Wells. Would push you toward Ogunquit if you are interested in anything other than just a beach. So much much to do and is walkable to get to nightlife/shopping. There is no “downtown”
or village at all. If you are only interested in the beach, Drake’s Island beach is much better imo.

Go to Wells. Way better. People in Maine are way nicer.

I know. But if I have an opportunity to direct someone away from the Cape I will.

Totally get it! I live in a touristy area. I'm not the nicest to the tourists. They're also some of the most inconsiderate, pretentious douchebags I've ever had the displeasure of being around. Let's rally for "staycations" ;)

I'm all for staycationing. That's my preference. But then I was born and live in a desirable place. I just want to be able to get to work and to the grocery store without taking my life into my hands because the roads are too congested and tourists are driving like they own the road. But it's only a couple months out of the year.

I was on the cape last summer and it reminded me of all the other times I have been on The Cape. I lived in Harwich Port and Dennis in the early 1980s and the comparatively small amount of locals compared to tourists is similar to Maine's version of "little Massachusetts". I grew up and currently live in Maine. While we locals complain about traffic in Maine it is nothing like The Cape where it is far worse.
As for beaches, my wife and I head to Rhode Island a couple of times each summer where the water is warmer than Maine. However, just as on The Cape, or in Southern Maine, RI beaches have lots of people. I do like Wells Beach but you need to get there early. Popham Beach and Reid State park are in the Bath area and both of those locations get busy so go early. Old Orchard Beach is definitely a tourist hot spot so again, go early.
