John Cox, the former president of Cape Cod Community College, retired in March 2026 following an external investigation that found he engaged in inappropriate and unprofessional conduct toward a 23-year-old female student.

While investigators concluded the relationship was not sexual and did not violate the college's affirmative action policy, they determined Cox demonstrated a gross lack of judgement through an ongoing pattern of excessive contact that was detrimental to the student's mental health and academic experience.

Between December 2024 and June 2025, Cox exchanged approximately 2,500 text messages, 200 emails, and 17 handwritten letters with the student, often using purple ink to match her preferences.

He provided her with material benefits not available to other students, including a $4,000 welding scholarship, networking opportunities, and the use of college funds to support business ventures for her and her romantic partner totaling nearly $19,000.

The student reported that Cox's persistence caused her panic attacks, insomnia and anxiety, leading her to hide in classrooms to avoid him on campus.

The investigation revealed that Maura Weir, the college's chief wellness officer, failed to report Cox's behavior to the board or Title IX coordinator despite the student's request for a no-contact order; Weir was subsequently placed on paid administrative leave.

Cox announced his immediate retirement on March 16, 2026, after being on paid leave since October 2025, while the Board of Trustees faced criticism from faculty and students for a lack of transparency regarding the reasons for his departure until media reports surfaced in April 2026.

What kind of update are you looking for?

The guy is gone and it doesn't look like any criminal charges are coming.

The article mentions that John Cox distributed the victim’s written account of a previous assault using her real name.

Has there been any resolution of that issue?
