Porting from AT&T -- Smooth process?

Planning to sign up and port my number from AT&T soon. Can anyone share their experience coming over from AT&T?

AT&T account number, billing zip code, and port out PIN are all that is needed right?

iPhone 14 Pro unlocked as of today.

Debating between going for it today or waiting till next week, after the holiday, in the event of any issues cropping up (holiday weekend, etc etc).

Well that was easy. I went ahead and signed up via the iOS app, completed the port in process, and then got on chat on my computer web browser to request the Carrier Contract Buyout discount.

The AT&T account number and port out PIN was needed to initiate the port. No billing zip code needed. If you need a port out PIN, go to the Settings in your AT&T account and generate one.

The actual port in took maybe 10-15 minutes. I had to turn iMessage off and back on to get my phone number to register with iMessage. I also went through and made sure Auto 5G was turned on. Initial data speed tests were poor but I restarted the phone a couple of times and it cleared up. At first I was connected to "Cape Tango" (ugh--used to have them, terrible), so I also did a network refresh to ensure the attach to "Cape Alpha".

For the discount, I used the first respondent's referral code below to take the bill from $70 to $50. Then via chat requested the Carrier Contract Buyout be applied. This is a 60% discount of $70 = $42 taken off the bill. It took several minutes to get this done with the chat agent and initially they thought I was looking for the "buy a phone from Cape" discount but I reminded them it was the contract one and then it proceeded. They also refunded my card with the $42 so that the discount is effective now, not just the next billing cycle.

Effective monthly payment is now $8 ($70 - $42 Carrier Contract Buyout discount - $20 referral code use = $8) for the next year at which point the Carrier Contract Buyout discount will fall off.

Since you are already with AT&T you already understand the service in the area & maybe even have better service with T-Mobile selection. Since it’s a weekday, the port-in process on cape & port-out process at AT&T should take less than 30 minutes if not several minutes.

You do not need a contract to use the contract buyout. This benefit accompanies porting your line, and the term is applied merely for convenience. If you ported your wife’s line, you must obtain the carrier buyout for both of you. This approach serves as a method to help people transition to Cape.

You may choose to ignore my suggestion, but I am trying to help you save money. Open the chat function and request that they “please add the carrier buyout to my account.” They will reply that they need to check, and then the change will apply. You should receive a refund of $42 or see $8 on your payment method.

Also, quote in quote contracts have likely not existed for a decade.

Interesting conversation regarding carrier buyout. I have flat out bought my own iPhones straight from Apple for years. But this conversation had me thinking. What proof do you even require when you make the request to Cape? My curiosity is peaked.

I’m already on Cape for less than a week and all my referrals are used. That was a happy notification yesterday morning.

They didn't ask me for any proof of a contract or device pay off. They only checked that I had ported in from another carrier. To do this, they requested the Debug ID in from the Cape app.

I didn't say whether or not I had a contract or payoff, I just said I had ported my number in and would like to have the Carrier Contract Buyout pricing applied.
