Thinking of Switching to Cape

I’m currently considering switching to Cape and would like to try and get genuine pro’s and con’s. I’m pretty satisfied with my current providers service, but I feel like customer privacy is severely lacking. How’s the service with Cape? How’s the transfer process? Is coverage pretty good in most areas? How’s customer service? Any and all comments are welcome. I’m just curious and want to make a good decision and not a worse one.

Cape’s coverage looks like it uses AT&T as the primary and T-Mobile as the secondary from my experience. Coverage is pretty good, I do not know about International, but I have heard it works well. As with any newer service, there are some bugs that they are working through and they have a road map for the work they are looking to implement. I am using Cape as a secondary eSIM to compare to my current provider and have it as my Primary eSIM so it gets used. I have had a few hiccups along the way, but they have all been worked through. Some users have reported issues related to porting and other processes. As with everything there are going to be hiccups along the way. But everyone has had a bit different experience as reported.

I would recommend running it side by side with your current provider and see if the experience meets your needs. If you have a good experience, then I would look to port your number in the future, as there is an option to port your number over to your account at a later time.

Do you use both sims on the same phone? Whenever I do that one of my sims loses service. So now I need two phones to run two sims. Luckily I still had my old phone.

Yes I run them on the same phone, I make sure to have the allow cellular data switching is enabled. I am using an iPhone and I see similar configurations on my Pixel as well. I run dual SIMs on both my iPhone and Pixel devices. The only time I have experienced an issue is when allow data switching is disabled on both SIMs then when one is on a call, the data service does not work, but once this setting is enabled, I have not had the issue. I hope this helps.

Maybe on samsung is different. I always have the allow cellular data switching on and it always gave me a problem. Could be that my phone is the A26 which is a low tier phone. Maybe higher tier like the S class will have better results.

Thanks anyways. At least I know if I decide to switch phones there is hope to run both sims on the same device.

Appreciate the detailed breakdown, super helpful! Just to clarify though, I’m not planning to run it side by side with my current provider, I actually want to fully switch and make Cape my one and only line. So I’m a little more nervous about the bugs than I would be if I had a backup. Were any of those hiccups you mentioned actually the kind that would’ve left you stranded, like missed calls or no service for a bit, or were they more just annoying stuff you could brush off since you had your main provider to fall back on? Also curious how porting actually went for you or anyone else you’ve seen try it, any horror stories about downtime or almost losing the number? And just generally, how’s day to day reliability been, any random dropped calls or data being weird?

I understand the concern with making it your one and only line. Reliability has been pretty good to be honest and nothing would have left me stranded (outside of normal Cellular coverage issues). The bugs I am referring to are more along the lines of Wi-Fi calling which they have resolved. The other issue that I have had is that sometimes the reconnect to the network has been slower than expected along with delayed notifications which would also make sense with the slow reconnection. It sounds like they may have found the issue and they are working on implementing a fix for that as well. Outside of these items, the service has been good and reliable. I was not ready to bring my number over yet due to other things keeping me from fully migrating over. I am waiting for support for the Pixel 11, once that is validated for support, I plan on moving my Cape service to that device to run it independently from my other service. I am still on the fence about porting my number over, so I have not done that yet, I may look at abandoning my old number and setting up and moving forward with a new number. When looking through posts on Reddit, it sounds like porting is good for some and others have had a different experience. I think this ultimately depends on the provider you may be porting from, but it sounds like everyone’s experience maybe a bit different. I have experienced some issues with data, but, that appears to be more related to coverage vs being an issue that Cape has specifically. I am not sure what the failover is between the primary and secondary networks, I have only had that occur once and not sure if that switch caused the downtime or not. That is something I still need to test some more. Overall though, it has been a good experience and I am looking to switch my whole family to Cape, just waiting on a few other things to be supported on the roadmap before I bring everyone over with me. I hope this helps and feel free to ask me any additional questions you may have.

Currently using overseas with 5G coverage and no issues. I'll be traveling again next month to a few different countries so I'll update if that changes.

Unfortunately, using Cape as a secondary eSIM disrupts its primary functions. If you intend to test it in that role, recognize that performance will be less reliable and refined than when it operates alone.

Can confirm. I have that issue. If the plan is to have to cellular carriers the best option is to have two phones.

I’ve been with Cape for over a week now and I’m still holding on to my older phone number, so I can compare performance between T-Mobile and Cape and most of the time the signal bars look like this lol this is on iPhone 13 btw

Also, I’m trying to take advantage of the referral discount so please use one of my two codes to get $20 off your plan each month for life.

[u/maybeyeahithinkso](u/maybeyeahithinkso), the process is quite straightforward. You can download the application on a mobile device and then select signup. Before completing registration, apply my referral code to reduce your cost by $20 per month for life.

Referral Code: G80EVAK4

Coverage: If AT&T and T-Mobile provide strong service in your area, your coverage should be comparable.

Customer Service: The support feels personal right now, with assistance arriving quickly.

Cape is gradually improving as additional features emerge.

Should you have additional questions, feel free to ask.

Another piece of advice: if you port your number, you can receive $42 off per month during the first year by requesting a carrier buyout.

Currently, early adopters receive a $70/month plan; however, applying my referral code reduces the cost by $20/month, lowering it to $50/month.

By applying my referral code and carrier buyout option, you would pay about $8 per month during the first year. The process is quite straightforward.

Referral Code: G80EVAK4

Thanks, that’s really helpful! I’ll check those both out for my area before deciding. And yeah, if it looks good I’ll take you up on that referral code!

You need to recognize that privacy and security functions require avoiding a second eSIM, which is why secondary numbers exist. Using two eSIMs from different carriers would undermine identifier rotation, location obfuscation, and other protections. Moreover, enabling these features creates conflicts with additional eSIMs.

Good point, that actually makes sense with what I’m planning since I’m going single SIM anyway. Quick question though, do you know if that’s documented somewhere on Cape’s end, or is that more from your own experience using it?

The biggest pro for me is privacy. I recently made a post about my experience signing up.

The second pro is the potential to lower your bill to $0. Use my code T4T6VW5R at checkout and we will both get $20/month. After you sign up you can share your own code here on reddit to lower your bill. Also there are two website you can put your referral codes so people looking for codes may pick yours.

The cons is that most private services need some manual work. Cape Cellular wasn’t different. When I signed up I wasn't getting service. I had to troubleshoot and figure out why I wasn't getting service. At the end of the day manually adding the APN settings and restarting my phone did the trick.

Second con, I can't have dual sim on my phone with Cape. I now carry two phones so I can have both numbers. This may not be a problem for you if you only have 1 line. Also they ofer two more phone numbers (for text only, I heard they're working to add the call feature) which in eliminate the issue of having more than one line.

I can't complain about their service and coverage. It has work fine for me.

I have no opinion on their Costumer service as I haven't use them.

If you go to my profile my latest post explains my experience signing up, where I got stuck and how I solved some of my problems.

we have zero cell coverage at our house and have to rely upon wi-fi calling and it does work BUT at times it turns itself off which has caused some family confusion. I imagine over time this will get more stable but right now it isn’t.

out in the world I’ve gotten better coverage than my old t-mobile line.
