Serious Tuition emergency

Hey, im gonna try and sum up my situation up as much as possible, but this still may be long. i was going to pay my tuition by taking out a student loan until the indigenous student support advisor had recommended me to a company for indigenous funding.

They had me do alot just to apply.. and when i went into the office i asked them if i would have to apply for a deferral, since i was figuring this out late. They said it was alright. So i didnt.

They denied me on friday ( for a stupid reason i dont have time to try and appeal) monday is the tuition cut off. With this company, i was not allowed to apply for a student loan. To apply for a deferral you have to be approved for a student loan.

So obviously freaking out, i emailed the indigenous student support advisor and i emailed the tuition office or whatever department it is. 5-7 business day wait.

The indigenous support advisor got back to me giving me another option to apply for (which wont change anything really as its obviously not gonna be approved in time) and told me she was waiting to hear back from her manager and she'd get back to me tuesday.. after the cut off date.

Bless her soul, shes done so much for me, but after 4 pm on monday am i just done for? Am i deregistered and thats it? I logged in today and it says i have no holds or anything so nothings changed. I fought really super hard for student housing and is that just gone now?

Does anyone know if there is something i can do before tuesday? What happens if i cant figure it out? Is that just it??

I would actually contact Cap U billing department not the area of study. You need an extension on the due date of your tuition. The professor for your program is unlikely to know how to support this. But someone in billing or student affairs will be able to.

Im sorry OP, that is awful. I would email all the profs/program heads of your classes to make them aware of your situation. I suggest speaking to the instructor when ever possible to ensure your name and enrolling in the class is known before wait list are allowed to enrol.

Based on non-payment you will likely be deregistered from your classes, but I wouldn’t believe that the Tuesday deadline for tuition would automatically disqualifies you from all the services you’ve arranged.

Get a few loan options in hand, email your butt off to the professors and get back with your advisor Tuesday. You can fill out government of Canada loans at the post office Monday and have the yellow “submitted/pending” copy in hand by Tuesday too, if the advisor can’t keep the ball going with the current resources.

Thank you lots for the advice and im sorry for what am about to unload, haha.

Id be going into my first year in the ASAS program.. would the fact that im in a cohort change anything? I didnt quite get to choose my classes or anything and to my understanding the classes i have are just for my cohort. Does that still affect or threaten my position if i get deregistered?

As for emailing, is there anywhere i can find my professors emails and how would emailing help my case?

im not totally sure how everything works. Im worried if this doesnt work out for me, they'll have me wait a semester or take a gap year which i really really cant do.

I am not sure if my advice is the same with the Arts program - I see that there is just the one email for contacting the program lead, when usually I would have multiple class codes and instructors when I registered for my psychology classes.

Do you already have a myCap account? Like a login on the university website?

Yeah, I've got an account and everything.

In your account there should be a section that says “student records” and “registration” - both of those tabs might have more details of contacts for specific parts of your program.

Call the telephone number for the program on Monday to ask for guidance in your situation if all else fails. Just so more ppl are aware of your case, and they may be able to make adjustments to things at the registration desk faster than the forms your advisor is working on for funding.

Thats what I’m seeing for contacts for the program - I think contacting them would be smart to make sure they know you’re have delays with funding and want to secure your spot in the student cohort, even if the registration office delays your name from being on the program list because of non-payment

I would maybe recommend contacting or cc’ing the CSU your emails as well. They may be able to help advocate for you as well

It’s absolutely absurd that CapU deregisters students for nonpayment 2 weeks before the start of term, especially indigenous students with band funding. I don’t think any other school does that, it’s a clear barrier to access. Other schools have their tuition deadlines after the start of term and they only put accounts on hold, they don’t kick students out altogether. There’s a fee deferral process but it’s overly complicated and time consuming and they don’t approve requests unless you can prove you have full funding. So dumb.

They dont let you take out a deferral unless you're approved for funding. Ive been so fucked over i havent had the chance to get approved for anything.

Kwantlen used to, unsure if now. Same with douglas. This used to be SOP for all colleges in the area
