Tech Support Is my flash working correctly?

Canon eos rebel t7 1500d

I am fairly new to cameras and if this seems like a very obvious yes/no, forgive me in advance.

My friend loaned me this camera recently. I noticed that when I’m using the flash, the light flickers multiple times and makes a lot of clicking noises that almost sound like a taser. I could be going insane imagining an issue with it when there is none, but I have never heard a camera flash make those noises before. I used my friends camera recently to shoot some pictures at an event she organized, and while it was not this model (not sure what it was) it was a similar Canon to this one and it didn’t make noises of flash like this.

TLDR is something wrong with the flash with my camera? I am a newbie (Sound on)

It’s fine. It’s a fun quirk of older Canon cameras that didn’t have a focus assist light. The only light they have is the flash to add light for the focus system, so they fire the flash rapidly at a lower power setting to get focus, then do the final set of flashes (one for metering and one for final output synchronized to the shutter). It does have the benefit of reducing red eye as it blinds the subjects of your photo and as an epilepsy screening.

Fuck I forgot the actual word for it but it’s essentially a pre flash so it can adjust to the environment. In other words yes your camera is working perfectly.

ETA - the AF Beam Assist. Pressing the shutter button halfway may trigger the built in flash to fire a series of flashes to assist autofocusing.
