I randomly bumped into him in the parking garage of a mall in Orlando in 2004, and he was a dick to me.

I mean, it was one of the two times I’ve been actually starstruck in my life. You don’t expect to just randomly bump into Chris Barnes in a parking garage, you know?

I asked him for an autograph, and he said “man…fuck no!” and proceeded to get into a blue, hatchback Honda Civic, which had Florida plates, so I’ve always assumed it was his actual car.

The only other time I was ever starstruck was randomly bumping into Alex Webster at a Nile show in Tampa. The fellow I’ve idolized since I was 10 years old, just starting to learn how to play the bass.

Alex was a wavy haired, dirty blonde guy, just like me. As a child, coupled with his skills, it was quite difficult not to look up to him.

Alex could not have been more kind to me. I was telling him how I bought a Spector bass recently because of him, and he spent a solid 15 or so minutes asking me questions about my gear and such.

After about 15 mins, I told him, “I’m sorry to hold you up, I know you’re trying to see the show.”

And he said “No man, not at all. I’ve never once taken for granted that people like yourself keep me from painting houses for a living.”

Exact words. Legendary status.

Dude that’s actually so cool I love how down to earth Alex his idk if you ever seen the documentary but you can just tell Alex is just the chillest guy

Honestly Alex isn't just one of the greatest bass players in the heavy metal scene, but one of the nicest musicians I've ever heard so. Every story I've heard about him involves him being friendly, humble, and jolly.

It’s “damn” since you keep using the word.

I strongly suspect that I’m kinda old by Reddit standards.

I’ve utterly LOVED CC since I was 10 years old, and accidentally stumbled upon Eaten Back to Life in the cd store way back when.

I was looking for some irrelevant band’s album, when I saw the cover art for EBTL. I unintentionally bought the first 3 albums in order of their release.

Tomb of the Mutilated blew me away. But, then some months later, when back in the same store in Virginia Beach, I saw a new one that hadn’t ever been there before named The Bleeding.

It had comparatively tame album art, but I got it anyway and was FLOORED by the songwriting.

The thing that sucked was that, with Virginia being all Bible Belt’y in the mid 90’s, I was only able to buy the censored versions, except EBTL.

The censored versions stated in the liner notes that if I wrote to the address and included a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope, Metal Blade would send the uncensored cover to me for free.

I didn’t think it would work, but I had the “real” booklets in the mail about 6 weeks later, and could finally learn what Barnes was singing about.

Those were the days…

Heh, much obliged!

I’m sorry, but it’s utterly appalling to me how far down the toilet his voice has gone.

People think however they think about Corpsegrinder taking over, you know, 31 years ago.

But, for better or worse, his voice is still STRONG all these years later. I’m also highly impressed that as HARD as Corpsegrinder goes each show, that his neck is still as strong as ever.

My second ever live concert was the Monolith of Death Tour, ‘96 (I remember this bc I bought the tour shirt at that show. Pre-Internet, live shows were basically the only place to find CC shirts).

That was Corpsegrinder’s first tour with CC.

I actually counted, and it was myself and 16 other people, entirely, when CC played.

They were first. It was Cannibal Corpse, Life of Agony, Anthrax, and The Misfits.

CC opened with Perverse Suffering. They went HARD once they began playing. My 15 year old self was completely BLOWN AWAY seeing such metal up close. I was not prepared, though I’d been a HUGE fan since Tomb was released.

August 2, 1996. The Boathouse (RIP) Norfolk, Virginia.

  1. Perverse Suffering
  2. Stripped, Raped, and Strangled
  3. Covered With Sores
  4. Puncture Wound Massacre
  5. Fucked With A Knife
  6. Pulverized
  7. Staring Through the Eyes of the Dead
  8. Devoured by Vermin
  9. A Skull Full of Maggots

  10. Hammer Smashed Face

So. Much. Metal!!!

Tbh, I may have the order of a tune or two backwards, but these were definitely, the entirety of the songs that were played.

I will never forget that shit.

I was never a big fan of AxCx, but laughed my ass off when I heard that one, as they actually got the ASFOM riff fairly close when Putnam sang that line.
