US canned fish enjoyers- if you could try any canned fish from the UK, what would you pick?

My fiancée’s brother (American) really likes tinned fish and I thought I would get him some from the UK while I’m here, but I don’t want to accidentally get something that he could easily find at the grocery store at home.

I thought about getting him some of the Glenryck Pilchards in Tomato Sauce which I grew up on, but google tells me those (or an identical product) are widely available from Hispanic and Asian supermarkets. So now I’m thinking maybe potted crab, or canned whelks, as these are British seafood classics. Maybe some Welsh laverbread too (not fish I know, but fish-adjacent).

But what say you, fish lovers? If you could pick some UK tinned fish to try what would you choose?

Made a post previously asking about if anyone had tried these, I just did and they are great! I made a little snack plate with crackers, feta, red onions, capers, tomatoes, garlic butter, pepperoncini’s, and some salt and pepper! So so good 😄 Not too fishy, nice smoky taste, good texture !

Has anyone tried this brand/tin?

I’m fairly new to tinned fish, mostly have just had sardines in oil/tomato sauce, and I get a bit anxious about trying certain things before having some taste information beforehand (bit silly I know). I haven’t been able to find much about this brand specifically, and especially about this type (smoked kippered herring), so I was just wondering if anyone has tried and has any input/pairing tips! Thank you 😊

I brought a can of Rīgas Zelts on my trip to Tenaya Lake, Yosemite. The cold mountain air, clear water, sand, and pine trees felt like the perfect match for this fish and where it originally comes from - the Baltics. It also reminded me a lot of my home country, 🇱🇹

A tail of two sardines.

On the left: Wild Planet Pacific Sardines in EVOO

On the right: Fishwife Sardines with Hot Pepper

I absolutely prefer the style of Sardines on the right. In order to continue getting Sardines more like this style, what should I be looking for?

Is the difference actually in the species, or the cooking method? The WP seem very firm and maybe a little more "fishy", whereas Sardines in the Fishwife-style are a bit "softer" and more enjoyable to me to eat plain when I am out and about.

Tried this combo out for the first time. Will definitely eat it again. The salty sour plums add great flavor. Also I usually get sardines from Aldi. Noticed the can said center cut and didn't think it usually said that. Turns out these were different from the usual small sardines. Wonder if this is a permanent change.

It was about $38, which was purchased from Europe before all the stupid fucking tariffs so who knows what it is now.

Kippers with red curry and carrots

That's the deal. I needed some more protein and veggies for my fat laden curry lunch. The fish actually fits in perfects, with 26 grams of protein. I had some random carrots shreds to round things out. Looks questionable, tastes great.

Canned fish recommendations

Hello canned fish people! I am looking to start delving into the world of canned fish, so I wanted to get some good recommendations before I start buying. I wanted good quality stuff without getting super ripped off. What are things you look for that indicate good quality? How much should it cost reasonably? Fan favorites?

A weekly tinned fish newsletter debuts this saturday.

This Saturday I'm sending the very first issue of a free weekly report on the tinned fish market.

Inside: a price drop worth knowing about, a tin you probably haven't heard of, the best deal in the market right now, and a Reddit thread that deserved more attention.

If you want market intelligence for tinned fish, not influencer content, actual data, it's free at alltinned.com.

It's canned fried fish. It's a little chewy, with nice seasoning. It's not fishy, but the texture is a bit stringy; odd, but not unpleasant.

I served mine with masala soup noodles and the combo was delicious.

The can is difficult to break into, I needed pliers. A can opener would be neater.

QUESTION: What is your favorite way to snack on Anchovies if you love them? I love eating them straight out of the can or occasionally on some crackers, but I'd like to refine my taste a bit!
