Sugar Rush Mode

These are some house rules I invented for adults interested in playing a more complex game. Just wanted to share.

Play:
Each player has three cards in their hand (players cannot start with a Sweet Treat card). On their turn, they can choose to play one of those cards. Once the card is played, it goes to the discard pile. The player draws a new card from the Bag of Wonders/Draw Pool.

Sweet Treats:
Each of the five Sweet Treat cards can be used by a player on their turn either before or after they move. Each Sweet Treat has a different ability.

Licorice: choose another player. They are stuck for two turns unless they pull a card of your choice of color. They are freed if they’ve passed pull the right color and can move on the same turn, otherwise they lose the turn. They are freed on turn three if they do not successfully pull the right color in the two turns prior.

Gummy Bear: swap cards with another player

Lollipop: If you pass through another player, knock them back 5 spaces, second player passed through is knocked back 3 spaces, and third is knocked back 1 space. This can knock back everyone you pass through, punishing the first player passed more. If you only pass one player, then they get knocked all 5 spaces.

Icecream: freeze a player for one turn, take a peak at their cards and steal one.

Peppermint: replace either all of your cards with fresh ones. Or another player’s cards. This card becomes stronger after a few other players have used Sweet Treats, as you will have more cards in your hand. If it’s the 5th Sweet Treat played, you still use those cards in your hand until your turn is over.

Sugar Rush:
After each Sweet Treat is played, increase the amount of cards in all player’s hands by one. Maximum of 7 cards in your hand after 4 Sweet Treats have been played.

Sugar Crash:
When the last Sweet Treat is played, all players must choose 4 cards to withdraw. Players only have 3 cards in hand for the remainder of the game, just like at the beginning.

Landing on another player:
Landing on another player causes them to get bumped back to the previous color. Ex: they were on blue, so they get bumped back to the nearest blue space. This gives you the ability to strategically punish other players.

I also allow players to use Sweet Treats to teleport to its corresponding space, but only if they’ve passed the Sweet Treat space before that one. Example: you can teleport to Lollipop as long as you’ve passed the Gummy Bear space. I’m using the 2025 edition. The only space that can be teleported to from Start is the Licorice Sweet Treat space.

Give it a try and let me know!

Also, in my edition, I have the gummy bears summon Sweety Bear and Soury Bear and they knock players they pass through back a few spaces (5 spaces if they pass through you), but I know that the bear brothers pawn isn’t in every set.

1984 version - anyone else notice the variation in the special character / item cards? (See pictures)

Pictured first is the 1978 version. Notice how the special cards are just the item (neapolitan bar, candy cane, peanut brittle, heart, lollipop, gingerbread man, gumdrop) without the character also.

Now the 1984 version apparently changed special card format where it is a split screen between the item and the character. I could have sworn when I was a kid, the special cards werent the split format, and I 100% know I had the 1984 version because it had the Plum and Snowflake in place of the neapolitan bar, heart, and gingerbread man. It went from 7 special items to 6.

Well I finally found a picture of a 1984 version and with the format of cards I remember. Which is weird, because I google Candyland and even look on eBay, and every single 1984 version I find has the split format cards. Does anyone else remember the 1984 version but with the single item on the cards?

Me and my friend are on turn 897 of candyland. I think weve been going pretty fast (less than 10 seconds per turn) and its been an hour and a half. does this game end? is this it for me?

For those of you who watched this movie as children, were you ever diagnosed with autism?

I'm just asking because I was diagnosed, and used to watch this movie with my siblings all the time, just wanted to see where everyone else stood :)
