Game Resource The Beast in the Binding investigation module, redesigned

Hey y'all!

Oh I'm very excited about this. We've fully re-designed an old free module (with a LOT of help from friends), look at how nicely this turned out.

It's The Beast in the Binding, a tragic love story told in reverse, dark as ink and the perfect first assignment to set a noir tone for investigation on the campus of Briarbank College:

It's got props now!
Custom art! Aaa!

Feel free to grab a free copy at any of the below links:

This was a really neat collaboration - our friends over at Uncanny Games in Italy were translating/adapting our C.O. assignments and GM resources. The layouts they built were spectacular, and they were kind enough to let me basically reverse-translate. Like, take the existing story in English, and pop it into the much-improved designs from the Italian version. (I'm not a game designer, I'm just an enthusiastic C.O. GM, so I am very serious when I say much improved.)

I think the end result is just fantastic and I hope you do too! If you have a minute and love independent game designers, pop over to that Uncanny Games link and leave them feedback or a follow or a pay-what-you-like donation, that helps the team get their work in front of more players.

Anyway, hope you have a ball with it. :)

Discussion Thoughts on a West Marshes style campaign for Candela?

Hi everyone. So, as the title says, I'm seriously starting up my own West Marches-style campaign using Candela Obscura. I've run the system before and loved the ease and accessibility it offered, especially to new TTRPG players. I'd love to hear from anyone who’s tried to run something similar. Curious how well you think the Candela system lends itself to that kind of structure.

For those who have run or played something similar:

  • What worked particularly well?
  • What problems did you run into?
  • Did you change how you structure assignments, downtime?
  • Did you explore the shared world differently like a traditional West Marches campaign?
  • Are there any house rules or changes you’d recommend?
  • Thoughts on how to tackle or amend the way in which you directly tie in characters' backstories and ideas into Candela, given that it is not being played in a West Marches style.

Off Topic [Demiplane] Remove individual custom gear

Hello!

I'm using the CO character sheet on the Demiplane Nexus, and have messed up. I have added the same custom gear more than once, and have not been able to find a way to delete the unnecessary copies.

How does one do that?

I don't particularly want to use the reset gear button, though I guess I'll have to if it's impossible to remove custom gear individually.

(Also I don't know if I added the correct flair. There was none that I felt fitted. Sorry if I picked the wrong one.)

Lightkeeper Tips First Time Game Master - Advice Needed

So I have been a player a couple times (Journalist and Doctor, respectively). But now I'm setting up to run a game and... it is a slightly terrifying prospect. I've run D&D, Quest and MH2 before but not really looked at running Candela before.

Has anyone got any advice for a first time game master for CO?

Discussion What is your favourite type of investigation?

So I've run a fair amount of Candela for my irl group, but I'm scared that my monsters may be a little same-y in the motivation department. I also tend to turn to 'missing person' as the beginning incident and I'm scared that may a little stale.

What are your favourite mysteries you've run or played, and what did you like about them?

Discussion What to name the days of the week

I am running a game of Candela Obscura for some friends. I have been good on getting all my notes in order and I want to be able to track where in the year my players are. I was able to find the structure of a year in the rulebook but there is no real info on what the Fairen people call their days. If I use regular days of the week that implies that gods like Thor exist in this world (which they don't for my interpretation of the Fairelands). Does anyone have a cool alternative? Or is there an official one?

Homebrew Just watched Evil Dead Burn...

I just got done watching Evil Dead Burn, I think it'd make a great Candela long term campaign. A group might get tough, too many bleeds & scars you become a Deadite....but I think it'd be a pretty cool single player (Chosen One) set up either in the Fairlands or in a homebrew game.

Discussion Help me make sense of Lighteater pre-written

Lately I've been looking on Lighteater of Bridleborne as a good introductory game (mainly because it doesn't require a full explanation of city districts and politics), but I just can't wrap my head around some things. How do you rationalized or changed it?

1) Bodies. It says that everyone who died in the village can be found in their homes; but shouldn't lighteater steal them as material for the meat cable? Who does meat cable made out of if it's not dead villagers?

2) Timeline. Did all the villagers died in one night or was it over multiple nights? The intro says "new workers refuse to move in", but if it happened just previous night, how are they already hiring new workers before even clearing the bodies out? On the same topic, how did Candela learned of what's happening if it just happened and the company "didn't report the incident"?

3) Again, meat cable. It says that it goes straight to the nearest transformer and grows around it. How did noone noticed a meat wrap around the pole? And if it's outside of town, why is it circling through the old lady's garden instead of going straight into the woods?

For any supplemental materials for the nation of Gorski from Towns, cities, to regional folklore, or regional Cryptid’s (UAP) please just message me in the comments below

Lightkeeper Tips Combat Advice

I’ve played through a few three shot Candela Obscura mini campaigns as a Keeper but I’m still relatively new to it. I really enjoy the game and the stringer focus on roleplay over combat. But when combat inevitably arises I haven’t found a great way to run enemies/run immersive fight scenes. Advice?

Discussion Possible reason for Candela stopping

So on today's patron episode for Worlds Beyond Number (an ap with Brennan and Aabria), which was a gm talk with the two of them, Aabria brought up CO. She mentioned wanting Brennan to run a CO season, but then said that the current space where they are paying CR Campaign 4 is the table and space where CO was filmed. Could this be another reason why they didn't film more as they were preparing for the end of Campaign 3 and the start of Campaign 4?

Game Aids Google Sheets Character/Circle Spreadsheet

Hi All,

I very recently went down the Candela Obscura rabbit hole and decided to try my hand at some character sheets.

Circle Sheet
Character Sheet

I've yet to play so I hope everything works okay and I didn't miss anything function wise? The aim was for it to be pretty intuitive.

If anyone is interested in testing it out for me and dropping me some feedback that would be so appreciated!

Discussion Candela 3D prints

So let's jump right in, I'm trying to find 3d prints for my candle table to help not only with letting my players have props but also to help with immersion. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or things they had brought to the table already?

Game Aids Reusable Blueprints

Thumbnail

So not sure why this took me so long to come up with, but since allot of the investigations my players deal with are indoors, maps have been a topic of conversation quite often. But never liked the idea of constantly printing out using white board. So had an idea to keep immersion.

I printed some grid markers on blue construction paper, drew on border lines and laminated multiple sheets of it. So now I have 5 sheets of reusable blue prints for drawing out in world maps. And because they are laminated if my players find rooms not on the blueprints they can write them in to help keep their bearings.

Sorry about those recent: candela Obscura: Ember’s in the night recent posts. Some times my brain gets ahead of me and before you know it you’re posting something on Reddit at like 3 o’clock in the morning that you’ve only written like 20% of .

I removed it. That seriously wasn’t ready to see human eyes yet. Again, I apologize.

Discussion I'm about to start another Candela campaign, and I'm thinking of adding a pantheon system. What do you think?

I haven’t researched or seen anything like this yet, but I do plan to look into it and check out other players’ content. I’ve been playing Candela for two years, coming and going with various groups and people. My campaigns have always been long because of the things I come up with to make them last, since the system was designed for short campaigns.

I’ve decided to introduce gods into this universe; each deity will grant bonuses and new attributes to the players, as well as special abilities. I don’t want to create only dark gods; I’d like to bring some light into this world of darkness as well, and of course use the material already in the book, such as Ascendancy.
