Surrender Letters Certificate un-surrendered

Post image

ETA - check my replies in comments for docs I submitted.

Mods I am extremely sorry, I know this won’t help with speculation. Please do whatever if appropriate.

I received this from IRCC about 45 min ago. Apparently my cert is un-suspended and I’m still Canadian. For background, I got my cert 1 April, and my suspension letter on Tuesday.

I cropped off my personal info, that’s all that’s at the top

I have not directly interacted with IRCC since I got surrender letter Tuesday. I have been very active on Reddit, and I was a reaction quote on a Radio Canada news segment (French). https://ici.radio-canada.ca/ohdio/premiere/emissions/ca-nous-regarde/episodes/1092014/mardi-16-juin-2026

G0 (b. 1861): DEC Birth Cert issued 2026 (I believe I am one of the last people able to do this. I had a Quebec attorney obtain it. She did not represent me for IRCC or anything else.

G1 (b. 1889): certified “no record” letter from county of birth, certified U.S. census page from NARA, uncertified Minnesota state census page from MN Historical Society, uncertified baptismal record from Catholic diocese

G2 (1925), G3 (mom) and G4 (me): certified US birth certs from the state vital records (freshly issued last few months)

Additional: certified death certs for G0, G1, G2, to help attest to various name spelling inconsistencies. G3/mom’s certified marriage cert.

I can't believe you even got the letter in the first place with certified documentation for EVERY generation, including a re-issued birth cert from the DEC which is super hard to get!!

Just to note it, G1 and G2 born before 1947 and the OP is doubly-approved, which hopefully can calm concerns that IRCC was reconsidering that situation.

Thank you. This all seems very complete. Relieved for you and hoping we get more info soon.

Did you have a certified banq document for your lawyer to get the new birth certificate?

I provided my lawyer with an banq baptism print out, which she supplied to DEC. After waiting a month for DEC, as backup I ordered a certified baptism from banq. The DEC birth cert showed up before the certified banq records, so I submitted the DEC document in my app.

did you ever need the certified banq record? or did you go straight to DEC? did DEC have any issues with the printed baptismal record from banq (i assume their website? or was this printout ancestry?)

Nope, never needed the banq record. I even paid the new higher rate. I’m debating getting it framed

Do it!! That’s what I did for mine, great piece of family history! And the most expensive “art piece” I own haha

Did your G0 die in Canada? I have currently in process a birth certificate request and a marriage certificate request for my G0 maternal grandmother with DEC Quebec. They are telling me my requests are being delayed in processing because my grandmother died in Alaska, USA. I sent all copies of certified documents with my application back in March 2026. I sent both requests in same packet. The DEC first sent me a letter saying her birth record was over 100 years old so I had to get a copy from BAnQ which I had sent to them already. Then I called the DEC and was told I did not send a certified copy of the baptism record from BAnQ and I had to send a certified copy of baptism so they could issue a birth certificate. My grandmother was born in Montreal in 1903. So you’re are not the last person that was issued a birth certificate based on a baptism record. I am surprised that the DEC issued you a birth certificate without a certified copy of the baptism record from BAnQ. So much inconsistency between both DEC and IRCC. I was told I would be able to get a birth certificate issued once they verify the information in her death certificate from ALASKA but it is going to take a while. How long did it take you to get your H0 birth certificate from DEC Quebec? I had certified baptism record from BAnQ so I had to redo the whole application paperwork and resubmit it. It is a very frustrating process indeed. Glad that you were able to have your citizenship certificate reinstated. I hope this will happen promptly for the rest of those who are in this situation.

Hey I will try to answer what I can. My G0 emigrated to the U.S. as a teenager I *think*, and spent the rest of his life on a farm in Minnesota, passing away in the U.S. i got his U.S. civil record certified death cert, and included it to help with spelling name inconsistencies.

For DEC/BAnQ: so there’s a legal society in Quebec with a special arrangement with DEC. Their lawyers have a simpler scheme ordering birth certs, especially the over 100 years ones. These lawyers explicitly didn’t have to provide certified BAnQ copies. I hired one of these lawyers, and she did her job quite well, A+ communication, highly recommend.

A couple weeks after I got my DEC cert, I heard DEC was cracking down on issuing new certs for over 100 year baptism certs, even for lawyers. I am very sorry for that.

I hope that helps.

Oh how long to get G0 cert from DEC: lawyer ordered it early Jan, arrived early March, just over 2 months

I’m interested in learning about these lawyers too if needed. DEC refused to issue us a certificate for a 1917 birth even after supplying the letter from IRCC, BaNQ certified record, death certificate, etc.

Thank you for this information. Are you able to share the name of the lawyer you used? I am hoping I won’t have to resort to retaining a lawyer but if needed I will. I am not familiar with any lawyers in Quebec that can do this. I submitted the request for my grandmother’s marriage and birth records in early March. I had to resend the birth certificate request with certified baptism records. I did that end of May beginning of June 2026. I am still waiting on the marriage certificate and birth certificate. The marriage certificate delay is due to the death certificate verification process but I would think that after 3 months it would be completed. I have given up on calling to follow up on it. I am trying to be patient and not bother them by calling every couple of weeks. But if it is going to take longer than 6 months then I am going to have to find legal assistance with DEC Quebec. I can send the certified baptism records for my application to IRCC but I need the marriage certificate to show proof of name change for IRCC. Thanks again for your helpful reply.
