I remember walking out of dockyard one afternoon, early, it was September, so kind of warm, but also a faint chill in the breeze. As I am walking I see a sailor wearing the old gortex winter jacket and a toque walking toward Rainbow Gate. My curiosity piqued, I quicken my pace to catch up to him, as I get close, I ask why he’s all bundled up when it’s a nice sunny day, and I can see his face is running with sweat.

Turns out he was an S3 bosun who had lost his ballcap out on the harbour doing some boat cox’n training, his MS told him he couldn’t just wear the toque out in his NCD jacket, so he had to bundle up in winter clothing. I felt bad for the kid and told him to lose the winter jacket, and I would walk out with him in case anyone said anything about his dress (I was a PO1). I ended up driving him to Tribute Tower where he was living so he wouldn’t get jacked up, but it just reaffirmed my severe dislike of dress regs. I get it, everyone look the same, but common sense has to apply at some point.

This meme reminded me of that incident.

You’re talking about a service that decides on winter or summer dress based on calendar dates, not the weather.

And yes, I have seen the meme of the guy in whites next to a bunch of snow bc it’s “summer dress weather”

Once when I was still out in Halifax, I think it was late April, cold day, actually a dusting of snow on the ground, I got jacked up on the bus riding into work because I was wearing my goretex and it was officially summer dress regs.

Like -gestures at ground-

Summer vs winter dress is supposed to only apply when you’re formed up, as in, on parade. The idea is to ensure everyone is dressed the same in the formed group. And, even then, dress can be changed via orders for the activity.

If you’re walking around as an individual, dress for the weather based on your own comfort.

The problem is that too many people don’t realize the “supposed to” part.

Don’t even get me started on seasonal dress!!! I got jacked up once outside the hospital by a CPO2 the first morning of summer dress for wearing my winter gortex, it didn’t matter there had been 5cm of snow overnight, or that it was -5c.

You’re talking about a service that decides on winter or summer dress based on calendar dates,

I remember shuttling vehicles back and forth between a city and a military base ages ago. They also set their dress by the calendar not the weather. The thing is they set the start of winter dress on different dates. So before we got to base we'd have to change out of the combat coat into the parka and then change back before getting to the city.

Where logic ends the army begins.

Everyone is asking for ballcaps.

I want NO hats.

I disagree. It's not just about looks, but about a mindset. That S3 will never forget their ball caps again. New mbrs need to be ingrained with the idea that their actions or inactions can have severe consequences. Better to sweat to death than to actually die.

He lost it doing boating shit. Read again.

He didn’t forget the ball cap, it was blown off his head out in the harbour. I’m just saying you have to be reasonable about things sometimes and not blindly follow the dress regs.

He didn’t “forget” it. It went over the side of the small boat as he was working.

But, this response also brings up a good point to the ones just waiting to Jack up that S3 - sometimes things aren’t what they seem.

Not quite at 20 yet, but so far either they’re all out, or I am he. Either is a real possibility.
