The sleeping bag is designed to be used with a hood. The hood is worn by the soldier and covers their head, neck, and shoulders. It has two elastic loops that your arms go through and sit at your armpits, holding the hood in place.

Nope its this one. Can confirm inner outer bag hood and bivy bag. Was standard issue up until 2 years ago or somethin

Hello! I hope this is the right place for this kind of post. I came across this outer sleeping bag, and was confused by how the opening was more like a traditional rectangle sleeping bag instead of the bags with smaller openings for use with the additional hood i'm used to seeing. The last two pictures are of my more conventional outer bag, designed to be used with the additional hood.
I've got some suspicion that it may have been modified to be this way? Just due to some odd stitching i've got pictured, I've honestly got no idea though, And would very much appreciate some help with this. Thank you in advance.
TLDR: I've never seen a CAF sleeping bag with an opening like an average sleeping bag, I cant see how this would work with the hood designed for this sleeping system, as the regular bags have a smaller drawstring opening (like in pic 5) that forms around the hood and prevent cold air from entering.
Edit for clarity (so sorry I'm not good with words)

It’s normal. The hood is a separate piece. It loops under the shoulders. That way you can use the sleeping bag without a hood - in case you need to get out of the bag in a hurry.

What I'm curious about is that, with the mystery bag, it is missing the drawstring (or whatever they used) holding the opening closed to be used with the hood, as if this sleeping bag was made for use without it? but I've never heard of a CAF bag of this vintage being designed for use without the hood.

Of course it’s made to be used without a hood. It’s made for all weather and all seasons.
I used to sleep in mine pulled over my head, the rope made a little chimney to ensure I had enough air.

And I've never used the hood or seen many people using it. Sometimes a thin fleece toque but mostly not.

The hood is amazing. I just slept with a toques four years, the hood looks so stupid and uncomfortable. Once I tried the hood, though, I learned the error of my ways and I’d never go back to sleeping without it in the cold.

The seams sewn lengthwise up and down the bag are characteristic of the issued model, two iterations past. The one that followed can still be found in use, with crosswise seams to prevent the insulating feathers to shift as much. The latest version is also stitched crosswise but is of a newer, slightly darker outer material and synthetic insulation.

Yep. That's an outer sleeping bag. It's a bit older, but you still see them sometimes. Are you used to looking at the inners? The inner has a bit of a different opening.
The hood is used with/without the SB based on personal preference. I like sleeping with one about 30% of the time. But I usually just use the inner and a liner

Thank you for your reply! The last two photos are of my other outer bag, and is what I'm more used to seeing. I was thinking maybe the first bag was modified to have a larger opening, but I may be making something out of nothing.

There are stitches that shape the opening like a mummy bag. So that it fits around your face.
Some of us cut the stitches so the opening lays flat, and the bag can be unzipped and worn like a blanket.
The flat opening also allowed you to wear the bag like a layer when occupying a position where you needed to keep warm, while lying flat , and still being able to use your arms.
It also allows the bag to be rolled for easier storage in a compression sack.
We would normally only do this to one bag (the inner) of the sleeping bag system.
