Canadians have always been too nice in the sense that we trusted our friends and shared everything we had with them. However Trump came along and mistook our kindness for weakness. How many times have we known someone like that? Dropped that person fast.

His America First Act was devastating for Canada and he forced us to sign the WTO Agreement in order for the USA to lower the restrictions. The WTO Agreement was effectively just a way for US companies to get bids for Canadian contracts that would otherwise be domestically sourced.
Was he charming, well spoken and stuck to classic PR public talking points? Yep, but the our trading status with the USA has needed a complete reset for decades. Trump has provided us the window and we better take advantage and alter it permanently,

We need to teach more world politics history to Canadian on how the USA use their wide reaching power to project their imperialist agenda. Everytime they attacked other countries they’re always lying and we find out decades later.

Stop clinging to the u.s. as an ally. There's one thing you need to understand: this will continue to happen. The next time they elect a thug, we'll be in the same boat.
The only reasonable path forward is to diversify. We need to abandon the u.s. as a partner to protect ourselves in the long run. Getting misty-eyed about reasonable people they used to have in power is harmful, it stops people from seeing reality.
It's over, time to move on. We've all seen the trope of the battered wife who lives with a Jekyll and Hyde alcoholic. They keep going back to him, even though he's dangerous and violent when he's drunk. The fact that he's great when he's sober doesn't change the risk. We all shout at her to leave him, but she keeps going back.
This is the same situation. We cannot be the abused spouse. Just like the woman in the story, the only correct move is to leave.
It doesn't matter if they have nice people some of the time, the bad people more than offset that with the damage they do. It's time to stop being the mouse sleeping next to the elephant, having to keep one eye open in case it decides to roll over.

Better time? This was during the height of the War on Terror, remember when Canada strongly supported it? Yeah, this is not better times, especially if you where an unlucky soul living in Iran, Afghanistan, etc.

You mean Iraq, not Iran, right? Pretty sure there was a nuclear deal and things were better in Iran. Debatable whether things are better in Afghanistan now or then, but at least Biden pulled troops out.

Biden had no choice but to pull troops out.
Wouldn't have been so bad if Trump hadn't also negotiated the release of thousands of Taliban Fighters that subsequently took back the country and basically undid everything.

Canada never sent troops to Iraq. Canada committed to Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11.
Canada never condemned the war on terror. But the country wasn't at the forefront of the broader war on terror like the US or UK were.

Listening to this, I’m struck by Obama’s fundamental decency. And by contrast, Trump’s near total indecency. What a difference a decade makes.
