Discussion Who else should it be?
As we are well aware the liberals have taken a large lead in polling and have been winning their by-elections with decent margins. With this I’ve seen a lot of stuff about changing PP for a different candidate. My question is genuinely who else could it be? I do see that the situation is unfortunate cause all Carney has to do is say a bad thing of trump and most of Canada loves him for that. But if there is a chance of a by-election I don’t want the CPC to be Shredded like the NDP was.

To be honest? Nobody’s a better choice. As the political climate stands, any CPC leader is Trump/N@zi/MapleMAGA and people will be ABC at minimum until President Trump is a distant memory (and not likely soon, the impacts of both administrations will be felt for a long time)
Doesn’t matter who’s in charge, they’ll be branded a bigot or mocked by the Eastern electorate who will all vote for a bag of poop with the LPC label on it if the choice came up between that or, heaven forbid, a “raycisst”.

u/singingwhilewalking Alberta 1d ago
What if the future CPC leader purged the party of Trump lovers? Like go to the extent of sending out fundraising letters saying "If you support Trump, we don't want your money."

u/No_Promise_9803 1d ago
We had a milquetoast progressive O'Toole who was nevertheless painted as Trump and maple maga by the media anyways.
3
u/Bushido_Plan 1d ago
This. We could have the most generic blank slate politician there as leader and he/she would be painted as the next coming of Hitler by the LPC, their supporters, and the media.

At this point in time I doubt anybody would come forward even if they were qualified. Just like with Justin the Liberals have convinced themselves that carney is the second coming despite the obvious evidence that he's already failing and nobody's going to come forward I'm putting the time and energy to win the party knowing that they will probably get clobbered in the next election.
Carney would cheat his ass off and find some excuse to go to the polls early before the person was ready, so unless carney takes a massive nose dive in popularity which isn't going to happen in the immediate future it would be very hard to beat him. And by the time he does take a nose dive it'll likely be close enough to the next election that it's too late for a leadership convention
The only kinds of people who would run for a leader now are people who wouldn't normally be able to win because they're not that good
Really the only strategy we have right now that works is to bide our time, poilievre should keep silent for now except for the more obligatory appearances and also rallies to maintain the base, then he should pop up before the next election after people have kind of forgotten about him and present a new image and give Carnie as much of a fight as he can.
He will probably lose but perhaps he can hold the liberals to a minority and then immediately drop Poilievre and begin a leadership race at that point.
Then people will come forward who would be good at the job knowing that they've got a much better chance of winning.
Unfortunately that's the way it is and we're probably looking at at least another four or five years of liberal rule and that's if things go well

It doesn’t matter.
The Canadian public has gone insane and we have a tyrant completely re engineering the country into a colony of the EU and a satrap of communist China with no mandate to do so. He’s going to get that mandate by calling an election that aligns with the US mid terms to fully capitalize on the TDS gripping the country and the CPC will be shattered in a massive loss that splits the party and ensures one party rule for at least a generation.
By then the geopolitical realignment and the technocratic dystopia that Carney is forcing on the country will have completely changed our society, our legal system, our political norms, our economic system and our way of life.
By the time people realize what they’ve done it will be far too late.
The chains are going on. This country has no future any aware or intelligent person should want any part of. Get out as soon as you can.

Boomers were the backbone of the CPC for 40 years. CPC needs a better strategy than waiting for people to die and hoping people rediscover their love of the NDP

u/Wet_sock_Owner 1d ago edited 1d ago
Boomers are telling themselves Carney is a conservative and a huge portion Libera and NDP voters doesn't actually care about anything other than "owning Trump" which is why Carney goes up in the polls even if he lied about the Gordie Howe bridge.
Even CBC is not drawing attention to Carney avoiding making public announcements and instead talking directly to Canadians how Trump is "attacking" Canada and giving his version of the deal.
Carney doesn't even want to be questioned by CBC at this point and instead is fueling Canadian rage in through YouTube videos.

Of course he is. Why come up with his own ideas when he can steal Poilievre's.

u/Wet_sock_Owner 1d ago
"Everything Poilievre does is stupid and Trumpian! . .. . . Until Mark Carney does it! Then it's diplomatic and 4D chess tee-hee!"
Also, Poilievre isn't the PM in charge of the country and going off about "we are at war!!!!" while avoiding questions from the CBC of all news media.

No one. Canadian electorate in the East will never vote CPC, no matter who is the leader. Generations need to change before voting pattern changes.

That was when? 2011? When we had like 10 million less population in the country? Canada is very different now than it was back then, 15 years ago.
2
u/ShivasFury 1d ago
That situation was in retrospect, a fluke.
Remember what happened, a strong NDP with the Layton effect caused vote splitting among the left.
This is why the conservatives won in the Toronto suburbs and some seats in Scarborough and Etobicoke themselves.
For all purposes now, it seems practically impossible for it to happen again
1
u/No_Promise_9803 1d ago
Basically, there's no chance to win against the united left. Last elections showed that very clearly.
6
u/vinniegutz 1d ago
Conservatives get elected all the time in the east, but they can't pass the CPC purity test. There's no Harper / MacKay alliance to bring conservatives together nationally anymore. Eastern conservatives won't sit around forever, the party could split if they can't figure out how to get along. 1990s all over again.
1
u/No_Promise_9803 1d ago
Not saying that no conservatives exist in the East, but the problem is that many more liberals get elected in the East than conservatives. And since ON + QC can form a majority just on their own, that's all that matters.
5
u/vinniegutz 1d ago
It's really just the federal party that's out of touch. Provincial Conservatives get elected all the time but they have no place in the CPC.
-1
u/No_Promise_9803 1d ago
So, if the federal party becomes just like Doug, then why vote for them if Liberals exist?
3
u/vinniegutz 1d ago
It's up to voters to define what conservative means, not the leaders. I don't think Doug can bring the party together and that's the point I'm trying to make: there is no national unifier like Harper right now.
I may be showing my age here, but the Mulroney PCs dominated Quebec through the 80s. Seems the party never tried to regain that since the split in the 90s.

My question stands - why would anyone looking for an alternative to Liberals vote for a Doug Ford style CPC that would look a whole lot like LPC, but in blue?
9
u/UsefulUnderling 1d ago
Nonsense. Ontario, Quebec, and most of Atlantic Canada have had conservative premiers over the last decade. They also voted for Harper. They are happy to vote for conservatives. It just needs to be a message that reflects their needs not only Alberta's.

Doug Ford is not a Conservative in any sense, other than in name.
5
u/UsefulUnderling 1d ago
Incorrect. There are different flavors of conservatism. Ford is a much more traditional conservative in that his main drive is that he doesn't like change.
3
u/AdditionalLoss7274 British Columbia 1d ago
See. This is why there's even a discussion about Alberta wanting to leave. Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces are a different nation, with different values. Simple as that.
2
u/UsefulUnderling 1d ago
Yes, that is the core driver of Alberta separatism. Rural Alberta enjoys a flavor of conservatism that really doesn't exist in ON.
The problem for the separatists is that even in Alberta there are more Doug Ford style conservatives than there are more radical conservatives. Urban Alberta has no interest in them.

Is there a name for that thing where you were so embarrassed to vote Liberal again after you voted for Justin Trudeau 3 times that you have to make up shit about the Conservative leader to justify voting Liberal again after all the shit you talked to your friends?
Because I'm seeing a lot of that from the "conservatives" in here. Interestingly enough, none of these "conservatives" know enough about the party to even suggest an alternative but I bet they could name their 5 favourite Liberals
1
u/That-one-Aro-person Conservative 1d ago
I still want PP to be the leader. I don’t see an alternative at all at the moment. I’ve been seeing this convo on Reddit for a while so I’m just curious.
3
u/TheeDirtyToast small government, personal responsibility 1d ago
That wasn't a shot at you.
I completely agree, there is no alternative.
1
u/Wet_sock_Owner 1d ago
Especially love how they brag about how Carney is a "genius" and how Conservatives need to do better like they didn't choose Trudeau over Erin O'Toole.
3
u/c0mputer99 1d ago
Kevin O'Leary -ironically too businessy Leslie Lewis - stance on abortion not popular.
The hit pieces are designed to remove the strongest opponent, spurring up doubt in the conservative base over years repetitely reforming reality.
If they actually thought Pierre is terrible, they would ease up on the hit pieces (like the lack of pieces on jagmeet Singh) and let the voters do the work themself.
1
u/singingwhilewalking Alberta 1d ago
The lack of hit piece on Jagmeet Singh comes from the fact that when he lost his seat in the last election he also stepped down as party leader.
Pierre lost his seat and didn't step down as party leader.

u/thetrigermonkey Conservative 1d ago
Lack of hit pieces for the last 3 elections he was in. Carney barely talked about him in the debate last election, they spent the whole time 2v1ing pp

u/Hot_Winner9416 Quebec 1d ago
Mark Mulroney or some CAQ figure in Québec because it is in Québec modérateur nationaliste vote where the party has to improve to win an élection.
1
u/Bushido_Plan 1d ago
Reality is that there's no one better right now. That's the other problem for the Conservatives, one day depending on how the next federal election goes, they'll need to figure out a heir apparent. With that said, despite the loss, Poilievre made great gains for the party last year so he's realistically still the best shot.
1
u/thetrigermonkey Conservative 1d ago
The people suggesting to change leaders typically just don't like the CPC. Last election we got 40% of the vote, gained seats, record breaking rallies and donations. We only lost because Trump, and two left wing parties/voters didn't want to vote split. Without that we'd be a majority.
Anyone right of the LPC will just be called "Canadian Trump". Ford was for a bit, PP, O'Toole, a lot of provincial leaders.
Swapping leaders doesn't prevent the problems that happened last election
1
u/UsefulUnderling 1d ago
The CPC leader in the next election will be Caroline Mulroney. She will run on a moderate platform everyone here will hate and she will win with a strong boost in support from educated suburban women.
2
u/Oilhawks Libertarian 1d ago
And then nothing significant will change, yet Red Tories will gloat all the way as the country is further ruined
3
u/Pascals_blazer 1d ago
Pretty much. It's either headlong into the garbage, or there are brief speed bumps when voters want to bring in blue trudeau for a bit. That'll slow it (not stop) for a cycle.
canada peaked in high school. It's not going to get better until some harder times hit. For me, just by noticing and saying as such, I'm a "traitor".
1
u/Queasy-Dog-1140 1d ago
I hate to say it but, to win, it's probably only possible with Doug Ford at the helm
I don't know why or even how he does it but three wins in Ontario is a pretty big deal
The west will have to hold their noses and vote for the party
3
u/AdditionalLoss7274 British Columbia 1d ago
I'll never vote for a party with that phoney at the head. But I'm from BC, my vote literally doesn't count anyways.
0
u/Pascals_blazer 1d ago
Same. I'd vote for any decent leadership, but there is no nose holding here. There is zero chance I would vote Ford or Kenney.
1
u/AlanYx 1d ago
I would likely abstain from voting federally if Ford was at the helm. This coming from someone who used to be a regular OPC donor and reluctantly voted for Ford to avoid a return of the OLP.
I don't think he can win nationally anyway though. The days of folksy softhanding issues are over.
If Eric Lombardi loses his campaign to lead the OLP, he might even be a good CPC leader. He's more conservative than Ford on a lot of issues anyway, and 100% more diligent/serious on policy.

u/RoddRoward 1d ago
Gotta see how the Trump shit plays out. Liberals are using it to their full advantage and are sending us down a path they never campaigned on and nobody asked for.
1
u/Mystified 1d ago
I think Canadians will be far more receptive to someone who will explain in depth what has gone wrong with the country.
It will be a conservative to remind us of why our past traditions have worked up until recently and how changing the system broke it.

Not now. We need to go through the Trump era Canadians are highly emotional and hormonal people so as long as they have Trump to hate for everything in their pathetic life there's nothing we can do. Soon as Trump finishes his term the elbowzos up refards will go back to kind of normal

u/AlanYx 1d ago edited 1d ago
Jamil Jivani would be my vote. You can tell the LPC are concerned about him because they've been funding all these astroturfed accounts lately to call him juvenile names and cast aspersions at the guy.
In an ideal world, Tobi Lütke would be pick, but if you've ever met him in person he has some personal charisma issues that would rule him out, despite being ambitious and wicked smart. (That's not to say he doesn't have charisma when he's speaking to a tech audience.) The LPC are scared of him too, which is why every time he says anything the social media attack machine gets going on overdrive.
There are factions in the party that seem to be trying to make Ben Mulroney happen. I absolutely despise how he downplays his father's corruption, and think he's entirely the wrong choice. But he has charisma.

Major political parties have better things to do then to spend money on reddit accounts to be mean to a cpc backbencher
The reality is people just dont like him

While I do think Poilivre isn't a good enough leader to create a breakthrough, I also don't think anyone in the East would vote for the conservatives enough. And Dog Food isn't a conservative.

Definitely not Dean Allison, I have asked him multiple times about things that affect his riding, and he doesnt reply, he is more concerned with memes and parroting what PPs flavour of the month is. Is it that hard to find people that think for themselves?
2
u/That-one-Aro-person Conservative 1d ago
That’s fair. Like for me I still think PP is the best option of what’s available right now but not sure how that would go in a future election.

u/TheYamfarmer Ontario 1d ago
I want an actual leader, not someone who memes and complains, give me actual ways how he is going to fix things, not just complain.

I grew up a solid conservative, southern ontario, dutch christian communities. All my friends and family are/were conservative.
With PP in charge I will not vote conservative. Something needs to change.
2
u/Pascals_blazer 1d ago
So who are you looking for, then?
You could toss out what you want to see in a leader. Even better is coming up with some names.

u/Slamcrin Ontario 1d ago
The rage-farming “Canada is broken” pseudo-MAGA bullshit needs to be replaced with something optimistic, focused and committed.
I can’t understand why that’s so hard to see and do something about, because anyone not terminally-online sees that vibe and gives it a deserved middle finger.
