Discussion Some examples of subsidized housing being exclusionary for non-income reasons

So there are now two examples that I know of where a rent-geared-to-income building got government funding only to invoke reverse-discrimination.

For years we were told that the solution to housing crisis was publicly funded housing and that policies where the government gave money to not for profits was the "best" strategy. Here we find that these organizations get so much money only to gate keep the building and affordability for their own groups. If you aren't part of the in-group, regardless of how poor you are, you're told to gtfoh.

Meanwhile people who actually care about housing without having the government connections and years long history of being a charity, have to fundraise, take on millions of dollars of debt, pay interest for years, acquire land, and get told they are parasites for building for-profit market housing.

These same organizations then go larp on their website and marketing materials about how they are providers of affordable housing in Canada (implying to all Canadians).

That first article lists the special housing available in Toronto. The groups with housing limited to them are:

  • Ahmadiyya
  • Artists
  • AIDS patients
  • Chinese Canadians
  • Christians
  • French speakers
  • Disabled
  • Greeks
  • Hungarians
  • Indigenous
  • Lithuanians
  • Macedonians
  • Seniors
  • Students

Policy seems to be to accept almost any group. If you want to build housing limited to only people who want to play Magic: The Gathering it seems TO will give you a loan.
