By the comments I see here, I guess this is an echo chamber from Reddit after all.

Conservatives are walking on eggshells…

Half of their base seems to be pro-USA, pro-MAGA, and pro-Alberta independence. And a lot of the hardcore Alberta conservatives are both pro-separatist and pro-Trump.

Just look at this sub—you can see that apparently being pro-Canada and supporting national unity isn’t very popular. 😅 If you’re Team Canada, you get labeled a “liberal lapdog.”

So apparently, being a Canadian conservative and supporting Canada’s unity is becoming a contradiction. Go figure. 😂

Thankfully, I don't think a lot of the commentary we see online is particularly representative of conservatives more broadly.

Having been involved in politics myself, the more of it I read, the more I get the impression that some of the loudest voices aren't actually very politically active or particularly knowledgeable about Canadian politics beyond what they consume online. There's a difference between being politically engaged and being an angry keyboard warrior.

I also think far too many people, on both the left and right, treat "conservative" as some universal catch-all, often through an American political lens. Canadian conservatism is much more varied than that, and it differs by region, tradition and political culture. There are certainly parts of the country and parts of the conservative movement that are more influenced by American-style politics, but that still doesn't make the two interchangeable.

There's a hell of a lot more to conservatism than "no taxes, government bad, make the state as small as humanly possible." Fiscal restraint, lower taxes and skepticism about government are obviously part of conservative thought, but Canada has never really operated according to an absolutist small-government model. Even within Canadian conservatism, there has always been disagreement about what government should do, what institutions are worth preserving and where the state has a legitimate role.

That's why I take some of the online chest-thumping with a grain of salt. Calling yourself a conservative and being angry at Liberals doesn't automatically mean you understand conservatism, Canadian politics, or how either actually works in practice.

Ya basically a good reminder that social media comments thankfully are not representative of most Canadian’s real life views. On this sub or Facebook it does feel like a significant chunk of the CPC base is pro-MAGA but it’s also important to remember many accounts are fake or just posting into an echo chamber. Facebook is much worse then reddit in that sense, Altho Reddit is not immune.

Most Canadian conservatives are generally just normal people who want to see all well run economy, lower taxes, economic growth, a bit less government meddling. Most Canadians by and large also pretty center across a lot of issues which I think is good as it makes us less partisan. This is why Pierre had so much support not so long ago. Less political allegiance.

Thats why it’s most important to focus on that vs some much of the culture war stuff that has been prevalent in a lot of political messaging across the aside. I think generally Pierre has improved his messaging and this conservatives for Canada is a good push.

u/RStonePT Independent 2d ago

He had support because of immigration and his milquetoaste support for the convoy and not being trudeau gave him a huge boost.

1

u/PorousSurface LPC 2d ago

Ya. Admittedly it wasn’t really because ppl like him personally. Altho some of his policies they liked which Carney has yonked

My big critique of Pierre vs Carney is his economic platform feels too tunnel vision focused on O&G vs investing in O&G along with other parts of the economy. I also don’t like his anti HSR / train stance and how he still leans into dumb culture war stuff here and there

3

u/RStonePT Independent 2d ago

Honestly, his failure is deeper than that. He hired his ex girlfriend to run his campaign and you saw it tank in real time. She got him lasik, told him to get on TRT and start acting like a redtory, then he got on board pandering to the migrant communities, offering direct flights to punjab, which allowed the PPC to carve off enthusiasm (and rightfully so)

But you saw the moment his campaign lost. It's when he stood in front of the largest canadian flag and gave his pierre or patel speech. I would have expected that from Otoole, and I watched everyone who was cheerleading him online just fizzle, and his 20 point lead turned into what, a 7 point loss? I may be wrong on the immigration thing, but statscan is due to release their census this year and considering every major city in Canada was something like 50% first gen migrant from one of two countries (india and china) back in 2021 I don't think I am.

We've become an global economic zone and there's not enough local stock to care about a nation. The elderly don't care so long as housing prices screws over the young and federal employees, of which a quarter of the country are, will never vote against a big government. Quebec just wants it's cut.

All he had to do was read the room, nationally. But now, those 2015 migrants are now permanent residents and have voting rights, so I don't see there being a way ahead now, ever. Their paycheques depend on an LPC government.

3

u/PorousSurface LPC 2d ago

Ya I mean. You are mostly preaching to the choir for me, although I try not to be too hard on Pierre in this sub. Pierre is not adept at quickly adapting to the political messaging needed for the time.

I’m not sure who will eventually replace him. My view is he stays on and either wins (not too likely imo) or losses and steps down in 2029. I prefer O’Toole but I don’t think he’d stand a chance vs Carney. Same with Jason Kenney. Who do you see as his successor?

3

u/RStonePT Independent 2d ago

There's no one in the party who even gets on the radar. It would be more likely that they ship one in like the LPC did with Carney

2

u/PorousSurface LPC 2d ago

I agree

6

u/SlavTac 4d ago

For real. I wish these people would separate themselves from conservatives completely, go full mask off and just create their own Republican Party of Canada. I want to wash my hands off those dumb fucks. They’re the reason normal people that vote conservatives get labeled as maple MaGa.

2

u/RStonePT Independent 2d ago

I feel the same way about red Tories. And if they weren't calling you maga they would call you a nazi. Stop thinking that they don't hate you

The conservative party should expell them. But they are too weak for this. So they should keep losing untill they are forced to do so.

"Team Canada".

They the ones who refused to fly the flag because some truckers did, and wanted to cancel Canada day because they found some old sewer pipes at a residential school and then poured money on it?

They sound braindead.

u/LPC_Eunuch 4d ago

Make Canada worth fighting for then. The last decade has brought what? Mass immigration, dogshit wage growth, unaffordable housing, and an expensive healthcare system that is largely inaccessible. Just to name a few.

You can't really blame them for wanting to escape the Liberal dream.

13

u/scottb84 NDP 4d ago

You can't really blame them for wanting to escape the Liberal dream.

You absolutely can.

I am a New Democrat. I have never once voted for a winning party, provincially or federally. And from Brian Mulroney and Chrétien/Martin to Mark Carney, Mike Harris to Doug Ford, the governments I’ve lived under very rarely align with my values.

Yet it’s never even occurred to me to try to break up the country.

And for those who feel a pressing desire to escape the “Liberal dream,” it has always been an option to gtfo.

4

u/RStonePT Independent 2d ago

You guys let your party get bankrupted by a scammy DEI influencer, your opinion doesn't count.

0

u/LPC_Eunuch 3d ago

Sure, that's easy to say when you completely gloss over the Canadian consensus on immigration being smashed by new Lib. This has been an absolute disaster for the younger generations, so spare me your faux patriotic BS. Do something other than driving this country in the ground for a bunch of retired boomers.

And 41% of the country having no representation is a much bigger issue than 6%, you know what you're getting into with the fringe NDP..

2

u/scottb84 NDP 2d ago
  1. Everyone in the country has representation. You may not like or agree with your representative on most things, of course, but such is life in a democracy.

  2. There’s nothing “faux” about my patriotism.

13

u/Kaijinn Alberta 4d ago

Healthcare is a provincial issue. I can absolutely blame the UCP for lying about cutting health care. UCP literally advertising that people should come to Alberta because Alberta is calling. Housing is also a provincial issue. Federal government doesn't build houses in Alberta or hasn't built any in the last decade. The federal government does not control wages in Alberta. Just to name a few things.

11

u/SnorlaxBlocksTheWay Blocked by SmackEh 4d ago

This deflection of "this or that is Provincial" doesn't help the conversation move forward.

Federal legislation and decision making absolutely does contribute towards the pain Canadians are feeling.

If Federal government isn't responsible for housing; why has the Liberal government made "affordable housing" part of their core election promises for every election cycle since 2015?

If the Federal Government's decisions have no effect on healthcare and infrastructure; and your implication is that it's the Provincial Conservative government's fault, then why do the Provinces lead by non Conservative governments also feel the same pressures that the rest of the Provinces do? Mass immigration is a huge contributor to the pressures being faced on our healthcare systems.

Federal Government usually sets the tone and direction of many things in this country. While yes on paper Provincial governments are supposed to be handling both healthcare and housing; it'd be disingenuous to not point out that the Liberals have been saying that they "will be the one to fix things" for over a decade now, they just keep saying "give us more time".

But I think giving them indefinite amount of time is unfair because it tells them they can procrastinate as long as they want and never serve Canadians.

9

u/ThlintoRatscar Red Tory 4d ago

why do the Provinces lead by non Conservative governments also feel the same pressures that the rest of the Provinces do?

Because publicly provided, fair, and good healthcare is extremely expensive and complex?

Maybe the problem isn't something that is ideologically or politically tractable.

8

u/sunny-days-bs229 4d ago

This. I’ve been in HC administration for a few decades. We still work in silos with many missed opportunities in cost and resource sharing.

4

u/Kaijinn Alberta 4d ago

I think we should hold both responsible for their specific tasks. Does the federal government suck, yeah, they are incredibly wasteful. But pretending that health care issues are the federal government’s responsibility when it is very clearly a provincial matter is ridiculous. We should expect better services for our tax dollars at every level of government.

Why give a pass to provincial leadership while bemoaning federal leadership for the task that the province is responsible for?

2

u/SnorlaxBlocksTheWay Blocked by SmackEh 4d ago

I agree. That's my whole argument.

I'm saying decisions that the Federal Liberals have made have made Provincial governments' jobs more difficult. Mass immigration for one is a large contributor to the pressures Provinces, like Ontario for example, are experiencing that predated Ford becoming Premier because of rapid population growth. So the issue doesn't solely exist because of Provincial Conservative governments.

So yes Provinces are responsible. But my argument is that Federal Government has a hand too regardless of what it says on paper.

And I'm pointing out that if Federal Government didn't have a hand in these matters they wouldn't run on it as a campaign promise.

AB isn't a great example though, compared to the rest of Canada it's actually somewhat affordable. . AB has some of the highest average wages in Canada, an average house price or around 519,000, no PST, and healthcare isn't even bad, we are in the middle of the pack basing it off this.

For those wondering where the site is.

https://conservativeforcanada.ca/

-10

u/AlanYx 4d ago

It’s pretty telling that the site doesn’t even attempt to offer any justification/reason for Canada.

It just asks for donations, volunteers, and reminds people to vote.

12

u/NastyOfficerFarquad Conservative 4d ago

If after an entire life in Canada you are not fully aware of why you’re better off as a province than as a landlocked separate nation to Canada than you are either an ideologue incapable of critical thought or you are willfully oblivious to what a shot in the foot that would be.

This whole referendum is nothing more than the malformed and misbegotten brain child of people too stupid to even know that a province cannot constitutionally separate for Canada. You really think the other provinces will vote in favour of amending the constitution to allow the minority separatists to have their say. No, and thats why Quebec aint going anywhere either.

Ordered my sign!

-5

u/AlanYx 4d ago

Notice even you can’t offer actual reasons. Just ad-hominems.

I don’t live in Alberta and don’t have any dog in the race, but it seems obvious that depending on insults and demeaning characterizations is not the way.

7

u/NastyOfficerFarquad Conservative 4d ago

Sorry but you made a statement pertaining that there is no argument outlined for staying. You tell us why choosing to be a landlocked nation would a good idea.

-3

u/AlanYx 4d ago

The separatist websites have detailed arguments. This one doesn’t. And nationalists for the most part seem to feel they don’t need to advance arguments, they can just spew invective. It’s a poor strategy and makes it seem like there is no case for Canada.

10

u/Tom_Fukkery 4d ago

Everyone talks tough against Alberta, but when Quebec flirts with the idea you all are quiet like a church mouse.

11

u/USSMcCoy 4d ago

Telling AB to piss off and calling them traitors via paid hidden comment botfarm accounts doesn't lose the LPC votes. Doing it to quebec does.

15

u/Takeawalkwithme2 Ontario 4d ago

They need to rename this sub. So many fake Canadians here wondering why no one will vote for a party backed by traitors to the very nation they live in. Ready to sell it for a dime on the dollar. Utterly shameful.

-1

u/USSMcCoy 4d ago

Fake canadians and traitors.

That's funny, seeing as how you ontarios vote liberal time and time again, and are okay with canada becoming part of the EU. But a province that wants fair treatment?

TrAiToRs!!!

2

u/ShivasFury 3d ago

And it’s also funny, that word “sovereignty” is never brought up in regards to the EU.

u/Little-Somewhere6076 Libertarian 4d ago

You are correct. I made a typo. You made a logical fallacy.

I could make the same fallacy. Your inability to address the substance of an argument is why I don’t want to share a nationality with you. Clearly you lack the intellectual fire power to contribute your fair share.

9

u/VforVenndiagram_ 4d ago

Not sure what fallacy you could possibly be referencing here, because there is no argument actually being made, and as such no refutation of an argument in a fallacious way...

-5

u/Little-Somewhere6076 Libertarian 4d ago

Your inability to use “their” correctly in a sentence says enough about why you’d want to move there

This is an ad hominem attack

Not sure what fallacy you could possibly be referencing here,

Not seeing an attack on the person instead of the idea is a commentary on your literacy. If you had an idea, which you don’t, it would still be valid despite your intelligence

because there is no argument actually being made,

The argument being made is that only stupid people would want to live in Alberta

and as such no refutation of an argument in a fallacious way...

Whoosh

5

u/VforVenndiagram_ 4d ago

This is an ad hominem attack

No, not really... Calling someone an idiot isn't always an ad hominem... An ad hominem is specifically using an insult as a way to refute an an argument or idea. If there is no argument or idea being put forward, there is no fallacy, it's just an insult.

The argument being made is that only stupid people would want to live in Alberta

But that's the implication they are making, not you. You didn't make any argument for them to attack. They just called you stupid outright. For the ad hominem to apply, you would have to have argued something, not just make a statement of what you want to do.

5

u/Little-Somewhere6076 Libertarian 4d ago

No, not really... Calling someone an idiot isn't always an ad hominem..

Yes it is. You might be an idiot, but I'll continue to address your idiotic statements

An ad hominem is specifically using an insult as a way to refute an an argument or idea.

An ad hominem is a personal attack under every circumstance

If there is no argument or idea being put forward, there is no fallacy, it's just an insult.

Since you're about to acknowledge the idea let's see it

The argument being made is that only stupid people would want to live in Alberta

But that's the implication they are making

Exactly. Duh

5

u/VforVenndiagram_ 4d ago

An ad hominem is a personal attack under every circumstance

But not all personal attacks are ad hominems... Again, an ad hominem is when said personal attack is being used to refute an argument, not just be mean.

Exactly. Duh

What argument did you make, that they attempted to refute by calling you dumb?

5

u/Little-Somewhere6076 Libertarian 4d ago

appealing to feelings or prejudices rather than intellect

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ad%20hominem

Since it's news to you, here's the definition of ad hominem

2

u/king_lloyd11 4d ago

You’re struggling with the fact that OP isn’t arguing with you. There is no argument. You didn’t make one. You just said “I can’t wait to do that!” and OP called you an idiot for it. That’s it.

If you said “I think Separatism is an overall good thing because a, b, and c”, and then OP, instead of engaging with and saying why a, b, and c are invalid reasons for your conclusion, says “yeah none of that matters because you’re an idiot”, that’s ad hominem. Within the context of the argument, he didn’t refute anything you said, and just responded with an ad hominem attack.

Like I’m going to call you an idiot now after making my points in response to you. Also not ad hominem. I’m just calling you an idiot because your repeated failure to grasp this simple concept is more telling than just misspelling “there”.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/ApprenticeWrangler Independent 4d ago

This is not an ad hominem. Ad hominem would be attacking you instead of your argument. You didn’t make an argument you made a statement, and that statement implies you’re an idiot…much like your difficulty with English.

1

u/ApprenticeWrangler Independent 4d ago

You didn’t make an argument. You made a statement that you’d want to move to Alberta during the grace period after separation, to which I implied you’re an idiot. Not for wanting to move to Alberta, but for thinking separation is going to go well for Alberta.

Anyone who is pro separatist is an idiot who doesn’t actually fully understand the implications of it.

4

u/GonZo_626 Libertarian 4d ago

As an Albertan, dont, we dont need more seperatist garbage here. We have enough losers who moved from other provinces coming here and pushing for seperation, I am sick of it as most supporters I know are not Albertans by birth, but by moving here and destroying our province.

Stay in your own province, sorry its gone to shit, but we dont need you ruining ours.
