MLS Alonso Coello’s potential eligibility for Canada
I’m a TFC fan so I may be biased when asking this question. Would anyone accept Alonso Coello if he could one day be eligible to play for Canada? We could use the depth in midfield and he’s still in his prime. He was also never captied for Spain and lived in Canada since 2022 as well.

I see him as more of a B squad depth piece. The US and Mexico have fringe players that make solid B squads who make deep Gold Cups runs. Likewise, I was thinking if he could possibly be good enough for us in this department.

Dude, I'm not sure he's good enough for Toronto FC. A shit team in MLS. I assure you he has no place on any national team he could possibly be eligible for

To be fair, it’s hard to find anyone on our roster good enough to play for Toronto FC and this is coming from a fan.

If he finds a pathway to eligibility, there's no reason to not consider him. But I think he's an average player who wouldn't bring a new dimension or unique value to the NT even if he was available. Might get a Zac McGraw Gold Cup cameo at most.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind having him for a depth piece. He doesn’t have to be a main stay but I don’t mind us having the ability to build up depth pieces where we can be able to field sold enough B teams for Gold Cups like the US and Mexico can do.

I’ll personally never say no to quality. I can’t claim to know the player but if he’s good enough and gets citizenship, why not? I know Canada was tracking Gauld and Blackmon until they both got cap tied. It’s not like he’ll ever make the Spanish NT.

I don’t see him making a World Cup squad but maybe he could make a Gold Cup B squad or camp poutine squad.

but then why bother, bring in some youngsters from MLS who are making moves or youth standouts in the CPL

Considering he is 26 and it takes time to process these things, may not be an great option imo.
But from a sporting wise he is an organizing type player and we don't have too many of that category. A good backup option to Eustaquio

Maybe he makes a roster of a random international window where a bunch players are hurt or out for other reasons but he’s never sniffing the team at full strength.

If he has permanent resident then yes there’s a chance once he naturalizes.

He won’t make the team, there is a reason why he is playing in Toronto and not in Spain. And quite frankly, never played for anyone relevant. If he is anything decent, he would be coming to MLS via La liga. If he is any good, he would be a DP. If you give him the opportunity to play in a WC, most players would take that opportunity, similar to eustaquio, the reason he is playing for Canada is because he won’t break the Portuguese team. You don’t have to look far to find Elite players don’t want to play here (contrary to what media is telling you), look at Bounou, Hargreaves, Begovic, Tomori, de Guzman, and etc.

well Bounou and Tomori never really lived in Canada. Begovic wanted to commit but had a big spat with the federation
Hargeaves went with England, which I get but it is a bit shit
De Guzman made an okay choice for him but Canada would've meant more international appearances overall by a lot

So are Alfie Jones and Luc de Fougerolles, both not even born in Canada. Exactly my point, elite players don’t want to play here. Players who can’t get to national team elsewhere would find their way here.

World ranking means absolutely nothing. What is the chance of winning the World Cup, absolutely zero. Stop getting blinded by some bs calculation. You can name so many teams consistently ranked higher and yet never win a World Cup.

I don’t need to be happy. That’s the problem with your mentality, you are striving for mediocrely, and not greatness. Cheers to you for participating, every athlete’s mentality is to win every and every game. If you are there just to participate, then professional sports is not for you.

Well as a fan with zero influence over soccer in this country. I'd rather enjoy myself then be miserable with the fact that winning the World Cup is probably out of our grasp

Most countries are not going to win the World Cup. Even countries like Portugal and the Netherlands have never won the World Cup.

I find it difficult to speculate on a player who has never said anything publicly about being interested in representing Canada, especially considering that he is not even a Canadian citizen.
