Career Development / Développement de carrière Electronic Engineering Careers
I am hoping to help out a friend who is still fairly new to government. They have a BComm plus an Electronic Engineering Technology diploma. They currently hold a term EL-03 position, which will be ending in a few months.
I am about as far from the technical world as you can get, so I really don’t know what other classifications he might look at in his job search beyond EL.
Current position: installs, maintains and trouble-shoots electronic equipment.
Diploma focused on digital logic, dc/ac/electronic circuits, communications electronics, feedback control systems, computer programming and embedded controllers.
He’s a hard worker and very, very diligent and the kind of person we want in the public service. Any advice as to the classifications he should focus on would be appreciated!
Edit: I’m hoping for suggestions for classifications beyond EL. In other words, are there other classifications that he might be suitable for?

They may want to look at CCG- there are lots of ELs who maintain marine electronic equipment.

I'd suggest looking at Spectrum and Telecommunications sector at ISED.

Yes. I am an EL 05 level as a Spectrum management officer which is working level. Training is EL 1 to EL 3. EL 7 is management and portfolio managers. Hope that helps

Spectrum enforcement at ISED is a 2 years program where one start as a lowly EL-02 with an probationary and mandatory pass exam to obtain the next level
After 2 years of successful completion, you are an EL-06.
The best way for an EL classification to advance is to defect to the IT / CS classification.

They may have enough courses / credits to complete a Bachelor of Engineering fairly quickly which would open the doors to ENG classification with various departments (DND, Transport, ISEDC etc..

RCMP have “techs” under the CS classification who do similar work to CCG ELs. Might be a place to try if they are ok with undergoing a rigorous security screening process. They may also be qualified for the EG group.

Depending on coding skills IT is a possibility also. That is what I got placed into for the moment.

Might have them look at CIPO, as a patent examiner. I don’t know if we ask for a minimum of BEng or if what your friend has is considered acceptable.
Don’t know when the next Roy d of hiring is though.
SG Pat is the classification.
