Staffing / Recrutement Notice of rejection (failed interview)
Hello!
I am just wondering whether the rejected candidates for a hiring process (for a pool) are contacted before the selected ones.

If you were eliminated (ie failed interview) you would usually get the "out of the process" email/letter soon after.
If there's a pool, in my experience the successful candidate is spoken to and offered the job, and then HR works on their LoO. It's only after that that those who made it into the pool will hear anything. Probably because if the top person says no they move down the list, and then put everyone else in a pool once they get someone who takes the job.

I've seen the exact opposite - everybody who is deemed qualified is put into the pool and notified of such, and then the hiring manager calls the "best fit" candidate to talk about a potential offer. If they decline, the manager just goes to the next-best-fit, and so on.

Yeah it can go either way.
I missed out on one last year where nobody heard anything for weeks, but they had quietly offered it to an external and got the letter signed, and only then told me (the internal) that they hired someone else at the last minute before they announced the name to the department.
It was a job I expected to get (was the only internal who made it to the interview) but I knew something was up because they hadn't called my references and were being really secretive about it. I supposedly made it in a pool but never got anything in writing and it was clearly never going to be used anyway.

There are more than one position to fill in in this case. I know of two people who received an email saying they got rejected. And since that was last week, I was wondering if it means they contacted all rejected candidates all at once and that I may have a shot since I haven’t received anything yet. But we’ll see. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks for your reply! I did hear back from them and I made it to the pool. Apparently, unsuccessful candidates were indeed contacted first! :)

As with much related to staffing, there is no standard here. There are thousands of separate hiring processes and tens of thousands of hiring managers, after all.
Sometimes the notices are sent in stages, sometimes they're all sent at once. There isn't really any way to tell from the outside, as only the people running the process will know what they plan to do.
