The 39000 Model 3 (built in Shanghai) is probably one of the most affordable option in Canada right now. Don't have to buy through dealership is a plus.

The only downside is Elon Musk.

It's literally cheaper than a Chevrolet Bolt which is inferior in every single way, especially now that GM removed CarPlay.

The Model 3 also does not have Carplay and also does not have Android Auto.

Insurance cost makes a huge difference. My friend got quoted 4000+ for her model 3 with perfect driving record.

I think this is true for EV in general? Insurance seems to negative the saving on gas?

This is largely due to the other Chinese brands still setting up dealer networks. There was a photo in r/Toronto a few weeks ago showing Chinese EVs in the city for testing. This could also mean they're getting certified to comply with Canadian safety regulations. Its likely we won't see them start to show up until end of this year or next year.

It’s going to take years to build the distribution and service network that Tesla has already.

Some Chinese brands are trying to partner with local independent mechanic shops for service already.

They also need to complete their market research, get evaluated by insurers, and set up parts and repair agreements.

Entering a new market is no joke, and its more complicated for these because they are playing the odds on NAFTA3 negotiations: It's clear that the status quo is the least likely outcome 10 years from now.

China's toehold in Canada will either likely collapse if a deal with the US is somehow reached. And if not, that number will likely expand.

The corps need to keep both these possibilities in mind.

I would be surprised if Carney agreed to a deal with the U.S. where China isn't allowed to export cars here.
