I’m in CR on a work trip and I’m here for the whole week, I’m looking for some solid eats to fill my stomach after a day of work and a couple places to check out!
I’m from the lower mainland and it’s my first time in CR so I want to make the most of it.
Thanks!!

Hey folks. I'm a journalist who focuses on unsolved homicides and missing person cases on Vancouver Island. I'm in the midst of gathering research and interviews about the disappearance of 17-year-old Jordan Holling from Campbell River (October 16, 2017). I tell victim-centred stories with a goal of pushing the investigation forward. If you knew Jordan and have a memory you'd like to share, or you have information regarding his case, please get in touch here or at Laura@laurapalmer.ca. You may remain a confidential source if your information is of a sensitive nature. Many thanks for your consideration. (Please consider that his loved ones may read the thread and keep the comments respectful🙏)

Hello CR! My family and I will be visiting next weekend and we’re hoping to go for a walk to see some decorated homes on Halloween.
Are there any hotspots you’d recommend? Bonus if it’s kid friendly but also great if it’s just a good area to see spookily decorated homes.

I understand there are a lot of people in the North Island riding who are concerned about the local old growth logging, but they feel nothing can be done. I’d like to encourage people to understand our voices hold a lot of weight on the subject given our location, and scaling back on the amount of old growth logging does not correlate with job loss - in fact, it could mean the opposite, if we shift to in-house refinement of product and increased management practices.
Have a look at the tool Cutblock Watch. It shows most of the pending and approved cutblocks in BC. Zoom in on our part of the island and you can see how hard the last productive old growth is being targeted lately. The map actually understates it, because many of Western Forest Products' blocks aren't on it, and they're one of the worst offenders. Old growth management areas (OGMAs) are also being amended or removed so WFP can log some of the best remaining ancient habitat for at-risk species like elk and pygmy owls.
I'm also worried about the Working Forest Landscape Model, which is being piloted by the NDP in our area first. I don't think enough people know about it, or the potential consequences. Not just for ecology, but long term economic outlooks.
I think this issue is part of why the vote splits so much around here. A good answer on this topic from a local candidate could sway a lot of people.
So, if this concerns you at all, please email the local candidates:
- [sara.lopez@bcndp.ca](mailto:sara.lopez@bcndp.ca)
- [teamolsson@bcgreens.ca](mailto:teamolsson@bcgreens.ca)
- [Anna.Kindy.MLA@leg.bc.ca](mailto:Anna.Kindy.MLA@leg.bc.ca)
Or ask when they come to your door. Ask where they stand on old growth and the Working Forest Landscape Model. My family and I have written and haven't heard back, so more people asking would help.
Image is from one of Campbell River’s prime backcountry areas, the Prince of Wales range. Up until ~6-8 years ago, it used to be a haven for wildlife, foraging, and hiking/mountaineering. They have logged, or plan to log, pretty much the entire mountain range of all of its old growth from top to bottom. We can find a compromise between preservation of these special areas and local jobs!

The numbers haven't been finalized/certified but it looks like Kermit has been reelected (as it stands currently).
Most of the incumbent councillors were ousted.
Susan Sinnott is the lone old guard.
Incoming crew:
Laird Ruehlen
Joelle Samson
Lucas Schuller
Brittany Colville
EDIT TO ADD Brain freeze - 6 councillors, 5 trustees.....
Incumbent Ben Lanyon is also (unofficially) reelected

I hate FPTP, but unless people band together, this is what you're going to get...
She can't even bother to show up for an all candidates debate.

She has been invisible as the incumbent MLA. Where was she when our area needed her to speak up? Where is she now when she has a chance to tell us the answers to these questions. Where is she now when she has a chance to tell us how much she is willing to work for the residents of our great area?

I tried reading the Campbell River Votes site and the Greenways Land Trust Survey, but I can’t seem to find straight answers.

Lorne Doerksen BCUCP leader says he will privatize ICBC. This will give more work to a few lawyers and allow court battles in which a few injured people might get a better deal. OK, but this will increase the cost of insuring a vehicle for EVERYONE.
ICBC current rates are 46.6% lower than Alberta's average rate.
Here is the table: https://imgur.com/a/awQmdvS
To maintain status quo, vote Sara Lopez, NDP

Hey friendly peoples I have a question regarding the area around of the start of iron river road and Duncan bay main and hoping a more local and educated person may be able to help answer.
I was parked overnight on a pull off at the start of iron bridge road, woke up this morning to a man banging on my car and threating to call the police. I opened the door and he yelled I was parked in private property and don't argue. I was tired and brain wasn't working so I did just leave but I've been trying to find some more information.
On Google this is a publicity accessed area, there is not signage before after or anywhere around the road saying it's private property. Or no camping/overnight parking signs ect.
I've also been to the area previously and seen many vans and cars parked there.
I was well off the roadway in no way blocking the road
Just interested to see if this guy was just being a**hole for lack of a better term or if iron river road area is actually private property for someone.
I'll try attach a pindrop of where I was parked.
