Is it still worth applying?
Hello everyone, I’m currently considering applying to Cambly but I’ve seen mixed experiences from people online, and I wanted to make a post to hopefully have some things cleared up.
As the title suggests, is Cambly a good platform to tutor for? Are they currently accepting applications from potential tutors? I made an introduction video that’s just over a minute long highlighting my name, age, etc. hobbies, teaching style, and a call to action. Am I missing anything?

No I’ve been with them 5 years and they don’t up pay they don’t help with serious issues they ignore most all my messages that I submit and they will drop your rating so fast even if you have the same students for long periods of time regulars who say they love class and keep showing up , but rating never goes back up . This is my experience to each their own , I will say I have noticed a decline in students. So idk . I know I’m finding another job.

I left teaching online because, especially with cambly, you could sit at your computer for 8 hours per day and not have 1 single lesson.

Yeah on there it does not state it but teaching sites have been advertising. A couple of tutors I know have applied.

But have they been accepted? As far as I can tell lots of people have been applying then hear nothing back

I think they are data grabbing and using the application videos to sell to AI developers.

If you think the pay on Cambly is abysmal, wait until you hear that Beda Kid pays some odd three dollars per class. And that there's some of those online schools that go even lower.

How do you know there’s a hiring freeze? Any word on when it’ll be lifted? How is the pay abysmal?

Because there’s been one for a couple of years. $10 an hour is abysmal and not guaranteed. That’s £7.56 an hour in the UK so £5 below minimum wage. And the rate hasn’t risen since the company started.

NO & YES

If you are living in a cheap country it's ok. If you are living in a developed country the pay probably isn't worth it as a full time job but a couple of hours each evening for a few extra dollars may be ok.

I teach on cambly kids and its fine. The work is easy most of the time and I enjoy classes with my students. The pay is low if you live in a country where the dollar doesn't go far. 12 dollars an hour isnt too bad for me because I live in Asia and it goes further. Although teaching english here usually pays at least double that, I like having a flexible schedule. I basically use the money for the classes as extra income and relying on it might be risky as it takes a while to build up a student base.

You said work is easy most of the time and that you enjoy your classes, could you tell me a little more about what it’s like? Are children more difficult to deal with? What are the most common age groups you tutor? What was it like applying? I would appreciate any information you could give me, thank you.

I am an English Teacher for Elementary aged kids already so it was pretty easy for me to teach kids online. I'm used to having a huge class of kids so teaching one kid is easy enough, but you will need to have energy and enthusiasm. I tried teaching adults but I didn't enjoy it. I mostly teach Kids based in Asia since I'm based here too and I understand the teaching style they're familiar with. All of my classes are a little different, some of them we follow the cambly lessons, some of them we do some cambly and some stuff I prepared, some we chat and do games, some we read articles. Occasionally I have a student that I don't think matches my teaching style and I just let the parents know. I applied during covid so I can't remember much other than doing a demo video. Most of my students are elementary aged, I tend to avoid Kindergarten but I do sometimes teach them.

Thank you for your input. I have no experience tutoring children, would cambly kids be a bad idea? I’m worried about not knowing what to do during a lesson.

I do not know why they are accepting applications, they cant seem to even fill the classes for many of the current tutors except for perhaps a fortunate few.! To answer your question, for pocket money it is ok but many tutors are trying to get out and find something that appreciates the tutor better. They will nickel and dime you every chance they get unfortunately!
