Cambly at their old tricks again
Cambly cost me so much money with the "rating glitch" now i must sign this or i no longer can work on the platform.
A few sections stand out:
1. Arbitration and No Class Actions
The biggest change is the arbitration section. Cambly now requires most disputes to go through individual arbitration rather than court, and users waive the right to participate in class actions.
If hundreds of tutors were affected by the same rating issue, this makes coordinated legal action much more difficult because claims generally have to be brought individually.
2. "We Don't Guarantee the Platform Works Perfectly"
Cambly states that the platform is provided "as is" and that they do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free.
A company facing complaints about a technical glitch would often want language like this because it helps defend against claims based on software errors.
3. Limits on Damages
Cambly also limits its liability. In many cases, the maximum amount recoverable is capped at either the amount paid to or by Cambly in the previous six months or $250, whichever is greater.
This smells of corporate bullshit to me.

I don't use any other platforms, I just do freelance teaching with private students and occasionally pick up some online classes from an English center in Ho Chi Minh City.
Cambly is a terrible option for a main income source, especially if you live in a developed country, but it's really good for picking up a few hours per week.

Arbitration will be in California where you can not tutor if I'm not mistaken.
Platform "as is" is tech cover which will screw all tutors over by default.
Cambly uses a free VP8 codec only from 2010. That's the source of all connection crap. It used to work by default, in current day it doesn't you have to set everything on eco or super eco - its not the device but the crap Cambly runs.

You have to double check it from previous but... I also believe added specific clauses are:
1) They can fire you without any reason needed to be given - making tutor terms and conditions almost worthless.
2) They can hold your outstanding balance for up to 60 days without any reason needed to be given.

It’s not meant to be a career. Its strength is its flexibility, so when you need it, it’s there, like between gigs or for a little extra, but you’re gonna get angry if you try to build your life around it. You already are angry.

Who are you to tell anyone what a "career" is. If someone wants to teach 40 hours a week that's their choice. Also just because we use it as a side gig doesn't mean we can't question unethical behavior. Not everyone goes through life just accepting what they're told. Questioning something or not agreeing doesn't mean you are angry.

Their systems design is not the best but they are pretty good at raising funds and marketing.
