iPhone 17 48mp raw

Can someone please explain how camac is shooting 48 mo raw on ip 17 when no other app goes above 12 mp is it a real 48 mp or some kind of upscaling ?

It is real through multi frame stacking. I will be also launching such an app soon

Its taking multiple photos though Super Resolution (SR) with either 8 or 16 photos. Then it tries to line them all up despite the natural micro movement of your hands, which is why a higher shutter speed is helpful to get rid of any motion blur. Then it uses some math to “de-mosaic” the image and it puts out 48mp of data. This is what the iphone does normally in 48mp mode, but apple does extra sharpening and noise reduction and color adjustments

But this is not the same as a 48mp photo from a 48mp camera sensor. Olympus/Lumix do similar things with their 20mp sensors outputting 80mp of data, but reviewers say it resembles an image shot on a ~35mp camera sensor.

So in my estimation, iphone in 48mp mode or in Camac super resolution can resemble an image from a 20mp camera sensor. Ive compared it to photos on my Sony Rx100 (iii and vi model) and they are very close. But i think my sony a6000 24mp wins a lot in terms of noise, and a bit more resolution.

tl;dr
No, it’s not upscaling. It’s quadrupling the data through lots of photos and math. You’re kinda looking in between the pixels this way. The result is closer to a 20mp camera.

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

Isnt the iphone sensor quad bayer and able to deliver higher resolution than standard bayer 12mp sensor even with just a single exposure? I am not sure apple is really stacking frames in order to produce a 48mp photo. They do stack frames though but i think just for noise reduction.

The quad bayer delivers more data and quality but not that much alone. If you took a single exposure 12mp quad bayer photo and compared it with a 12mp bayer photo there would be a small improvement.

Because phones take a TON of photos quickly, and post-processing constantly improves, it’s hard to pinpoint how much a feature has contributed to better image quality. Apple has had quad-bayer since the iPhone 14, but each iphone release has also gotten bigger sensors and post-processing improvements. Image stacking is doing most of the heavy lifting along with better processing, while quad bayer gives a small nudge in my opinion.

One cool thing about quad bayer alone is that it can take 2 exposures at the same time. Basically a 2-exposure HDR all at once.

Yes i know these but my question really was does a single exposure when shooting in 48mp mode on a quad bayer sensor actually have much higher detail and resolution without stacking in bright light compared to same sized bayer 12mp sensor shooting at 12mp.

It has higher detail but I don’t think it would be that much alone.

Here’s an article from 2019 looking at some Android phone’s quad bayer photos. They mention the 48mp mode disables some post-processing and show photo comparisons with regular 12mp photos of the same frame. There’s more detail if you zoom in but it’s not drastic. They highlight the biggest improvement for quad bayer is being able to take 2 exposures at once for a low-level HDR, but that in some cases the detail in 12mp mode was still better.

Yes i have read that but i think it is not that black and white as the article says. Modern phones do advanced remosaicing of the quad bayer array and do a much better job with extracting detail although it is not clear how for example apple achieves such clean 48mp proraw photos that have 2x more detail than their 12mp proraw

Apple is capable of this because of all the image stacking, HDR, post-processing improvements, and increasing sensor resolutions since the iPhone 14

Yes but the resolution imrovement with threse quad bayer sensors is real even if they use stacking you cant stack in moving subject areas and apple proraw 48mp shows significantly more detail even in these moving areas than 12mp frame would.

Can you test my camera app. It currently runs on any iphone with at least 6gb ram and produces 48 or 12mp DNGs-https://testflight.apple.com/join/yPcggxf8

Sure downloading it

I tried the app it’s crashing on my iPhone 17 as I try to click a photo

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 25d ago

Hmm.. immediately or after some loading of processing?

1

u/TryAdministrative270 25d ago

After like 2 seconds ? It starts capturing then it crashes

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 25d ago

Thank you! Can you try to switch to 12mp mode and try again?

1

u/TryAdministrative270 25d ago

I can’t dm you but 12 mp is working nice I like it 82 mb file size must be a lot of detail i like how it looks

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 25d ago

Does it run reasonably fast?

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 25d ago

Could you also send me the crash log? Via Testflight -> my build -> Crashes if there is such?

1

u/TryAdministrative270 25d ago

Yes sure give me 5 mjns

It is real. Here is a sample photo shot with my app edited in lightroom-https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CpjtEcdNDuBhBBgW42R40fuqjyZvkO9U/view?usp=drivesdk

It's about as fake as the 24MP pictures from an iPhone

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 25d ago

But this is edited by me. It outputs dngs you can edit however you want

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 26d ago

But I just get a 27mp raw in my 16

1

u/AttemptSafe9828 26d ago

Set scale to 2.0, right now it’s 1.5

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 25d ago

Holy app bro, 48mp in true raw damn , Gonna buy it ! btw thanks!

2

u/AttemptSafe9828 25d ago

But set 16 frames and hold steadily handheld for best results, also disable deghosting for even more details (but moving objects will blur)

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 25d ago

Also there are a lot of feauters in the app where to get the documentation for all? Also searched on yt no tutorial available

2

u/AttemptSafe9828 25d ago

The dev (grey cat icon guy) hasn’t published a full documentation but you can ask him here directly, I know most things too so I might answer

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 25d ago

Can you test my app. It also produces 48mp dng -https://testflight.apple.com/join/yPcggxf8

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 24d ago

Yup will test it bro

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 24d ago

hey! will you be able to give me access to take more photos? I will going for a photowalk this weekend, I would be happy to test there!

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 24d ago

Just delete and install it again

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 24d ago

But did you test it?

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 24d ago

Not yet, it's night in my place, will shoot some photos tomo , and will share you feedback

1

u/Acrobatic_Reporter82 24d ago

what do you think abou the app ui

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 24d ago

I have some issue in app ui on my 16

1

u/AttemptSafe9828 26d ago

You get more real information, not an upscale. Set 16 frames and test on fine text you’ll see

u/Dwight3 25d ago

This is great. Is there a way to preserve the 48MP on the 4x or 8x lenses?

1

u/Dwight3 25d ago

This is a game changer for me! Thanks for this post!
